SEPARATION Chapter 94 " For a moment the sense of his remark did not come to me. "I vould not have any ot them around shallow, time-wasting, moneyspending people. Aunt Harriet would never allow it." "Quite rieht " Win answered. "Aunt

Harriet's crowd is one rung further up the social ladder. You used to say you hated that sort of thing. You used to say the whole social system sickened you. You seem to go in for it how harder than I ever did. "My crowd is not quite as smart as your aunt's. I'll admit. But it is much more fun, j can assure you. A little free and easy, perhaps, but much more natural and human than her set. Gwen

iays she's glad 6he has been man- j oeuvred into this lot, she likes it so much better." It only needed Gwendolyn's name to finish me. But instead of making me angry, it suddenly changed my whole mood. "You're quite right, Win," I said, and bo took away every weapon he possessed. He could no longer argue with me when I agreed with him! It was the cleverest thing I ever did but it was unpremeditated cleverness. "You're quite right, I am a social snob. But 1 hate it. Win, please, let's forget all of it. Let's really start fresh again. I don't want to see anyone I ever knew before. Please let's. We don't have to move away. I don't mean that But you don't like my friends, so I'll give them up." "Colin?" I hesitated a long time. I never thought of having to give up Colin.

He had always been my best and truest friend. It would be the supreme

sacrifice. But if Win asked it "If you want," I said.

"Then you would be foolish," Win paid curtly and sensibly.- "I don't want you to give up your friends. I don't

like them because they don't like me

They never have. I've found others

that I prefer. I don't even ask you to accept these. You needn't know them.

r xcept that you'll have to be decent to

ihem when I bring them around, of

course, and you 11 nave to go aoout with them a little bit with me, just for appearances. "But we can each keep our freedom. ; You have your circle and I'll have

mine. I'll be just as nice to youri

friends when they come here as pos

sible. It will be quite easy, I prob- i

ably shan't see much of them." "But Win you were always going out, every night, all the time, and we lan into debt." Win hesitated. "Well, I'm in debt now. It costs to run about. But I like it, and I'll get Mother to send me some money soon. I'll go home and see her that will please her." "But your own income from the , business " i "I know. But somehow I always manage to spend more than I make. I I have been working hard. I like Jiv- ' ing hard hard work and hard play. ; When I'm at the office, I want to be ; on the go, I want to have things hap- , pen. What's the use of making money '. if one can't spend it?" It sounded hopelessly like the old days.

' "You don't seem very cheerful over the prospect of rejoining your hus- ' band," Win observed, reaching over: the table for a pipe and beginning to: fill It. i

"You don't make the prospect cheerful," I answered dolefully. I began to ; smooth out my gloves nervously. "You propose 1 come back to you and then j suggest we live lives that are prac- : , tically separate." "What do you propose then?" Win lit the pipe with a match and threw It among the other black matches that ' littered the fireplace. : "I don't propose anything. I've al- : ways wanted a little home, and nice

, friends, sincere people that I could j ; like and trust, and well, books and; : concerts and lots of things like that, j ' of course, but not so much. I likej i what they call home life, I suppose."

How dull you make it sound." I sat up for a moment. Then I got up. "It's no use, Win. We are still at opposite ends of the pole. You

want the sort of thing I can't stand,! and I want something that bores you ! to death. Goodbye. I'm sorry I came, : for you had another engagement this j ' evening." I

"A man to talk business. I'm glad to be out of it. Don't go. After all, we might try it. Connie, I do love

I like these people. You needn't ever

see them.

I let my hand rest in his, looking up into his face. Into his clear gray eyes,

trying to look back behind them into the warm soul that used to be Win's. I wondered where that warm, lovely personality had gone. "We would be just where we were a year ago. It would be another separation and more talk. If you feel a little more like looking at things my way " I turned, calmly enough, and walked down the corridor to the door. I dared not look back for Win. I opened the door and went out. Tomorrow "Dejection."

Beauty Chats By Edna Kent Forbes

A little while ago we were talking

of exercise and massage as a means of strengthening the muscles of the

face, and therefore of keeping the

face young. I recommended rubbing the skin with cream to act as a lubricant and then rubbing the face

vigorously with palm of the hand.

With the cream on the skin this

massage is so easily done that the muscles are in no sense pulled or

strained, while there is sufficient fric

tion to bring the blood up to the face and to rejuvenate the skin. There are a few other exercises which you quite literally do with your face. One of them is to qucker up the lips as though you were blowing out a distant candle. Blow hard, take a deep breath of air and repeat, and repeat again 25 or 30 times. This tends to fill out hollow cheeks, it strengthens the muscles around the mouth, avoiding those ugly wrinkles that run from the nose to the chin - and, incidentally, it is the only exercise I know of that will improve the shape of the lips. Of course if you have wrinkles, hoi-

there is no reason to suppose this condition indicates any internal disorders. It is probably an attraction that is as natural to you, as dimples are to others.

Show him how little pleasure you get from playing. If he plays or if Mother does ask him to make this test: Block up the pedals of the piano with books, so they cannot be used. Then let him try to play. What a monotonous strumming! Might almost as well beat on a wooden block. Probably he will quickly stop in disgust.

But that is the way you must play. For you cannot reach the pedals. You cannot give expression to the music Always the Same Over and over, you must play finger exercises. Of course, that is a fine thing. It is very necessary. Only in that way can you ever learn to play well.

Sometimes, though, you would like a change. You would take more interest with a few pretty pieces. Pieces that bring out delicate shades of tone or demand the full power of the piano. You would like to play the way grown-ups do. Play Like an Artist And now you can! You can play like a real artist -on the beautiful Lyon & Healy Piano,

But Daddy can trade it in, at a very moderate cost, on a Lyon & Healy Piano, whose exquisite voice "sings beneath the fingers." Then you will be able to use the pedals. You will have a piano of supreme quality that you all can enjoy. Come and Try It ' Tell Daddy to ask us what the greatest pianists say about the Junior Pedal. Have him or Mother bring you to our store to try it. We'd like to have you play one of these beautiful pianos. If they can't come, have them phone or write for our free illustrated folder.
