PRINCIPAL EXPLAINS GRADING SYSTEM USED IN LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL The following explanation of the grading system used in the Richmond high school was made by Principal E. C. Cline, Thursday: 1. "We use in grading, the letters A, B. C. D, F. These letters do not represent numerical marks and should not be calculated, explained or inter
preted in that way. They represent the quantity and quality of one pupil"s achievement as compared with what the other pupils in" the same class or kind of work are doing. Each pupil is ranked with his fellows. 2. "The grades given are not primarily measures of natural ability. It does not require years of schooling to determine one's natural ability. That can be discovered in a few moments by an intelligence test. The business of the schools is to educate and the modern conception of education is growth resulting from the pupils' activity, interest, and effort. They will not necessarily correspond with native ability, but will indicate how profitably native ability has been employed. Growth is measured by what one does, not by what one has. The intellectually gifted pupil who has only
tried to "get by" and has formed habits of loafing has not grown. He has by his school experience decreased not increased his chance of success. To the less gifted pupil who utilises to the limit his ability and opportunities, the result is invaluable. Our system of marking aims to inculcate this attitude towards school work and to measure the results accordingly. Specific Statements. 3. "The statements of the above paragraphs should be read into the following specific statements concerning the meaning of the marks. 4. "Grade C For every test or examination and for every grade period we group the pupils who have made the average amount of growth as compared with the growth the class as a whole or of several classes of same subject; to these pupils we give "C". 5. "Grades B and D These marks are given to those pupils who have so employed their talents and opportunities as to merit respectively more or less than the average; "B" sounds the note of encouragement; "D" of warning. 6. "Grade A This mark of special honor is given to those pupils who by superior use of native capacity or class opportunities stand out unmistakably as leaders in the class. 7. "Grade F This mark of failure goes to those pupils who have so grossly misused their native ability or class opportunities that no worthwhile growth has come from the class work o rthat they are unable to do the work of the next grade. If given to pupils who have done their utmost it is an indication that that line of work is entirely unsuited to their natural ability. 8. "There are no clearly drawn lines of demarkation between B and C and between C and D; A and F, however, stand out sharply from the other marks. . ... What Statistics Show. p. "Statistics show that in the long run about 40 of the pupils will do average work, 20 will do B work, and 20 D work. About 10 per cent will be outstanding leaders, and about an equal number, failures. 10. "A deferred grade (Def.) is
PRINCESS IN U. S. ON A VISIT LIKES CIGARETS, DANCING
1 VHH)N9e rl
Community Service Music Memory Contest A contest inaugurated by Richmond Community Service In recognising 24 melodies by listening to them.
Princess Benriette Sava-Goiu. Princess' Henrietta Sava-Goiu, who has just arrived in the U. S. from Roumania. likes to smoke, is "crazy" about dancing, and believes in the transmigration of souls. She ia a poetess of note, vritine under the name of Adrio Val, and her best pal is the queen of Kourr.snia, for whose approaching visit to America the princess has come to prepare the way.
Selection No. 5 Review of the first four selections: As an aid to the memory of the material already included in our list, it is helpful to examine and compare these four numbers. , Two have been vocal (From the Land of the Sky Blue Water, and The
Sextet), one instrumental (The Minuet), and one a combination of vocal and instrumental (Aida March). Two have been from operas, and both of these were by Italian composers. Two have been separate compositions, the one by a German, and the other by an American composer. One is a song, one a vocal group or ensemble, one a violin solo, one a large composition for orchestra, band and Aorus. Three of them are in the triple rhythm of the waltz or the minuet;
that is, there is a strong accent followed by two weaker ones. One is a double or march rhythm.
Two of them are simple and folk like; two are complex and highly involved. Nevertheless all of them have such singable melodies that thev can
j be easily hummed or whistled.
To aid In doing this the following list of the scale names for the principle themes will be helpful, even though the length of the notes is not indicated. From the Land of the Sky Blue
Waters: ray ray sol me me eoi me ray. ray doh. Minuet in G: me fan sol fe sol fe sol fe sol, lah me fah sol ray me. Triumphal March from Aida: sol doh ray sol ray me me me me, fah doh me ray doh. Sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor:

given when the grade is withheld until certain work is made up or other preliminary condition fulfilled. 11. "We do not give any such marks as A plus or A minus. 12. Grades are given out three
times each semester at approximately six week intervals. The final semester
grade is not an average of the previous
grades, but a mark indicating the growth or accomplishment for the
semester as a whole.

Movie Actresses and their Hair
Did it ever occur to you that every movie actress you have seen has lovely hair, while the most popular count their curls as the chief beauty? In
j fact, many are leading ladies just beI cause of their attractive looks. Inquiry among them discloses the fact j that they bring out all the natural I beauty of their hair by careful sham- ! pooing, not with any soap or make
shift, but with a simple mixture by putting a teaspoonful of canthrox (which they get from the druggist) in a cup of hot water and applying this instead of soap. This full cup of shampoo liquid is enough so it Is easy to apply it to all the hair instead of just the top of the head. After its use, the hair dries rapidly with uniform color. Dandruff, excess oil and dirt are dissolved and entirely disappear. The hair is so fluffy that it looks much heavier than It is; its lustre and softness are delightful. Advertisement.
