PRESENT HOUR GIVES YOUTH ITS CHANGE, SAYS INDIANA WOMAN
By Associated Press) PROVIDENCE. R. I., Oct. 24. The present hour presents to the young people of America an opportunity of unusual significance of significance, first, to their own lives, in its opportunity for self-development and selfexpression; second, in relation to community, national and world problems, Mrs. Daniel Stecker, of Gary, Ind., told the Woman's Home Missionary society of the Methodist Episcopal church here today. "The first demand is for fuller knowledge and clear thinking in order to understand the present world conditions and their own relations to them," Mrs. Stecker said. "The sec
ond is for resolute decision, implying
recognition and assumption of obligation for answering the call for world service world service, because the day of "hermit" nations is past, and because for good or ill, the United
States his been thrust into economic,
social, moral and religious leadership. "The third demand is for unselfish
devotion the losing of selfish interests and purposes in the larger life of
the community, nation and world. The world-citizen may reside anywhere in a New England village, a rural community, a western plain, the slums of the city or its finest street He may work in field, or factory, or office, or store, or school this does not matter. It is his mental and spiritual contact that make him a world-citizen. "The field of his world-service may lie just in front of his open door. This is true for most of us. INGROWN TOE NAIL
TURNS OUT ITSELF
A noted authority says that a few
drops of "Outgro" upon the skin surrounding the ingrowing nail reduces
inflammation and pain and so tough

penetrate the flesh, and the nail turns naturally outward almost over night. "Outgro" is a harmless, antiseptic manufactured for chiropodists. How

Pearls Originally Thought
To Be Frozen Dew Drops The earliest theory of the produc
tion of pearls was that they were congealed aew-drops. Another notion was
that pearls were eggs of oysters. The Chinese solved the problem and found that pearls are due to the irritation produced by the introduction of a foreign matter, such as a grain of sand, into the shell of the oyster. This bit of matter is coated by the oyster with nacre like that With which tha shell ia

ine Chinese and Japanese, carry, on the artificial production of pearls to a considerable extent. The shells of the bivalve are separated gently and a small bit of mud or a tiny piece of lead is inserted under the flesh to serve as a nucleus for the pearl. The shell then closes and the oyster is placed carefully in a stream of water and fed on manure. After an interval of four years the shells are opened and the nuclei, coated with nacre, are removed. Pearls produced in this way are genuine and wholly natural. The process is started artificially, but is carried on by the oyster in a strictly normal and natural manner.
