At ono time during the war, 118,000 government employes were located in Washington. Before the war the normal number of government workers in Washington was about 40,000. But it is genally admitted, the government cannot reduce that figure at this time without crippling the service. In fact, many believe that the government is now at its Washington payroll minimum. The reductions since the war ended have gradual. On Armistic day, Nov. 11, 1918, the government force in Washington, as officially recorded, was 117,760. It arose a little, to about 118,000, before the reductions began. In thei

Washington were reduced from 102,000 to 86,450 on Dec. 31, 1920. During the current year small reductions have been made each month, until on Aug. 1 there were 78,151 on the payroll. Since that time there has been a very large reduction of

employes in the census bureau because that bu

reau has virtually completed all the details con

nected with the taking of last year's census. Probably there are no more than 75,000 on the

payroll at the present time. What reductions, if any, will result from the operation of the budget system and the proposed

departmental reorganization plan is problemat

ical at this time. Despite every effort at economy, its is now realized by most members of congress, as well as by department officials, that unless the government goes out of business in certain lines it cannot cut down its force far below its present strength with any degree of safety. Many believe that the only way to make a large economy in the government payroll is to scrap entire bureaus ; and, it is has been said, there are quite a few of these bureaus which could be dispensed with and never missed.

Get some clean, common whiting powdered, and plenty of it put it in a damp place for a day or so, but on no account let it get wet; rub it into the fur with the hand, and don't be afraid to rub it. Let the whitine

stay in till next day, give the fur an-

otner good rubbing, then shake out all the whitinar you can, and give it a pood brushing with a clothes brush. It will now be pretty clean except the s-kin at the bottom of the furs. To remove the dirt from this put the fur over the back of a chair, and use the point of the clothes brush very briskly, at the same time giving a short puff of wind every time you give a stroke with the brush. With a little practice you will remove every trace of whit'nsr, grease or dirt. Lastly, pour alcohol on a plate, dip the point of the n.ish in this, and lightly pass it over 'he fur: move the brush the same way p the fur runs. Q. Is it true that giants obtain their

SAGE TEA TURNS

GRAY HAIR DARK It's Grandmother's Recipe to Bring Back Color and Lustre to Hair. That beautiful, even shade of dark, glossy hair can only be had by brewing a mixture of Sage Tea and Sulphur. Your hair is your charm. It

mases or mars the face. When it fades, turns gray or streaked, just an application or two of Sage and Sulphur enhances its appearance a hundredfold. Don't bother to prepare the mixture; you can get this famous old recine im

proved by the addition of other ingredients at a small cost, all ready for use. It is called Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound. This can always be depended upon to bring back the natural color and lustre of your hair. Everybody uses "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound now because it darkens so naturally and evenly that nobody can tell it has been applied. You simply dampen a sponge or soft brush with it and draw this through the hair, taking one small strand at a

time; by morning the gray hair has disappeared, and after another application it becomes beautifully dark and appears glossy and lustrous. Advertisement

PLEASANT READING Seated by my flaring candle, I digest the daily news, and it treats of crime and scandal, and of dope and smuggled booze. Foolishly I keep inquiring, "Is the whole world staring mad? Aren't people ever tiring of the grewsome

me casement, comes and hits me in the neck. All the boys are busy gunning, and they care not who they plug, and the cops are tired of running grisly slayers to the Jug. With my humble rushlight burning I peruse the tales of crime, longing for the swift

returning of the olden, peaceful time; f

wuen in saiety one might travel up the highway, far and near, and no shotgun, charged with gravel, with his jaunt would interfere. Motor bandits were unheard of in those days serene and bright; it was seldom we had word of gunmen who would shoot at sight In the streets, where men assemble, I'm the victim of a scare, and at home I sweat and tremble lest the
