COMPARATIVE PRICES OF HOGS, CORN, CATTLE ARE SHOWN IN ANALYSIS OF WEEK'S MARKETS
Br WIIXIAM R. SAXDORS 1 What corn is worth at western interior points depends on the freight cost per bushel to the nearest large market For example, corn was quoted on track at Kansas City at 37 1-2 for No. 2 old on Saturday; at 36 1-2 at Omaha; at 45 at Peoria; at 44 1-2 at St Louis; at 45 1-2 at Milwaukee and at 46 at Chicago. There is a difference of 10c per bushel between
the cash price of No. 2 corn at Omaha
and at Chicago. The difference is of ten greater, between both Omaha, Kan sas City and Chicago.
Now a whole lot of corn is grown
within sight of the church spires of Chicago, also close in and around all the other cities named. Other shipping points to each of these markeU tire strung out over hundreds of miles. But no matter how long the haul the
grain competes in these cities with all other grain of the kind and grade. Here is vhere high freight costs are a real handicap to growers. Here Is an important fact that no amount of co-operation can overcome. The cost of getting any and all grain to central points of distribution can not be overcome, although pooling and "feeding" the market and co-operative handling where economies are practiced, should help in various ways. The Natural Feeding Grounds
Where the corn crops are the largest
is the natural feeding centers for hogs. To feed is the most profitable way to market corn and thousands of farmers never ship a bushel of it.
tion charges. The hiaher nrice was
also partly due to the fact that the j
dressed meats could be laid down atj the seaboard, either for home consumption or export at less freight expense than from points farther west. First Range Cattle In Now the cattle shippers are to have competition of Canadian range cattle, at Chicago. The first arrivals got into the Chicago yards on Saturday. They sold at 5.85 to $6.50 for steers, and at $4.40 to $4.75 for cows. How large Canadian shipments will turn out to be is yet a matter of guesswork, but considerable numbers are expected. Best yearling steer3 sold at $12.25 at Chicago last week, and brought $12.15 last Saturday. Hog3 averaged $7.90 on the entire week's receipts, a
gain of 25 cents over the preceding week. The week's cattle receipts

Politeness is the central idea about which the C. H. f. C, an organization of school Children, is formed. Miss Stella Harmon, domestic science su

It wa3 first organized with the purpose of promoting courtesy among the children and Miss Cora Nolder, the teacher of the room in which it is functioning, says it is doing effective work. Mem

"A grain man after making a tour of northwestern Iowa says they are paying 27c for old and 22c for new No. 4 yellow corn. proportions. But the farther the stock
yards from the great manufacturing and consuming centers, the lower the prices of stock on foot The freight charges to points of consumption on dressed meats is figured in, according to the percentage of the carcass to be freighted. Taking the figures on a recent, date for comparison, we find, for example, that the top on hog3 at the St. Paul yards was $8.15, with the bulk of sales going at $6.90 to $S. St. Paul was one of the lowest market3 on the hog
map that day. On, the same date St. Joseph.. Mo., made a top of $8.20, with the bulk of sales between $6.85 and $8.15. Omaha with a top of $8.40 had a bottom of $6.50, and the bulk of sales ranged under $7.75. Kansas City, a long way rast of Omaha, made a top of $8.40 and its bulk of sales ran between $7.25 and $8.25, with the bulk of sales at Sioux City, Iowa, trailing along at $6.50 to $7.50. Chicago and Indianapolis Coming farther east for our figures, we find that Chicago hogs made a top
of $8.90. with bulk of sales ranging at 57.40 to $8.80. white Indianapolis, still farther east and also in the heart of a good hog country, had a range of $8.70 for top and $8.60 to $8.65 for bulk of sales. There were 13,000 hogs In th Indianapolis pens that morning, this accounting for the lower top, compared with Chicago, the reverse being ordinarily true. On the same date Cleveland sold hogs up to $9.25; Cincinnati, $9.25; Pittsburgh, $9.50 and East Buffalo. $9.60. The nearer, then, that our hogs arrived to points of greatest consumption, and the farthest from quantity production, the higher the cost of the hogs. That additional cost was partly represented, of course, in transporta-
coal and the farmer works for prac
tically nothing.
