WASHINGTON STOCK i SHOWS EVEN BALANCE ! IN 'WAY DOWN EAST'

1 BY MARVIN. More and more one becomes convinced of the even balance ot the company presenting stock performances at the Washington theatre. This week

they appear in "Way Down East," and they are found cast for parts well suited to the individual characters. Unlike other of the play In which they have been seen here, "Way Down Kast," offers less comedy possibilities, and more of the heavy melodrama variety. What comedy the vehicle rrovldes is well taken care of by Hi Holler (Oorge Robbins) and Rube Whipple (Jack Emerson). It is well that mention is made of the comedy bits first, for without them, the striking somber tone of the piece would bo almost unbearable. With them, as those acquainted with the play well know, "Way Down East" is made into a living mass of more than tangled threads of life. In the acting of David Bartlett (Herbert Duffy) as one of the principals, one is made to feel that the character feels and thinks more than 1 e says. He appears capable of wrecking the whole order of things by his power, but at the tame time holding it in check for possible need. But one opportunity is given for the physical exhibition of this element, but several times the character's lines indicate the moral force. Anna Moore (Lucille Husting), the fubject about which the wheel of action turns, is quite winning as the tweet voiced and dependent young girl,

the victim or an injustice. Collins Distinctive. Iennox Sanderson (Jay Collins) makes an admirable vlllian. He is smooth and commanding. His is a distinctive piece of work. Amasa Bartlett (Arthur Oltol) probably is more vividly silhouetted tigainst the background of the production than any other individual. Local

The Theatres

MURRAY Scott Turner, known to gamblers nil over the country as the "Cherokee Kid," directed the staging of the big gambling scenes In Pauline Frederick's new Goldwyn picture, "Road3 cf Destiny," now playing at the Murray theatre. Turner is the son of Gen. G. P. M. Turner, noted old southern orator and

editorial writer. He himself owned the Memphis Scimitar for a number of years. He has operated gambling houses In Alaska, New York and in the goldfields of Nevada, and was in Leadville and Cripple Creek during the gold rush days when gambling was at its height. He is now a Los Angeles business man. To make the picture absolutely correct Mr. Turner was asked to instruct Pauline Frederick in the art of dealing for roulette. In her picture she appears as a dealer in a big Alaskan gambling house. The difference between paying for a roulette wheel and

for a Faro bank is not an easy thing

to learn, but Pauline Frederick at last -learned this difficult art. MURRETTE. Pearl White, the Fox star, is just as versatile oft the studio floor a3 on it. For instance, here are a few of the parts she plays outside of studio hours: Idol of about 'steen little admirers who live near the big Fox studio on West Fifty-fifth street. New York; patroness, hostess and guardian to 'steen more youngsters at and near ; her farm on Long Island; arbitrator of quarrels that arise among the adoring kiddies of the neighborhood. She also

Pagan of the Hills," will be seen at the Murrette theatre beginning today. RICHMOND "The End of the Road" which is being shown at the Richmond Theatre, is a remarkable film.. It is the sort of a picture that may be all things to all people. In the first place it i3 a startling discourse setting forth the evils that are bound to attend loose living. Secondly, it may stand on its merits as a pretty nearly perfect motion-picture

production. It is ideally mounted, the photography is flawless, the continuity

sustained as never before in a screen drama of its kind, while the cast is

superbly adequate, registering the

business of the story In a way that bears out the reputation of the artists

grouped in its cast. The story is woven around the career of two beautiful American girls. One brought up by a wise

mother is brought up with a knowledge

of the mystery of birth and the world s pit-falls, while the other Is reared in ignorance that later makes her easy prey. The leads are taken by Richard Bennett, famous 'star' of "Damaged Goods" and Claire Adams, one of the most beautiful girls in filmdom. Performances are continuous, no children under 16 years being admitted unless accompanied by parent. VETERAN'S FREEDOM SOUGHT INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Oct. 12.
