The American Legion Meeting The state convention of the American Legion at Wabash emphasizes the purpose of the organizationthe inculcation of patriotism and loyalty. Here is a group of men that is devoting its entire time to a lofty purpose. It serves no material interests and seeks no selfish gain. "We must Americanize our own citizens by breaking down the barriers of ignorance and by opening up the highway of knowledge," said Frank McHale, chairman of the Americanization committee, in his report. He truly summarizes the only way by which all the people of the nation can truly become citizens of the realm. So long as ignorance of the basis of our government and prejudica against our institutions sway the lives of some of our citizens, we lack that unanimity of national purpose which makes us powerful within and respected from without. National life will not be virile and powerful if a minority of our citizens does not believe that our government exists solely for the benefit of the people and is admin

istered fox their welfare. This saving knowledge can come only by educatioiiand the legion is one of the most potent agencies in the country to bring it about. Every true patriot will also subscribe to the following sentiment of Mr. McHale: "If we are to retain our dignity as a state and keep our nationality intact, then we must combat those various enemies by a state and national legislation program to the end that our laws speak for America and for Americans only. The people are looking to us to champion this cause. The legion must and shall carry on this work for its life is one devoted to patriotism." All of us know that mere orations on the duty of citizenship will not produce loyalty. Words must be translated into deeds, as Mr. McHale
points out. Vigorous opposition to all forms of
disloyalty is a paramount consideration, and the legion, comprising as it does the men who fought for the nation, is admirably equipped to lead in this work. "Its life is one devoted to patriotism." Citizenship is only an empty title if the man who claims that privilege does not assume it3 responsibilities, chief of which is an unwavering devotion to our institutions and loyalty to the government under whose benign sway our national life has evolved. A legion post is the center of loyalty in every community from which radiate patriotic impulses that powerfully affect every member. The positive and aggressive Americanization program of the legion deserves to be commended heartily. It is accomplishing a great service in behalf of our national destiny.
TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can", "Take It", "Up RECONSTRUCTION Reconstruction is a very big word full of meaning. To reconstruct is really to begin all over again and make something new out of that which has been destroyed or worn away. We hear this appeal on every hand, reconstruction of finance, of government, of industries, and of almost every phase of activity. But the greatest and most important reconsruction process must be of men and women. Get a man to think right and he will work and produce right. I watched a workman the other day. Only about five minutes more and his job of many days would be finished. But it was 5 o'clock so the tools all dropped and the unfinished work remained. When he took up his work in the morning, I noted that it took this same workman about half an hour to get his tools and materials ready to complete the task he had left the night before. What is needed in this workaday world is that every man, woman and child shall take PRIDE in the thing they do and that they do it as well as it can be done. On every hand I hear employers complaining of the fact that they cannot get GOOD workmen those who do not have, to be watched. This seems to be a universal condition with millions out of work as well! Reconstruct men and women, and the world will take care of itself. Reconstruct your heart, and your thinking and your acts will stand out like the lonely peaks of towering mountains secure above storms and stress. A man must feel right in his Throne Room if he would invite the outside passerby to pause about his doorstep. . And after all, isn't it worth while to feel that no one need follow you to patch up that which you have neglected or done in an inefficient style?

The silk merchant's face paled. After a moment of tnought he looked up at the banker and said: "Were you ever in the silk business?" "Why, of course not,' 'answered the banker. Memories of Old Days In This Paper Ten Years Ago Today The fifteenth annual exhibit of the Art association was opened at the public art galleries in the high school building with a reception to the ticketholders and patrons, and the members of the reception committee. The high school orchestra gave a program of popular music under the direction of Mr. Earhart. Punch was served throughout the evening by Miss Martha Whitacre and a coterie of high school girls. The exhibition was made up of 71 pictures in oil and water color, and 13 prints, making 84 numbers in all and were hung in the two galleries entered from the foyer. The third gallery was devoted to the permanent collection of the Art association and included the picture presented by the Gaar family to the organization painted by Hilliard, a former resident artist. Rippling Rhymes By Walt Mason THE POORHOUSE WAY The price of things is higher than it should rightly be, and oft we hear the buyer exclaiming, "Hully chee!" They say that hides are cheaper so cheap the growers lose; but oh, the weary weeper who buys a pair of shoes! We cannot scrape together the coin to buy a pair of shoes of honest leather, such as we used to wear; and so in shoes of paper, for which we roundly pay, all drearily we caper along the poorhouse way. Oh, why are things of leather still priced to break the heart, when hide of steer and wether are cheap, in every mart? And cotton has been selling o ruinously low wa heard the growers yelling and wailing in their woe. But goods composed ot cotton, the things we had to buv. as you had not forgotten, were always Deastly high. Conditions are not cheering, to one who's spent his wad; the hogs are profiteering, the swine are still abroad. Silk shirts, of blazing splendors, are lower than of yore, but when I'd buy suspenders, they're dearer than before. Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets the substitute for calomel are a mild but sure laxative, and their effect on the liver is almost instantaneous. These little olive-colored tablets are the result of Dr. Edwards' determination not to treat liver and bowel complaints with calomel. The pleasant little tablets do the good that calomel does, but have no bad after effects. They don't injure the teeth like strong liquids or calomel. They take hold of the trouble and quickly correct it. Why cure the liver at the expense of the teeth? Calomel sometimes plays havoc with the gums. So do strong liquids. It is best riot to take calomel. Let Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets take its place. Headaches, "dullness" and that lazy feeling come from constipation and a disordered liver. Take Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets when you feel "logy" and "heavy". They "clear" clouded brain and "perk up" the spirits. 15c and 30c Advertisement. The Reigate Puzzle By SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE Copyright, 1821, by Harper & Bros. Published by special arrangement with The McClure Newspaper Syndicate.
PART TWO ! The story so far: Sherlock Holmes, who has been ill, goes Into the country with Dr. Watson to rest and Tisit Colonel Hayters, who lives near Reigate. The Colonel tells them that a neighbor, old Acton, has recently been robbed. The next morning they Lear that at the house of another neighbor, Mr. Cunningham, William, the coachman, was shot and killed. Old Acton had some claim on Cunningham's estate and they'd been at law about it for years. The local man, Inspector Forrester, arrives to ask help on the case from Sherlock Holmes. He gives them the facts in the case. Mr. Cunningham and his son. Alec Cunningham, at a quarter to twelve, at night, heard William calling for help. Mr. Cunningham looked from his bedroom window and Mr. Alec ran downstairs. They saw two men wrestling, heard a shot, saw William fall dead and saw the other man run across the garden and over the hedge. In the hands of the dead man Forrester found a scrap of paper. Apparently the rest of the sheet had been torn from his grasp by the murderer. The scrap read: "If we can find the rest of the paper, we've found the murderer." said Holmes. He met Mr. Cunningham and Mr. Alec. The Inspector was about to tell them of the scrap of paper when Mr. Holmes had a severe nervous attack. He quickly recovered and went to look at the rooms of Mr. Cunningham and his son. He suggested offering a reward and showed one he had written, describing the crime as occurring at a quarter to one instead of a quarter to twelve. Old Mr. Cunningham corrected the mistake, however. Suddenly he disappeared from the father's room. Father and son rushed after him. He called for help and the Inspector and Mr. Hayters rushed to his rescue. Both Cunninghams were attacking him. They were pulled off and Holmes asked Forrester to arrest them for the murder. Holmes triumphantly displayed the remainder of the sheet of paper. Today's Instalment We found Holmes pacing up and down in the field, his chin sunk upon his breast, and his hands thrust into his trousers pockets. "The matter grows in interest," said j he. "Watson, your country trip has been a distinct succes. I have had a charming morning." "You have been up to the scene of the crime, I understand," said the Colonel. "Yes; the Inspector and have made quite a little reconnoissance together." "Any success?" "Well, we have seen some very interesting things. I'll tell you what we did as we walk. First of all, we saw the body of this unfortunate man. He certainly died from a revolver wound as reported." "Had you doubted it, then? "Oh, it is as well to test everything. Our inspection was not wasted. We then had an Interview with Mr. Cunningham and his son, who were able to point out the exact spot where the murderer bad broken through the garden-hedge in his flight That was of great interest." "Naturally" "Then we had a look at this poor fellow's mother. We could get no information from her, however, as she Is very old and feeble." "And what is the result of your investigation ?" "The conviction that the crime is a very peculiar one. Perhaps our visit now may do something to make It less obscure. I think that we are both agreed, Inspector, that the fragment of paper in the dead man's hand, bearirg, as it does, the very hour of his death written upon it, is of extreme importance." "It should give a clue. Mr. Holmes." "It does give a clue. Whoever wrote that note was the man who brought William Kirwan out of his bed at that hour. But where is the rest of that sheet of paper?" "I examined the ground carefully in the hope of finding it," said the Inspector. "It was torn out of the dead man's hand. Why was some one so anxious to get possession of it? Because it incriminated him. And what would he do with it? Thrust it into his pocket, most likely, never noticing that a corner of It had been left in the grip of tne corpse, if we could get the rest of that sheet it Is obvious that we 6hould have gone a long ways toward solving the mystery." "Yes, but how can we get at the criminal's pocket before we catch the criminal?" "Well, well, it was worth thinking over. Then there is another obvious point. The note was sent to William. The man who wrote it could not have taken it; otherwise, of course, he might have delivered his own message by word of mouth. Who brought the note then? Or did it come throueh the post?" I "I have made inquiries," said the Inspector. "William received a letter by the afternoon post yesterday. The envelope was destroyed by him." "Excellent!" cried Holmes, clapping the Inspector on the back. "You've seen the postman. It is a pleasure to work with you. Well, here Is the lodge, and if you will come up. Colonel, I will show you the scene of the crime." We passed the pretty cottage where the murdered man had lived, and walked up an oak-lined avenue to the fine old Queen Anne house, which bears the date of Malplaquet upon the lintel of the door. Holmes and the Inspector led us round it until we came to the side gate, which is separated by a stretch of garden from the hedge which lines the road. A constable was standing at the kitchen door. "Throw the door open, officer," said Holmes. "Now, it was on those stairs that young Cunningham stood and saw the two men struggling just where we are. My poor friend's face had suddenly assumed the most dreadful expression. His eyes rolled upwards, his features writhed In agony, and with a suppressed groan he dropped on his face upon the ground. Horrified at the suddenness and severity of the attack, we carried him into the kitchen, where he lay back in a large chair, and breathed heavily for some minutes. Finally, with a shamefaced apology for his weakness, he rose once more. "Watson would tell you that I have only just recovered from a severe illness," he explained.
