IMPROVEMENTS AT MUNICIPAL LIGHT PLANT WILL DOUBLE CAPACITY OF INSTITUTION

Examination of the city light plant of today, as compared with the city light plant of one year ago, shows differences so great as to make it almost a different institution. Chief among these differences is the instal lation of the new 5,000 kilowatt steam turbine generator, which will practically double the capacity of the plant. The new machine will be placed in the north end of the building. A concrete foundation already has been prepared, and the condenser, which takes care of the exhaust steam, already is nlaced. The generator will be in use in about six weeks, according to officials. It has" been unloaded from the cars, and is standing in the yards ready to be moved into the building. A speed of 3,600 revolutions per minute will be maintained by the generator and turbine. To Enable Repairs. At the present time, three machines are carrying the normal load at the plant. They are generators of 4o3, 2.000. and 1.000 kilowatt capacity. An other 800 kilowatt machine is used ir. cases of emergency. Because the plant has been operating under greater than capacity load for some time past, several of the machines have not been overhauled for months. As soon as the new generator is installed, opportunity will be afforded to tear STOP PILES! down some of these machines and put them in first class shape again. Automatic ash and coal conveyers are two of the improvements put in within the past year and they are rapidly paying their way in reduced expense for labor. On the east side pf the plant, running parallel with the building, is a set of cables, which drag a steel bucket along the coal which has been dumped there by the cars. This bucket, traveling approximately 200 feet, dumps at one end of th-j coal pile into a hopper, and the coal is fed from this hopper into an elevator and crushing machine. Fuel Is Weighed. The elevator carries the coal to the top of the building, above the boilers, where it drops by gravity into I the hoppers for each power unit. Every pound of fuel that goes to heat the toilers is weightd, and a separate account kept for each boiler. Approximately 75 tons of coal are used each day. That the coal conveyor is an efficient innovation is seen in the fact that two men now handle the work formerly done by 12. Inside, where the coal is fed from above instead of being shoveled into the boilers, 15 men in 25 hours, or three men on each shift handle the work formerly done by three times that force. The amount of, ash developed from the coal burned, varies from five to 35 percent of the original weight. Ashes, formerly dumped from the grates by hand, and wheeled out, are now dumped by steam into an ashpit below the boilers, then carried out by CIT THIS OCT IT IS WORTH MONEY Cut out this slip, enclose with 5c and mail it to Foley & Co.. 2S35 Sheffield Ave.. a cable car. elevated to a hopper, and

carried awav bv truck. ! A forced draft, provided by a Tan in j the basement, insures perfect com-i bustion of the coal. A system of baffle plates in tne turnaces catches the gas generated in combustion, and turns it back into the fire. Thus every heat unit is turned into steam. Among the changes in the plant during the past year is that of centralizing the boiler feed pump equipment. Before, these pumps were scattered over the building with the result that they were hard to get at in case of trouble. All have been collected and placed in a single well lighted room, where they may be repaired within a few minutes. Thus a steady supply of water to the various boilers is assured. Can Check Up Pressure. Down at one end of the boiler room is an illuminated dial, the master steam guage for the boilers. It shows the average pressure for the entire plant. Thus men in charge of the boilers may see how they stand as compared with the average pressure. An accurate system of charts, showing exactly what has been done by each machine in the past 24 hours, is employed in the plant. Should a machine become disabled for any reason, and another switched in to replace it, the result will show on these charts. Should the feed water supply be stopped for a minute or two. the charts will show it when they are turned in at the office. Dr. Edwards, a well-known physi cian in Ohio, perfected a vegetable compound mixed with olive oil to act on the liver and bowels, which he gave to his patients for years. Dr. Edwards' Olive Tablets, the sub stitute for calomel, are gentle in their action yet always effective. ITALIAN MERCHANTS BEAT LUXURY TAXES

ROME. Ingenious methods are invented here to avoid paying the luxury tax. The tailor approaches one mysteriously when his suit is finished and asks if he wishes to have a bill when he pays for it in which case he will have to add $30 luxury tax. "If, however, you like to give me $200 here and now. I will give you the suit, and we will say no more about making out a bill," he adds. A foreigner was buying some lace in a Roman shop which cost $24, and, to her surprise, the owner of the shop said: "Would you like me to make you a bill for $3.80 (the luxury tax begins on articles over $4) and then if you will give my little girl a present of $20 that will make things right. Why should either of us pay money to the government that we are not obliged?" DRIVER HURLED 15 FEET. VALPARAISO, Ind.. Oct. 6. Bernard Gwyer, 2S years old, was struck by a Pennsylvania train at Wheeler and hurled through the windshield of his automobile. He was picked up 15 feet away and hurried to a hospital here. It is not believed his injuries will prove fatal.
