Holmes' cold, strong grasp upon my wrist. I understood the whole argument of that firm, restraining gripthat it was no affair of ours, that justice had overtaken a villain, that we had our own duties and our own objects, which were not to be lost sight of. But hardly had the woman rushed from the room when Holmes, with swift, silent steps, was over at the other door. He turned the key in the lock. At the, same instant we heard voices in the house and the sound of hurrying feet. The revolver shots had roused the household. With perfect coolness Holmes slipped across to the

safe, filled his two arms with bundles of letters, and poured them all into the fire. Again and tgain he did it, until the safe was empty. Someone turned the handle, and beat uiion the outside of the door. Holmes looked swiftly round. The letter which had been the messenger of death for Milveron lay, all mottled with his blood, upon the table.. Holmes tossed it in among the blazing papers. Then he drew the key from the outer door, passed through after me, and locked it on the outside. "This way, Watson," said he, "we can scale the garden wall

made between the county commissioners and the five Greenville banks, and waa done contrary to law. The plaintiff asks that the active fund of the county which is drawing two per cent first be exhausted before the inactive fund3 are drawn on. County Treasurer Brown stated that the new board of county commissioners passed a resolution on Sept. 23 directing the county treasurer to draw the funds from the inactive fund instead of the active funds. The resolution was adopted by the county commissioners and approved by the prosecuting attorney. Auto Hits Tree.

A message was received in Greenville that an automobile accident occurred on the road between Union City and Richmond in which one man had three ribs broken and two women were bruised and scratched on the arms and body. Two men, one giving his name as Ivan Cole, and another by the name of Jobes drove into Union City yesterday. They picked up two women at the state line town and started for Richmond. It is said the machine left the road and struck a tree. Cole had three ribs broken and the two women were scratched about the arms and body. Jobes was unhurt. The machine is a wreck. Arrests Follow Robbery. Two more arrests have been made in connection wiht the robbery at the Mong Clothing company, at Bradford

Saturday night, and as a result two

prisoners are in the Miami county jail under $1,000 bond each to await

the action of the Miami county grand jury, for destroying a portion of the stolen goods. I Detective Bruce Reed and Marshal Joe Wombold of Bradford arrested Dewey Wombold, engineer at the waterworks and electric plant, and Wilbur Wise, on a charge of burning up a portion of the goods stolen which j had been secreted at the waterworks' plant. Wombold gave as a reason for destroying the goods, in which Wisej was implicated, that he did not wish ; to be suspected of being implicated int the robbery. Detective Bruce Reed found concealed in a shed in his home, about $75 worth of the goods stolen! from the store. Hiegel Loses Car.

The woman, without a word, had raised her veil and dropped the mantle from her chin. It was a dark, handsome, clear-cut face which confronted Milverton a face with a curved nose, strong, dark eyebrows shading hard, glittering eyes, and a straight, thinlipped mouth set in a dangerous smile.
