FLOWERS ATTACKED BY CORN EAR WORM AND CABBAGE LOOPER
(Special to The Palladium.) INDIANAPOLIS. Ind., Sept. 30. For the first time in many years corn ear worms and cabbage loopers are attacking greenhouse plants and flowers and In numerous instances have wrought 40 percent damage to chrysanthemums, according to a bulletin Issued today by Frank N. Wallace, entomologist under the state conservation department. - Mr. Wallace points out that it is the third brood of the corn ear worm which is doing the damage, and the fact it niierated to greenhouses is due
to a search for food, having practically eaten its way through the late
sweet corn crop.
Investigation shows that practically
each ear of late sweet corn is infest
ed with from one to eight worms. The worm also Is found on beans, late tomatoes, squashes and pumpkins. There is no relief from this pest when it attacks food products because the poison sprays necessary to kill it render the vegetablese unfit for human consumption. In the opinion of Mr. Wallace this late brood of worms is favorable to a small crop of worms next spring, providing we have frost in the next week or so to kill them. However, if this brood survives this winter, devastation of crops from this source next year probably will reach an alarming iiure, he believes.
