AVERAGE OF OVER SI 2 FOR STANDING CORN AT M'G AW AUCTION The W. L. McGaw farm of 440 acres lies four miles south of Richmond, on the Beeler road, one mile west of the Liberty pike. This farm was the tcene of one of the largest Reneral farm sales of the season on Wednesday. Mr. McGaw Is coming to town to live, and the farm will be operated on shares by Lawrence Turner, who has assisted in working the big acreape ror some time. The large and attractire farm home, with handsome lawn,- is being vacated by the McGaws this week, and tho Turners will take immediate posses sion, it is stated. The size and char acter of the sale drew a large crowd, principally of men who came with the idea of buying, although there were a number of ladies present, as Is usual. but the lack of furniture and house hold gear in the sale doubtless caused many farm women to remain at home. A sale of household furnishings always assures the presence of a large num ber of women at farm sales, in quest of needed articles at bargain price Corn. Oats and Hay. After selling about 90 acres of standing; corn a field of 23 acres re mained. This field had been reserv ed for silage, and is to be ensiled on Saturday, weather permitting: at least as much of the acreage so needed will be put in. The first bid on the corn was for choice of five acres at $20. by Isaac Wilson, who paid the top of the sale Roy Turner followed with a bid of $16 for 15 acres. From that on, the corn, which was in various fields, sold in various sized patches at different prices, the general average running between $12 and $13 per acre, ac cording to the statement of the clerk, of the sale. There were 40 tons of good mixed hay in the mow; also 400 bushels of Silver Mine oats in the bin, and 250 bushels of old corn in the crib. Arthur Curme, who was the top bidder at 47 cents, took the entire lot. When the 400 bushels of oats were put up, there were a number present, it ar peared, who wanted small lots for need. But luck was against them,, as the high bidder, Wiliam Buckland, decided to clean up the lot at his bid of 31 cents. The 40 tons of mixed hay in the capacious barn mow sold at $10.25 to $11.25 a ton. Joseph Ralston, Fred Turner, Ed. Faucett and others dividing the lot. Mr. Faucett took 10 tons at $10.25, and Barney Wood, of Boston township, took two tons at $11. Fred Turner paid $30.75 for 3 tons. Live Stock on Sale. A glance at the sale bill shows that 7 head of horses; 10 of cattle, and 150 hogs comprised the live stock put up. The horses were offered first; the cattle came next, followed by the hogs. A black, 6 year old mare and a black gelding, which matched her well, went under the hammer, the mare being bid up to $140 by James Beckman, and the gelding to $90 by Marion Lybrook. The pair was then sold as a team, and brought $250, Mr. Lybrook being the buyer. A coming 3-year-old, unbroken mare was awarded W. A. Smith at $39. An 8-year-old farm mare and lusty big colt, sold separately at $140, but when offered as a pair did not reach the $160 ?et as the understood Inside price, and may have been withdrawn from sale. Cows and Hogs. When the cows were put up Albert Parshall was the first buyer, his choice being a red cow at $62. J. Turner is accredited with paying the top in the cow sale, his choice beiBg a solid black cow, with black bull calf at side, for which he paid $75. Bob Common (elected a red cow at $62; E. Routson got one of the same kind at $52; Joe Special CORD Guaranteed 10,000 Miles. For Friday and Saturday Special 35x5 Fabric Tires 30x3V2 Tires Richmond

Helms figured he picked out a bargain in milkers, at $38 and Simon Ammerman declared himself well satisfied in getting a Jersey mother and calf at $45. Dan Crouch also selected a milker before calling it a day and Will
Brumfleld invested $71.50 In Jerseys. i Farmers who are supposedly good judges of hog values declared that com petition had resulted in raising the price of hogs to the limit of present values. Five heavy brood sows sold at $30 each to H. Bertram, thus topping the sale. James C. Bright, of College Corner, got 7 black gilts at $14 apiece, and incidentally took the six sheep in the sale, at $5.75 a head. Fred Turner got 4 gilta at $13.50, and Gale Smoker paid $10.10 for one pen of ten head. The balance of the hog3 sold according to weight and quality, to numerous buyers. Farm Tractor Brings $520. The feature of the implement sale was a Fordson tractor, new this spring, with a two-bottom Deere 14-inch tractor plow. This outfit was considered a great bargain at $520. Earl Helms was the buyer. The display of farm implements was rot exceptionally large, nor were there any outside prices paid, buyers bidding according to their needs and the char acter of the article desired. Farm tools do not make a broad appeal at this season, as spring farm work is I . i . . V. . .. ' BCriai luuiuiis awaj. , Sale Totals $5,935. I Farm sales totaling more than $5,000 are a little out of the ordinary this fall, the average falling below. The McGaw sale netted $5,935. which places it among the largest sales of the season, aside from sales of acreages. Frank Taylor, of the First National, made the settlements, assisted by Walter Farlow as field clerk. Quite - a number of trucks were on hand and stock began to move immediately after the close of the sale. Weddle and Hindman cried the sale. Elkhorn Ladies Serve Lunch. It so happens that this is the first time this season that the writer has had the pleasure of attending a sale where the ladies, of Elkhorn church served the lunch. This old church is widely known and venerated in eastern Indiana, and much historical matter has been written around this church and old pioneer burial plot. The ladies present and serving at the McGaw sale, were: Mrs. J. S. Helms, Mrs. W. S. Grimes, Mrs. James Etoy, Mrs. C. F. Williams, Mrs. John Beeson, Mrs. Beeler, Mrs. Jesse Turner, Mrs. Anna Turner, Mrs. Perry Rude, Mrs. Jennie Beeson, Mrs. Nora Farlow, Mrs. Minnie Beeson, Mrs. Elizabeth Shendler, and the Misses Mabel and Lucille Helms and Miss Irene Williams, all members of the Elkhorn Ladies' Aid society. The liberal patronage assured a nice profit for their church fund. MAY INCLUDE INDIANA IN NEW QUARANTINE AGAINST CORN BORER WASHINGTON, D. C. Sept 29. Inclusion of the state of Indiana in a new quarantine against the European corn borer is expected soon, according to the announcement of a new quarantine by the department of agricluturc. A formal hearing to determine whether the newly infested reeions shall be quarantined, or the practice of quarantining against this pest shall be abandoned altogether, will be held in Washington at 10 o'clock. Oct. 11 The statement of the department of agriculture says: "This insect is now so widely distributed that it is neces sary to consider the adoption of regional quarantines, or as an alternative, the complete abandonment of all quarantine action. It is an open ques tion wneiner ine protection of non miesiea regions that can be secured v.. i . . luruugn quarantine action from now on, will justify the expense of enforce ment and the interference with com merce. Official Call. The official call to the conference states that "The secretary of agricul fllrO h9Q infnrm.tlAn Un V.A 1. , . . ture has information that the Euro pean corn borer, for which the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Pennsylvania were quarantined, is now known to occur also in Maine and Ohio. "If seems advisable, therefore, st this time, to consider the establishment of a quarantine extending from Lake Michigan southward along the western border of Indiana to the Ohio and Potomac rivers and of restricting or prohibiting the movement from these states or from any infected districts therein, of corn, and broom corn (including all parts of the stalk, Sudan grass, celery, green beans in the pod, beets with tops, spinach, rhubarb, oat and dye straw, as such, or when used as packing, cut floweis or entire plants of chrysanthemum, aster, cosmos, zenia or hollyhock, al.o cut flowers or entire plants of gladiolus and dahlia, except the bulbs thereof without stems, and othor herbaceous plants." and broom corn including all parts of the stalk, and it is the corn crop that suffers most severely from this pest While all of Indiana would be in cluded in the new quarantine, this would be primarily for administration purposes and it is not probable that any large districts in thi3 state would be restricted immediately. The latest infestation is only in the state of Ohio, six counties along Lake Erie having been infested, it is believed from Ontario, where infestations were reported in 1920. Consternation was spread among farmers and business men of the corn belt a few years ago when the presence of the European corn borer was first reported in the United States. Judging by its depredations in the European countries, it was felt that the most important crop of this coun try was doomed unless the pest could I be exterminated. Support Department. Extensive articles were published in all the farm magazines and the de partment of agriculture was heartily! supported in its immediate quarantine of the states mentioned in the statement above, and its strenuous efforts to ward the elimination of the insect. Large areas of land were sterilized with live steam, huge movable plants being used. All trash that could possibly harbor the borer was gathered and sterilized or burned, and even some fields were gone over with tne live steam jets, this being the only sure means of killing the borer. Further experience, however, dem onstrated that for some reason, prob ably the climatic conditions, the borer can not do as much damage here as in Europe, but it is still sufficiently dangerous to cause grave concern to corn growers living near infested districts. Even though the borer may not be sufficiently dangerous to drive out corn altogether as a crop of the Mid die West as was thought might be possible at first, still it is certain that it will do enough damage to cut yields and profits considerably, and with them, the prosperity of this section of the country,' which depends upon this HOW TO REDUCE VARICOSE VEINS Many people have become despondent because they have been led to believe that there is no remedy that will reduce swollen veins and bunches. If you will get a two ounce original bottle of Moone's Emerald Oil (full strength) at any first class drug store and apply it at home as directed you will quickly notice an improvement which will continue until the veins and bunches are reduced to normal. Moone's Emerald Oil is very concen trated and a bottle lasts a long time J that's why it js a most inexpensive treatment. It has brought much comfort to worried people all over the country and is one of the wonderful discoveries of recent years and always bear in mind that anyone who is disappointed with its use can have their money refunded.
