"The Love Pendulum" By MARION RUBINCAM

Chapter 68. The amount of gossip I began to hear astonished and hurt me. I remember sitting and watching Ella, who told most of it to me, with my mouth almost falling open from surprise. We spent a lot of time on the porch in those days, while the warm sun came through the vines I had planted quick growing vines for temporary Fhade, and had brought over the wicker porch furniture I had bought

for my old house two years back. I Ella sat In one of the wicker armchairs, sewing. She was making fine linen handkerchiefs for Christmas presents, and though this was only June, she was working busily at them. She had been engaged, and something had gone wrong. The engagement was broken off. I dared not ask about it, but I suspected that was the reason why Ella was growing bitter. She was so much like she was before and so different. Strong; irregular, not unpleasant features; intelligent eyes with light, stubby lashes; end a naturally good skin these proved the limit of her possibilities. She could have been good looking but she had let her skin grow coarse; her eyebrow were allowed an unkempt appearance; she took no care of herself in any way. She was growing round shouldered

from a careless method of standing, her walk was awkward because she carried herself badly. She wore ugly shoes that emphasized her large feet, and clothes that bunched where they should have been smooth, and that pulled where she needed fullness. She was broad shouldered, flat chested, broad hipped. She could even yet

make herself . attractive if she i wanted.

Today she was unusually talkative

gether they are ruining the child's health, so for his sake, they'd be better apart. This seemed only common sense when I said it, but Ella stiffened.

Of course, you d think a woman should leave her husband if she couldn't get on with him," she observ

ed bitingly. "But most people think that them "God hath joined together'

' Please don't," I cried, and the tears started to my eyes. Ella turned suddenly, and all the hard shell she had built round herself against me melted

at the sound of my crying. "I'm awfully sorry, Connie, I'm aw

fully sorry." she kept repeating until I

had myself under control again.

"I had to leave Win. I couldn't help it I didn't want to," I began, passion

ately trying to justify myself. "I know I thought it might happen. Win was always so pig headed and stubborn," she answered. "Never mind the gossip here. There's always a lot of it." She left soon after. I knew then I could never find the peace and quiet I

wanted with the people here. I had to make my own happiness. That evening I wrote asking Ellen to come to me bringing Mrs. Anderson's baby tor the summer. That much I could do I could give the baby another summer of good care and proper food and fresh air. And I wrote a long letter to Colin. Tomorrow Colin Comes. - "

AN EYELASH CREAM There has always been a big demand for a cream or tonic to make the eyelashes long and thick. In my opinion at least, very few preparations really are effective. Vaseline, the standard remedy, is not a bit of good because it is a mineral product, and as such is not absorbed by the skin and has no nourishing value. The best formula I know is: Oil of sweet almonds (English) 4 drams Cocoa butter 1 dram Parawax 4 drams 1-Anoline dram Rosol oil 2 drops Everything that , is in this formula encourages the growth of hair if there

is any root. This formula you can mix yourself by melting the lanoline, cocoa butter and wax and the moment

"Yes, it was too bad." A lot of de

tails followed, too sordid to reneat

There had been a scandal, Martha had returned unexpectedly from a trip out of the town, to find the girl in her house.' There was a quarrel. Everyone knew of it. The girl was fairly driven from the town, "serves her right," Ella added. "But but Martha went right on living with him," I said, genuinely shocked. "Well, but she was married to him." To Ella, this seemed to settle any question. ' a - "Of course, he isn't the only one," Ella confided, holding the dainty little handkerchief off and inspecting her work on it. "She got awfully interested in a young fellow here. I won't say his name as you might know him and they say " and more details followed. They were mostly assumptions and deductions, based on the fact that Martha had gone on a visit supposedly to her mother, for a week, and the other man had also been out of town that week! On this slender thread of circumstantial evidence, Wellsville had hung a very weighty amount of gossip. Of course, I say they should separate," Ella concluded. "But people think they'd better stay together for the child's sake." "It seems to me that by staying to-

If you are going to begin this" as a treatment I would advise you to clip back the eyebrows and eyelashes a little distance and then to use the cream tonic every day. Clipping the lashes stimulates a heavier, thicker growth and it will only take a few weeks for them to grow back to their

Dear Mrs. Thompson: There was

a joke played on me. Later the girl who played it stopped speaking to me. I can appreciate a joke, but this girl understood I was angry over it and stopped speaking. I was supposed to have turned up my nose at her, but I never did. Should I tell her this? I don't know what to do. I miss her friendship because I. almost loved her. A couple of times when we were together in a crowd. I think her statements were directed to me, but indifferent parties could answer and so I did not answer. Shall I speak the next time I see her, or let her speak first? I don't know whether or not she cares for my friendship and I -wouldn't push myself on anyone. I walked about a

block alone with her. We couldn t avoid each other. When she left, she didn't speak and I think she might , have. I Please answer as soon as possible,

as I don't know what to do. I dont think it is my place to speak first, but if it is I will do it. ANSWER SOON. Write the girl a note aria tell her that you miss her. Say that you did not take her joke in the proper spirit because it hurt you, but since it was only a joke on her part you do noc want to let it make any difference in your friendship. It is really her place to ask your forgiveness, but since she will not, be big enough to forgive her. The modern bazaar of Richmond Palladium Want Ads.

Are The Ch Thriving ?

Be Mtrru to tpecify "BETSY ROSS" when ordering bread from your grocer.

DARENTS recognize the value of proper A food for the baby, but too often they lose sight of the importance of proper food as the baby grows up. Babies thrive when the milk they get is rich in vitamines. Children and adults thrive when they get enough of this vital substance. It comes in fresh milk, butter, in green vegetables and grains. It comes in a liberal degree in "BETSY ROSS" bread. You can be sure "BETSY ROSS" gives you full food value in vitamines because the pure ingredients that go into it are blended and baked in the perfect manner of which only the "BETSY ROSS" scientific process is master. Don't entrust this important part of any meal to any other bread except "BETSY ROSS." It safeguards your table against deficiency in vitamines, builds health, energy, and immunity to disease.
