WASHINGTON STOCK SCORES SECOND KIT IN 'CIVILIAN CLOTHES'
Scoring approval in its second production, the Jack Bessey company has entered the second week of its stay. The public feels content to settle back for a pleasant winter's feast of drama and farce at popular prices Herbert Duffy, as Sam McGinnlns in "Civilian Clothes." finds a better chance for expression than wa3 offered in "Turn to the Right," the first of the company's presentations. It was enjoyable to see his interpretation of the principal male role. Lines he spoke were often brilliant, and his change from the "cave man." of unpolished manners to the sleek, wellmannered butler was made with hardly a flaw. Early in the season it is evident that George Robbing, the high light in the first offering of the company and a conspicuous individual in the present show, is destined to be the capable comedian of the entire cast. He can't be kept down. Miss Blanche Cook leads the female characters. Much opportunity is afforded her for the best she can exhibit. There is little to rebuke her for throughout the action, and much for wbich to praise her. The mother role again goes to Miss Lota Ellis, who was so admirable in her initial Richmond appearance. While she is called upon for an entirely different mood, she fails not a bit. Jack Emerson has a rather resigned place as Mr. Lanham, husband and father of the principal family in. the play. For their generous share in all that occurs we find Clarence Leroy as General Mclnereny; Arthur Olmi, Jack Rutherford and Sam McGinnis, Sr.: Miss Lucille Husting. Elizabeth Lanham; Miss Bonnie Beck, Mrs. Margaret Smythe; Jay Collin?. Zack Hart. Williams Griggs, bellboy, made but one appearance. The Theatres MURRAY. "Acting on the stage is a bore compared to acting before the camera." This is the rather startling statement made by Myrtle Stedman. who has had long training in both branches of her profession. Miss Stedman's first experience was gained in opera when she, at the tender age of twelve, made her debut as a solo dancer. She later became a successful prima donna in light opera and musical comedy. Since 1912 she has appeared on both the stage and the screen, but she has now cast her lot definitely with the Filent drama, and she declares that she intends to be silent dramatically for the rest of her life. One of Miss Stedman's finest performances la seen in "The Concert," a Goldwyn picture with an all-star cast, which is being f-hown at the Murray Theatre. "The Concert" is a screen version of the famous stage play in which Leo Ditrichstein starred for two seasons. MURRETTE. "Passion," the super-drama now playing at the Murrette, has for its and adventures of the ill-fated little French milliner, Jeanne Marie Vaubernier, who rises from her lowly place among the masses to the command of a king and the nation through her Irresistible charms. Later she be CAUSE SUCH GREAT PHYSICAL WEAKNESS AND MAKE ONE AN EASY PREY TO A MULTITUDE OF DANGEROUS DISEASES. 4 Every human boinjy Is born with a certain quantity of "nerve furce' some with more than others. An event of great significance to the future welfare of Chma, an event made posible only by use of American money, was the dedication recently of a preat comes the storm center in thrillingly tempestuous times when the whole populace revolts because of its hatred of this very product of their kind. Great intensity is added to the dramatic value of the whole narrative through the fact that the object of all this public indignation has lost all I ufr unumuea power wnen sne is obliged to grapple with her opponents. She is more than game in her fearful struggles until a former slave of hers turns traitor to her cause which results in her being incarcerated and later beheaded. Running throughout the play is one of the most gripping love affairs conceivable it being the undying love of Jeanne's first lowly sweetheart, a love which finally brings disaster to him, but not until he has given some gallant demonstrations of how far a true lover will go for the , object of his affections. Pola Negri, the Continental star, por trays the leading role that of the little French milliner. MURRAY MINSTRELS. Continuing its well known policy of always presenting an entirely new and up-to-the-minute show, the Neil O'Brien Super-Minstrels will play their annual engagement at the Murray Theatre, matinee and evening Wednesday, with a production that is claimed to be su perior to any they have previously offered. The first part, which is always a dis tinctive feature of a minstrel program. entails the services of 16 clever comedians, with new songs and material, 16 solo vocalists with up-to-date selections, and an orchestra of IS skilled musicians under the direction of J. H. Del Vecho. The first part setting is said to be a masterpiece in art and novel design. The second part of the show will consist of new feature acts, the first being "The Sleepless Sleeper," or the Tipless Porter, a new dancing novelty different from any yet seen on any 3 2d a

A finale in three scenes has been written by Neil O'Erien, called "White Litenin'", and is regarded as a satirical classic. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE By Bob The vaudeville bill at the Murray this first half is one of considerable variety and first-class exhibition. The La Monts' act with their trained cockatoos is a rare treat. The birds are trained to a perfection and some of their performances include an act on the "teeter-totter." a dance by four of the smartest birds and a head stand by a trained parrot. At the conclusion of the performance the birds are featured in a rescue from a burning house. This act is the climax of the performance and is the hardest to stage. Roos and Foss have a musical program which is full of entertainment. They sing, and Foss proves his ability on musical instruments by playing selections on the saxaphone, cello, trombone and banjo mandolin. Jack George Duo presents a colored comedian who is, without a doubt, the best comedian Richmond has had a chance to see in a long time. He has a new lot of jokes and his appear-J ance on the stage is made very im-i pressivo by the scene setting. In his last act he impersonates a colored minister and he has his audience in a continuous uproar. He is accompanied by an exceedingly pretty girl and she sings a few select songs. In the final act, Tim and Kittv Omeara exhibit the evolution of the various stages of the dance. They first make their appearance in costumes characteristic of the colonial period. Next they make quite a hit with an exhibition of the dance of the underworld, which shows exactly just how the dance is performed. In their next
He wants to know more than actual tonnage. The condition of the ship.her record, the reputation of her owner and skipper are all factors in his choice of a carrier. His mental attitude is the same as that of the Scientific Space Selector who wants to know more about publications than a mere statement of "Net Paid Circulation." The wise Space-Buyer keeps hi3 copy of "Scientific Space Selection" handy and digs deep into the facts set forth in A. B.C. reports so that he can obtain authentic data on where the publication goes, and to whom it goes. He also wants to know about the influence, stability and character of the publication in which he is going to buy white space. All these facta can be obtained from A.B.C. reports. You'll find a carefully audited statement about circulation on the first page and, if you read pages two, three and four, you'll be able to visualize the character of the publication and to answer the question, "Will this medium help to sell my goods?" The capacity for taking infinite pains becomes, every year, more applicable to Space Buying. :aggerated claims, misleading figures, general statements are looked upon with critical eyes. Ded active reasoning dominates space selection, as it does every other business preposition. That is why A. B.C. reports represent the back bone of space buying. They are correct, informative, and clearly set forth but to reap the full benefit of A. B. C reports they must be studied for more than the mere statement of "Net Paid Circulation."

OLD TIMERS' JARGON HEARD IN NORTHWEST WHEN SETTLERS MEET (By Associated Press) TACOMA. Wash., Sept. 27. The Chinook jargon, the prevalent means of communication in pioneer days between traders of all nations and the Indians, is still heard in the Northwest, when old settlers meet in reunion or at pioneer picnics. The jargon is said to date back to the early part of the ISth century when English pnd Spanish navigators adopted certain vowels and consonants to convey their meaning to the Indians. The dialect grew in the course oi the years, until finally words were evolved to express almost every idea that mieht occur. It was the uni versal language during the early trading period, and was known by the Indians, English, French. Spaniards, and Americans alike. 'One of the first things a settler did when coming to the northwest was to learn Chinook so that he could converse with the Indians. Each tribe had a language cf its own, but all knew Chinook.
