ON NATIVES1 HEALTH M ADE STUDY SUBJECT Bv Associated Press) HONOLULU, T. H.. Sept. 23 The fffect of storms and other atmospheric disturbances upon the climate, the health, minds and activities of the peoples of the Pacific and upon agri

culture and industry is being studied

here by Dr. Stephen S. Visher, as

pociate professor of geography at the University of Indiana, who received the Bishop Museum Fellowship from Yale university this year. "The effect of storms upon ships at f-ea has been studied extensively, but little thought has been given to the influence of storms upon the health, minds and activities of people in the storm-swept regions," he said In explaining his -work. "To this subject I will devote at least a year of study in the Pacific islands, gathering together nil the known data, which, with my

own observations will be published." Will Study Kona Wind. The Kona winds, the most severe which reach Hawaii, will be observed very closely by Dr. Visher, he said. "The Kona wind results from a difference in intensity, in low air pressure areas." Dr. Visher explained. "If this wind is strr.ng enough to overcome the trade winds, we have a strong southerly wind, sometimes called 'the s-ick wind, because it is hot and depressing. These winds travel from r.O to 100 miles an hour in this region hut their velocity becomes much greatr r near China and the Indies."

A considerable part of the foundations of the City of Venice rests on piles that were driven into the muddy shallows of the Adriatic more than 1.000 years ago. The tallest structure of the city for many years was the campanile or bell tower of St. Mark's cathedral. It was a massive structure of brick which rose to a height of 325

feet, and the piles for its foundation! were driven in the year 874. The first campanile was built in 900. In 1329 the foundation was enlarged by driving more piles, and the tower was rebuilt. In 1512 an earthquake brought it tumbling down, but a new campanile was immediately erected.! This fell July 14, 1902. owing to the: cradual failure of the foundation.' New piles were then driven and a

new campanile was erected in 1905 an a reinforced concrete foundation. The oldest known timbers that have Deen preserved under water are the piles discovered in 1853 in Lakes Constance and Neuchatel of Switzerland. On those submarine timber foundations prehistoric men of the stone and bronze ages built their villages more than 2.500 years ago. The stumps of the piles still remain in the lake bottom in a rather cozy condition, cov

ered several feet deep with the shards

of primitive rottery, the bones and horns of animals that had been consumed for food, and scattered among them are stone implements and ornaments. These villages were very ancient when Caesar first led his Roman legions into Helvetia. Belle Isle bridge was built only 40 years ago. GRAIN MEN GET U. S. LOAN WASHINGTON.
