Building Activity; Increases
A report just made public shows that construction activity throughout the United States in August was four per cent greater than in
August, 1920.
Building contracts for last month in the cen
tral west (comprising Indiana, Illinois, Iowa,
Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri and portions of pastprn Kansas and Nebraska) amounted to
$60,245,000, an increase of three per cent over last July. Included in the August total for that section of the country were the following items: $17,148,000, or 28 per cent, for public works and utilities ; $14,261,000, or 24 per cent, for residential buildings; $9,787,000, or 16 per cent, for business buildings ; $9,016,000, or 15 per cent, for
educational buildings. During the first eight months of this year contracts awarded in the central west district have amounted to $444,418,000, which is practically equal to the average for the first eight months of each of the five preceeding years. During August the amount of contemplated new work reported in that district amounted to $82,088,000, bringing the total amount of work reported this year up to $972,170,000, which is more than double the' amount of contracts awarded in the same period. Reports on construction, activities indicate ' that there is a vastly greater amount of con
struction needed by cities and towns having
populations 025,000 or less than by the larger cities. Returns from a questionnaire sent to 1,000
chambers of commerce x indicate a shortage of 822,905 houses in the smaller class of cities and towns.
Compared with this, the larger cities need
319,528 houses. This means, it is stated, that the expenditure in the next few years to relieve
the housing situation in the country will be over one and a half times as great in the smaller cities as in their larger neighbors and that, great as
the shortage is in the larger cities, the chief de
mand for housing construction will be in the smaller cities for many years to come. The re
ports indicate a particular demand for apart
ment houses in the smaller cities.
It 13 estimated that the dwelling shortage in
the United States is now 1,142,433. .

Community Service Activity The summary of the , Richmond community service for the summer months reveals activity in many departments of recreation. The organization of the recreational features of the community has been extensive enough to include nearly every branch.
The report, for instance, shows not only that baseball leagues were organized, but also that 94 programs of social games were conducted for churches, lodges, picnics and reunions, and that leadership for all kinds of social gatherings was furnished.
More than 1,200 persons attended outdoor
neighborhood gatherings arranged by the service
and 21,955 attended the playgrounds which are
under the supervision of the organization.
The service also organized a number of ath
letic and recreational organizations which are carrying on work that appeals to persons directly
affiliated with the clubs, and to others who en
joy these forms of sport. Officers, of the service have been kept busy with the program, it would seem from the multiplicity of activities that are listed in the report,
Plans for the organization of work this winter
are under way.
Rippling Rhymes By WALT MASON
HARD ON HIRAM Low lies the form of Hiram Horner, out in his boneyard bower; he swung his car around a corner at forty miles an hour. He might have made the curve at twenty, with safety first in view; for he had time to spare a-plenty; no urgency he knew. Before him stood a mighty hoarding
that shut the street from sight; but madly he went henry-fording, and turned sharp to the right. Around the turn a truck was plugging, a truck of ample power, and into it old Hi went chugging at forty miles an hour. It was a mad and foolish caper for one possessed of brains, and with a sheet of blotting paper we soaked up his remains. Now other fools may go a-flying, inviting sudden death, but Hiram in his crate is lying, beneath the dewey heath. And other nuts will make us shiver as up the pike they pass, but Hiram, in his little flivver, no more steps on the gas. And fans will still be pinched for speeding, and made to dig up rocks, but Hiram Horner, little heeding, is resting in his box. Oh, horns will honk and cutouts thunder, and cylinders will bit, but poor old Hi is sleeping under three wagon-loads of grit.
TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew. Adams, Author of "You Can", "Take It", "Up" ON HOLDING HANDS If I were to be asked what sentiment really meant, I would hesitate as to my definition. But 1 would say that it is one of the most useful forces in life. When you come into a warm room with a fire-place in It, burning brightly, after being out in the cold, you at one feel comfortable and glad. That's what sentiment does to one's soul. It makes one happy. I once heard a president of the United States state in a political contest that the greatest things in life were those of sentiment. A young man and a girl walk along the street. They are holding hands. Sentimental you say. But how happy they look! When the child is afraid it rushes to get a grip on the mother's or father's hand. And then it feels confident that no ill can come. There is something in the touch of a hand that reassures that explains without the use of any words, be they ever so well meant or well said. I have seen the press of a hand seem to do more than the best skill of the doctor in the sick room. When I have been particularly discouraged and in need of spiritual uplift, I have said to the kind God I know Father, hold my hand a little while, won't you please? And then something happens and I go to sleep, or arise strong for the day. Hands were made for a large number of purposes. But one of their best uses. I shall always believe, is that they should be held by someone able to make love run through them and warm them. Don't be too proud, or too afraid to hold somebody's hand occasionally. The gain of happiness will be largest to you!

There are so many hypocrites there." "Oh, don't let that keep you away," said Bishop Bratton, smiling. "There is always room for one more." An old colored mammy came in for her monthly allowance. "My husband gained 20 pounds and I increased my weight over 25 pounds taking Pepgen," says Mrs. Henry E Millikan, of 115 East Raymond Street, Indianapolis. "When we started gaining weight we knew we were on the
road to health and we knew Pepgen I
was a great medicine. "In my own case the trouble was a general run down system. I had been in that condition for several months. I kept losing weight and finally went down to 72 pounds. I felt tired and worn out. Some days I could hardly, drag myself around the house. Nearly every day I suffered from spells of dizziness. Everything seemed to become black. I'd have to catch hold of a chair or anything to keep from falling. My appetite became very poor. I also was nervous and couldn't 6leep soundly. "Pepgen brought wonderful results. I have a splendid appetite now and eat three big meals each day. The tired, worn out feeling has disappeared. My system seems stronger generally. Those spells of dizziness I had before are all gone. I sleep
better than I have for years. I think the best thing, however, is the way I've gained weight. In all, I've gained over 25 pounds. "My husband was in about the same condition that I was. He felt tired and worn out. His appetite was poor and the food he ate did not taste right. Since taking Pepgen his weight has increased from 145 pounds to 165. He has a good appetite and enjoys his meals." Pepgen is a new system tonic which is now being specially introduced at Quigley's Drug Stores, Richmond; B. A. Carpenter Drug Store, Cambridge City, and other leading drug stores in nearby towns. Advertisement.
