COACH MOWE FINDS THIRTY-THREE MEN AT FIRST PRACTICE Thirty-three men were present at the first Earlham football practice of the year on Reid Field Monday afternoon and reported again Tuesday morning at 9:30. Considering the fact that a few of the veterans have not yet reported, Mowe was fairly well pleased with the showing, although he stated that it was impossible to size up the situation at the first practice. General limbering up exercises and wind sprints were the order of the day. Coach Mowe expects to spend the first week getting the gridders in first-class physical condition and in setting forth the fundamentals of the game. The latter Is necessary, he stated, because of the inexperienced condition of a large part of the material. An extremely light eleven seems to be a certainty, so Mowe plans to concentrate his efforts in developing a speedy backfield and hard-hitting interference. Captain Hinshaw has not reported. but is expected to don his uniform Wednesday. Last year's letter men who were on duty yesterday are Ivey, Carter, Emslie, Wenbin, Bookout. Beasely. These men and Hinshaw will form the nucleus of this year's eleven. This will mean that practically a new line will have to be built up by the Quakers. Look to Bowles Herb Bowles is expected to make a strong bid for one ot the' end positions, as he is ono of the most promising of last year's subs. Among the new material, Winslow, of Fairmount, probably has had the most experience. He should develop into a fast end or backfield man. L. Pennington, a member of last year's squad, has plenty of weight and should go strong for aline position. The other old Earlham men who are back in uniform are Raiford, Mendenhall, Eades, Delph, It. Robinson, and Taylor. Dalton, Earlham's star half-miler, also was out yesterday. Among the new material are Winslow of Fairmount Davis of Rushville, Meyers of Spiceland. Conaughty of New York, Stidha mof Richmond, Ewing and Thornberry. . BAKERS, BANKERS, END FIVE INNING BATTLE WITHOUT DECISION After battling for five Innings on even terms the postponed game between the Bankers and the Bakers was called on account of darkness, at the end of the fifth Inning with the score 4 to 4. The g&me was slow and uninteresting, there being very few thrills connected with the contest. The Bakers had the game within their reach in the fifth frame when with a man on second and two down. Fry threw Mason's tap to the fence allowing the tieing run to score. Dunham's Support Poor Both pitchers were working well but the support of Dunham was not as good as that given Boyd by his teammates, going through the entire contest without an error which is rarely done in a Commercial league game. Tuesday afternoon the Press and the Police will play off their postponed game. Wednesday afternoon the Maher Meats and the Postoffice will play their game. The score: Bakers 202 004 7 4 Bankers 200 11 1 6 0 Dunham and Runnels; Boyd .vnd Kiser. PIRATES BREAK EVEN; LOSE SINGLE POINT (By Associated Press) NEW YORK. Sept. 13. By breaking even in a double-header with Boston yesterday the Pittsburg Pirates lost single point in their efforts to overtake New York in the National league. The latter club, which did not play had a nine-point margin over the Pennsylvanias today. No other major league teams played yesterday. Pittsburg outfielders were busy in the first game with Boston, won by the former in the fifteenth inning. Of 16 outfield putouts. Left-fielder Bigbee made six. Center-fielder Carey seven and Right-fielder Robertson, three. Catcher Schmidt of Pittsburg al5 made 11 putouts. Western clubs In the American league today invaded Eastern cities while the eastern National league teams were scheduled to play in cities in the Western section of the circuit." The Cleveland club went to Philadelphia minus the services of Manager Speaker, who, it is announced, will be out of the game indefinitely due to an injured knee sustained in a game at St. Loui3 Sunday. INFANTRY TEAM LEADS IN RIFLE TOURNAMENT CAMP PERRY, O., Sept 13. When firing resumed in the Herrick cup match of the National Rifle association tournament today the United States infantry team -was leading, with a total of 1,172 out of a possible 1,200.
