Shake Off Fear, Says Secretary Davis

Secretary of Labor Davis, in his speech at Detroit on Labor Day, had many salutary things

to say, not the least among them being his opinion that faith and courage are essentials in re

storing prosperity.

"Above all else, we need to shake off fear and

take on faith and courage," said Mr. Davis.

The opinion of the secretary of labor is not

original with him, but has been expressed a num

ber of times by financiers, industrial leaders, and

heads of big business concerns.

Courage is a quality of soul that does not

quail before obstacles and knows not the despair

of pessimism.

Quite a few Americans laid the foundation of

their fortunes when others feared to invest and

to back their own judgment in the face of pes

simism. Too often 'we call them lucky, when

in reality they were only courageous enough to do things when others despaired of accomplish- ' ing results. ..! In the brightening hours of our industrial and commercial revival, fear and despair should give way to the faith and courage that speeds 1 activity and rejuvenates the whole business sys- ! tem.

The Opening of School j The opening of school in the county and city

educational systems is of importance not only to

the pupils, but, also to the parents. Too many

fathers and mothers hail the re-opening of

school with a sigh of relief, for, in their erron

eous judgment, it relieves them of the task of

supervising the child's development and turns it

over to the teachers.

Parents have come to depend entirely too much on the teachers personally and upon the school system collectively for the training of their offspring. They send the boys and girls to school in much the same spirit in which a person sends his automobile to the garage for repairs, leaving the entire job to the teachers, instead of considering themselves duty bound to watch carefully how the child advances in learning.

The development of the child in the school room should have back of it the strong and constant support of the father and mother, manifested in a personal interest and supervision. Wherever fathers and mothers show an absorbing concern about the school work of their sons and daughters, it very quickly asserts its benign influence in the progress of the boys and girls. Teachers mold the character of their pupils and train their intellects. Too often they are the only positive factors in the development of a child. The indolence or neglect of the parents often leaves the entire process of character development and the attainment of learning to the instructors. And it is a credit to the profession that they have succeeded in spite of the parental handicap.

THE CRIPPLE Old Jimpson. Jones has. spavined limbs, he cannot use them .any more; the gay world round him scoots and 6kims, as he sits by his cottage door, and casts bis tired and ancient glims on autos passing, score by score. The autos glitter like a etax, they're painted up in gorgeous tones; the back seats often empty are, and well might rest soma weary bones; the Joycarts Journey near and far, but no one stops for Jimpson Jones. The drivers look to left and right for damsels who might like to ride; they'd like to show 6ome maidens bright how smooth and fast their boats can glide; and cripplies languish through the night, forsaken, sad, and heavy-eyed. Old Jimpson Jones has bunged-up feet that will not stand the walking test; and shining cars go down the street and show all kinds of pep and zest; he often see3 an empty seat, on which a poor old man might rest. And he is sick to go afield to country roads where green things grow, to see the orchard and the field, the farmyard where the roosters crow; oh, such a joyride well might yield more pleasure than he'll ever know. The autos roar and chug and crash, and throw up clouds of dust and stones, and Eome of them were bought" for cash, and some involve extensive loans, and

Good Evening By ROY K. MOULTON

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adami, Author of "You Can", "Take It", "Up" EFFORT William James once wrote a chapter on Habit. To me it is one of the greatest things ever written in its clear and inspiring form. I first read it in my college text book as a part of his book on psychology. It may now be purchased separately in a little book. This book should be read by everybody young or old but mostly by every young man or woman. Habit is what we are. But back of all habit must come the willingness to do, in other words effort must be spent James says in this notable little book, "keep the faculty of effort alive in you by a little gratuitous exercise every day". Another inspiring sentence is this: "Let no youth have any anxiety a.bout the upshot of his education, whatever the line of it may be. If he keep faithfully busy each hour of the working day, he may safely leave the final result to itself. He can with perfect certainty count on waking up some fine morning, to find himself one of the competent ones of his generation, in whatever pursuit he may have singled out." Many of our efforts go unapplauded. Most, in fact, of all that we do goes unnoticed. But it is the combination of day by day effort that finally brings out the task that the world is compelled o notice. The hero has to give place very quickly. And it is so with the best efforts that we make. We have to keep improving on the best that we do for that too else must pass and be forgotten. But let satisfaction and a medium amount of contentment come about by simply doing our best each day and making the best effort that we know how. For the greatest credit is due to the on who makes the greatest .effort!
