ANNUAL HOMECOMING, BASKET MEETING, AT PALESTINE SUNDAY
GREENVILLE. O.. Sept. 1. A big basket meeting is to be held next Sunday in Woods' grove near Palestine, this county. The picnic Is to become an annual affair commemorating the
home-coming of the soldier boys of Liberty township. Two years ago a
big ox roast was held, and proved a grand success. This year and hereafter a picnic will be held each first Sunday in September. The committee in charge has arranged an Interesting program to be given after the big noonday feed. Some of the speakers include Hon. Marion Murphy. Rev. C. H. Hoeffer and numerous others of note in the county. A saxophone band and male quartette of Williamsburg, Ind., have been engaged to furnish music for the occasion. It is also planned to hold numerous contests and games to keep the interest up to a high pitch the entire day. Townsend to Assume Office Pearl Townsend, county surveyorelect, will assume the duties of the office to which he was elected at the general election in 1920, on Labor Day, Monday, succeeding John T. Herron, who has filled the office for two terms in a very creditable manner. Mr. Townsend, the new surveyor, is well known and has been connected with the surveyor's office for a number of years in the capacity of deputy and in other positions. Mr. Townsend is a Democrat, one of the few elected in this county at the election of 1920. Sues for Divorce Daisy Sharp, who was married to Roscoe Sharp December 30, 1912, at Ansonia, this county, and has one child six years old, has filed a petition in common pleas court through her attorneys, praying for a divorce,
charging him with gross neglect of duty, failure to provide and extreme cruelty. The petitioner also wants
alimony, temporary and permanent, and an injunction to restrain him from disposing of his $5,000 farm. The Sharps are very prominent citizens of Brown township and their domestic difficulties come as a surprise. Held on Serious Charge Alfred Bieller of St. Marys, north of
this city, was arrested Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock by Sheriff Ewing and Probation Officer Alonzo Jacobs, of Wapakoneta, at his home, and was taken to Wapakoneta to face a statutory charge. It was the first arrest in a sweeping
investigation of juvenile crime conditions in St. Marys being conducted by county juvenile authorities. Bieller finally plead guilty to the charge, and was placed under $3,000 bond, and bound over to the grand jury of Auglaise county and locked in jail. New Cases Common Pleas Henry Conn et al vs. A. B. Craig, J. E. Folkerth'and O. L. Perry, commisvoners of Darke county, Ohio, and S. L. Hiatt, auditor of Darke county, Ohio. Injunction and equitable relief. Daisy Sharps vs. Roscoe Sharp. Divorce, alimony and injunction.
LOCAL MAN HOLDS 1826 TAX RECEIPT
A tax receipt for the year 1826, signed by Lewis McClain, county treasurer at that time, is held by Henry Clevenger, 904 North Twelfth street, this city. The receipt is worded as follows: "Received of Henry Duterow $1 28,
his state and county tax in full for the
year 1826."
Henry Duterow was the grandfather
of Mr. Clevenger. The receipt cover
ed taxes for 121 acres of ground, eight
miles north of Richmond. Henry Duterow was one of the founders of the Richmond Palladium, which began as a weekly, and was carried hrough the country on horseback. "The carrier rode an old gray horse," said Mr. Clevenger, "and the papers were carried on saddlebags on each side of the horse."
WORK SCARCE, PUPILS EXPECTED TO ENROLL
IN VOCATIONAL WORK
Vocational education in the Rich
mond high school probably will be upon a higher level of efficiency this year than in any past school year, according to the vocational training dij rector. Reason for this extra quality work is attributed to the fact that in addition to the great care which is being used to get only those students who are anxious and capable of the best work, the requirements for enrollment will be stiffened as the classes are enrolled to capacity. Before a student is accepted he must show an eagerness for the work contemplated and a willingness to abide by the requirements of the vocational department. Parents also must endorse their child's decision by signing an agreement. This agreement prevents any misunderstanding as to what the student is required to do. By this careful means of selection the vocational department is expecting to get excellent material, and consequently be able to turn out well trained tradesmen. Expect Large Enrollment The department is expecting that vocational work this year will be pursued by a larger enrollment than the average. With compulsory school attendance requiring children to be
either a minimum of 16 years old or to have completed the eighth grade, many children who have been out of school will have to return. Already there are indications of enrollments
by children who stopped school work a year or more ago. Lack of employment for Junior labor is another element which will cause added enrollments. Boys and girls who have quit school to work are now out of employment They are voluntarily returning to their studies. At the present time the
drafting and machine sfcop classes are enrolled to capacity. It is almost im
possible to take on more students for
these departments now. Additional facilities may be provided for shop work later.
Two oth,er classes in which students
are being enrolled are the paternmak
ing and printing departments. Fol
lowing the policy adopted last year.
the vocational director is permitting
part time, full time, night school and practical arts work for senior and junior high school boys. Announcement has been made that students who wish to get into either the patternmaking or printing departments should see the vocational director at once and make arrangements. This should be done this week. - No official date for the opening of night school has yetbeen named, but it is believed that the opening night will be. on Monday, Oct 10.
