Prepare Land in Midsummer for Fall-sown Alfalfa

States Department of Agriculture. In the eastern alfalfa region from Pennsylvania south, September is a common time for fall alfalfa sowing, the date varying with local conditions. To get the soil settled it should be plowed not later than early August. Then just before seeding time it should be loosened up for a depth of about 2 inches. If the subsurface is not well packed the conditions will not be favorable for the young alfalfa plants. Alfalfa needs lime. If the soil is deficient, put on at least a ton of the best of air-slacked or its equivalent in other pulverized forms. This can be applied at plowing time or later, before the first har

rowing, tearing in mind that lime

must be well incorporated with the soil to be effective.

Raising seedling dahlias is very fascinating. Gather the seed pods now and bang them in bags in a dry place. Later the seeds can be removed. .

Roses will be starting into active growth again. Encourage them with top dressings of bone meal t wood ashes and keep them well watered. Liquid manures are also beneficial. ,

Domesticgrown common alfalfa seed such as is raised in Kansas or is grown under similar conditions is advised except for the northern part of the Eastern States, where Grimm or some other hardy variety should be used. Do not forget to inoculate the soil. Directions and the addresses of sources from which bacteria can be obtained will be furnished by the Department of Agriculture or your state experiment station, or can be obtained through your county agent. Do not try to see how little seed you can use and still obtain a satisfactory stand. On the other hand, more than 20 pounds to the acre is unnecessary. If the sowing is done in September and conditions are favorable the young plants should reach a height of 12 inches or more before winter. The crop should not be cut, but allowed to go through the winter to permit successful surviv

Well-rotted barnyard manure which is comparatively free from weed3 is the most satisfactory fertilizer for fall-sown alfalfa, according to specialists of the United States Department of Agriculture. It should be spread on the land be

fore plowing, in order that it may become thoroughly incorporated with the soil. Good results also follow from heavy applications to

the preceding crop.

If the manure is not available, a liberal application of commercial fertilizers rich in phosphoric acid

should be made. The percentage of nitrogen may be low, but some

nitrogen should be supplied for the use of the young plants before they become inoculated and are able to secure their supply from, the air. On most clay soils heavy from the air. On most clay soils heavy applications of potash have not been profitable. A combination which has been commonly recommended is muriate of potash 75 to 100 pounds, acid phosphate 350 to 500 pounds, and nitrate of soda 50 to 75 pounds. The cheapest and most satisfactory method by which the consumer may obtain such combination is to purchase the desired ingredients and mix them himself in their proper proportions.

Save Best of Garden Seed

But Store It Carefully Seeds which have been grown and carefully saved should be well labeled and stored or all the previous labor goes for nothing, say experts of the United States Department of Agriculture. Cloth bags are the best containers for large seeds, such as peas, beans, and corn. They should be used also for large quantities of small seeds, but for smaller lots, paper envelopes, made at home or purchased, are most desirable. Ordinary letter envelopes are fairly satisfactory, but usually are not gummed so as to close completely, and if handled carelessly small seeds may sift out of them. Correct labeling is of paramount importance. Every envelope or container should show the kind and variety of seed, the date, Including month and year when har

vested, and the place where grown. For the cloth bags, a slip of paper bearing all this information should be inserted with the

seed. It is very convenient, also to

have a tag on the outside of the bag, but on no account should the inner label be omitted, because of the liability of loss of the outside tag. . ..
