Levies for Macadam Road

Bonds in Townships Fixed

by Comity Auditor Brooks Wayne township's tax levy for payment of principle and Interest on macadam road bonds for the next year will be increased eight cents, according to the estimate compiled by County Auditor Brooks Thursday. The increase of the local levy is due to the building of the Sell and Foreman roads, which will add $35,800 to the amount carried over from previous years. To raise this amount an eight per cent addition to last year's tax levy is necessary. Five Cents Increase. Greene township will be increased

five cents over last year. The .levy fixed in that township last year' was insufficient to meet the expenses dur

ing the year and has caused a deficit

in the fund there. The Green town

ship levy will be 20 cents.

The total amount needed in all the

townships with macadam roads is

.3,dv.s. it is estimated mat u

balance of $28,000 will be on hand

at the end of this year. This neces

sitates the raising of $100,750 by taxes.

The proposed levies by townships

the result of the investigation 13 being awaited. There has been recently an inclination in some quarters here to oppose lighter-than-air craft as too costly and uncertain, but, with one exception, London newspapers today expressed firm confidence that there was a great future for airships. They declared that yesterday's tragic failure would not deter the contin

uation of experiments until the pres

ent stage of progress is passed and safety is established. The trip of the R-34 across the Atlantic and back, and the successful . airship service between German cities, were cited as proofs that dirigibles were of great utility and had immense possibilities. "From such disasters as this," said the London Times, "all human enterprises have risen more fully equipped for success, and it will be so with the airship." Study Wreck Commander Brooke Popham, of the research department, and Major Cooper, of the investigation branch of the air ministry, have gone to Hull to investigate the cause of the disaster.

A conference of air ministry officials was called this morning and it con

sidered the project of holding a public funeral for the victims, possibly in St. Paul's cathedral in this city.

Lord Lee or Fareham, first lord of the admiralty, this morning telephoned Commander Harry L. Pence, naval attache at the American embassy, expressing his regret at the loss of American lives in the airship disaster. He extended on behalf of himself and the admiralty condolences to their bereaved relatives.

WRECK OF

(Continued from rr;e One.) structural weakness developed or that the girders and frames -which were strained in the July 17 flight failed and caused gasoline or hydrogen leaks. If gasoline or hydrogen came

into contact with the exhausts of any of the six engines swung beneath the great envelope . an explosion could readily have been caused, it was explained. The reports that the ship fell in two pieces, however, tends to cause belief in naval circles that structural failures were the prime cause of th disaster, brought about perhaps by too sudden a strain on some weak parts. Have Parachutes. Every member of the crew and passengers of a rigid, it was said at the office of the chief of the: naval bureau of aeronautics, is equipped with regulation safety parachutes and life preservers. The combined equip

ment is fitted into a compact bundle

not larger than a satchel and provided

with a hook and handle. If danger threatens, a member of the crew has but to attach the hook to his life belt and leap over the side to safety. Officers infer from late reports of the disaster that many of the crew must have been killed outright by the force of the explosion, or stunned before they could jump clear of the falling wieck. Naval Craft Ready. Six naval craft which were standing by awaiting orders to proceed to their sea stations along the projected course of the ZR-2 were released for other duty after the receipt of the news of the wreck. While no lane of ships was planned such as was posted to aid the NC boats on their trans-Atlantic flight two years ago, the battleships Utah, Ohio, Wyoming and Arkansas, and the oiler Brazos

together with a destroyer were to take

positions across the North Atlantic tp wireless the weather conditions to the ZR-2 before she started and while she was enroute to this country, in order

to permit her to pick the best route.

It is not thought that the navy will

endeavor to purchase from England any of her remaining rigid airships, but that construction in America will

be undertaken if others are authorized.
