German books were scattered. Colonel Stark laid down the lamp, on the top of a harmonium beside the door, i shall nnt tppn vou waiting an in
stant, said he, and vanished into the; darkness. " I glanced at the books upon the table, and in spite of my ignorance of German, I could see that two of them were treatises on science, the others being volumes of , poetry. Then I walked across to the window, hoping that I might catch some glimpse of the country-side, but an oak shutter, heavily barred, was folded across it. It was a wonderfully silent house. There was an old clock ticking loudly somewhere in the passage, but otherwise everything was deadly still. A vague feeling of uneasiness began to steal over me. Who were these German people, and what were they doing, living in this strange, out-of-the-way place? And where was the place? I
was ten miles or so from Eyford, that
was all I knew, Dut wneuier norm, south, east or west I had no idea. For that matter, Reading, and possibly other large towns, were within that radius, so the place might not be so secluded, after all. Yet it was quite certain, from the absolute stillness, that we were in the country. I paced up and down the room, humming a tune under my breath to keep up my spirits, and feeling that I was thoroughly earning my fifty-guinea fee.

BOVINE TUBERCULOSIS CAMPAIGN UNDER WAY
The campaign being waged against bovine tuberculosis by the bureau of animal industry, co-operating'with the agricultural extension department cf Purdue university, county agents, and veterinarians is progresing rapidly in Indiana, with large numbers of herds beinsr placed on the accredited list when they pass the final testa after being under federal supervision for a year. Reactors, cattle that are afflicted .with . tuberculosis, are . being found constantly and slaughtered under federal supervision. "Farmers and stockmen throughout the state are showing a wonderful readiness to have their cattle tested, because they realize that tuberculosis can not only be transmitted through milk to the general public, but also to members of their own families, who use the milk al the time," said Dr. L. C. Kigin, of the veterinary extension staff of Purdue university. "We are getting many more applications than can be handled at once, but with the big public trend for healthy cattle, we are pushing the work as rapidly as possible."
A peep Into Dame Fashion's dote book shows that there will be fads and odd styles aplenty during the coming season. That changeable woman will never run out of new ideas with which to attract the feminine interest. Here are just a few of fashion's newest fads. At the left is a hat which looks
like a lampshade and which is real-1 for wear with fur frocks and i . .a - i r i t '
ly of Spanish influence. It is edged with deep fringe and trimmed
with a shell ornament which looks for all the world like a high Spanish comb. In the center are milady's next slippers of the season. They are fur pumps. It seems that it is to be a fur winter and so these broadtail slippers have been designed
wraps.
The huge fan at the right will be the new season's rival of the ostrich fan. It is fine black lace embroidered in sequins. It is an odd shape, being longer at one edge than the other, and will be very effective, although perhaps a bit cumbersome, when worn with evening frocks.

MICHIGAN FARMERS POOL THEIR CREAM
LANSING, Mich., Aug. 24. Prescott, Mich., is to have the first producers
cream pool in Michigan, under the direction of the Bureau of Dairying of
the state department of agriculture. The plan is to develop on a demonstration basis the advantages which, it is believed, will accrue to cream producers if they will pool their creara. grade and market it on a quality basis, according to H. D. Wendt, director of the state dairy bureau. Prescott dairymen are reported to have a co-operative association which is marketing ordinary run of cream at 6 cents per pound of butterfit over the general Michigan price, having eliminated half a dozen local cream stations. The dairymen now would market extra grade cream and it is there the Dairy Bureau will try out its cream marketing project.
PART THREE "The matter stands thus. You are probably aware that Fuller's earth is a valuable product, and that it is only found in one or two places in England?' " T have heard so.' Some little time aeo I bought a
small place a very small place within ten miles of Reading. I was fortunate enough to discover that there was a deposit of Fuller's earth in one of my fields. On examining it. however, I found that this deposit was a comparatively small one, and that it formed a link between two very much larger ones upon the right and left both of them, however, in the grounds of my neighbors. These good people were absolutely ignorant that their land contained that which was quite as valuable as a gold mine. Naturally, it wa3 to my interest to buy their land before they discovered its true
value; but unfortunately, I had no
capital by which I could do this. I took a few of my friends into the secret, however, and they suggested that we should auietly and secretly work our own little deposit, and that in this way we should earn the money which would enable us to buy the neighboring fields. This we have now been doing for some time, and in order to help us in our operations we erect an hydraulic press. This press, as I have already explained, has got out of order, and we wish your advice upon the subject. We guard our secret very
jealously, however, and if it once became known that we had hydraulic en-

noticed one incident in the scenario' that called for a smashing good fignt. It was then that Vidor decided he was going to do the thing right or not at all. So he called David Butler and John Bowers, who take the parts of Bill Hendricks, the ranch foreman, and tbt
Sky Pilot, respectively, and spoke thus : "Boys, this scrip calls for a jam-up fight. I am tired of seeing sham scraps on the screen and I want a real fight. Are you fellows game tc go through with it?" Bowers looked at Butler, and Butler looked at Bowers and the two six footers instinctively realized that a real fight wouldn't be especially beneficial to either. "Everything else in the picture Is going to be real." coaxed Vidor.
Butler and Bowers "shook" on it,
and thus was promoted one of the most rousing fights in screen history. RICHMOND
There have been many striking!
fights and brawls staged for legitimate and screen productions, but the free-1 for-all promised in "Outside the Law," the Prisciya Dean picture to be shown at the Richmond theatre next Sunday, is said to outrank them all. It lasted two weeks and resulted in enough broken furniture to fit out an apartment house. A few heads also were broken, but care in the hurling of missiles and conservatism in the landing of stiff punches, kept the casualties within the capabilities of the Universal City dressing station. The fight is the reproduction of a gang fight in San Francisco's Barbary Coast, and takes place in a succession of rooms and passage ways. Several
t scores of huskies took part in the I fight, which was directed by Tod
Browning, maker of the picture. Principal among the fighters were Lon Chaney, the character actor, and Wheeler Oakman. whose fight in "The Virgin of Stamboul" will be remembered as thrilling and realistic. The fight in "Outside the Law." al
though taking two weeks to film, is supposed to take place during two hours. On the screen it has been reduced to two minutes. The only article remaining undamaged in the seA at the conclusion of the struggle, was a small image of Buddha.
