"The Love Pendulum" By MARION RUBINCAM .

THE NEW PLAN Chapter 35 I have since thought that I enjoyed that evening I spent with Ellen at her sister's more than any of the evenings since I had come to the city. The sister, who was also our laundress, lived in a couple of rooms, five flights up, in an East Side fiat house of the cheapest sort. Her husband was a sailor. She supported her three children by washing. She had a certain amount of intelligence and a cer

tain sense of humor that did not desert her. even though she was sick in bed. 'She expects the baby In two weeks," Ellen told me. As we walked along the streets we ceased to be mistress and maid and became simply two women, united in one effort to heln another woman in distress. Ellen's .sister was a long gaunt figure lying in the bed. Her gray hair gray though she was scarcely SO was combed back and ended in a stringy pigtail that lay on the pillow by her. She had deep set, hard, gray eyes, cheeks lined with wrinkles, and a mouth that closed in a grim line, or oftened into a humorous smile. 'I don't want charity," she said rudely as we came in. "I don't want to give charity," I answered suddenly uncomfortable because of my big squirrel coat. "I've been rather ill too, and I thought some of nice things they made for me to eat, might tempt you too." Her face softened a little. "The children mean well, but they ain't much on cooking," she answered. And we began with that, while Ellen heated some delicacies we had brought from my place. "I'm not in want," the woman said. "I go to the hospital in a week and

Heart Problems

Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a young man of 25. I have a girl with whom I have been going for the last two years. I did not love her when I started going with her because we were neighbors and school mates, but we got to corresponding when I was overseas. We stopped going together for a few months because she talked about me. Later she wrote me to coma back and asked me to forgive her. Later we became engaged, but her father and mother do not want her to marry and discouraged her. Her parents always treat me with respect when I am around. She goes with other boys some, and at times seems to think the more boy friends she has the better she likes it. She has ben coresponding with twa young men and one of them she never

saw. This I do not like and tell her

she is wrong, but she thinks not. I had a girl friend with whom I was going and she said I must stop. W3 get along very wel, but sometimes sho talks mean to me and I hate a quarrel. I beg her not to talk mean to mo, but I can't get her to stop. Do you think that we should discontinue our friendship or continue? I love her so much I don't see how I

can give her up. She seems to be

lieve that we can't get along, but I am

sure we can. Her parents say that I go to see her too often. I have gone once a week for quite a while, but am willing to stop part of it. I may be wrong, but I think as long as we do nothing that is wrong there is no harm in seeing each other that often. What do you think? . G. If the girl really loved you she would treat you with more considera

tion. I think you are wasting time to

try to make her more considerate, a girl who is unkind to you before marriage would be doubly so afterwards. My advice is to let her go and try to find another girl. You feel very much in love at present, but time and separation will prove that you can get alon without her and even take an interest in other girls. Once a week is not too often for you to see the girl to whom you are engaged. You are very moderate in your demands on her time. If she and her parents object to a call once a week, you may be sure that your case is hopeless. 4

The sooner you give her up and ad-J just your mind to the separation, the

' happier you will be. HI-: CARKFl l. IN HOT WEATHER When the sun's rays are so hot the stomach and bowels should be kept in regular, normal, healthy condition, so that the svstem will not be upset by a mass of undigested, fermenting;, pois-on-producins food. are safe in the day, and Ellen can sleep here nights when she's through with your work. But the baby has no clothes. . I never had time." . "Please let me make some, I should love to," I begged. "It's sewing" she looked doubtfully at my hands. "I can sew," I answered. "If I don't get them done in time, I'll buy them, but it would be nice to make them myself."

Somehow that evening I got back to

earth again. I felt as though my feet

were touching solid ground. I had

been living up in the air Delore, in a

world of froth and frivolty where nothing was solid and where the nonessentials of life were the only things considered worth while.

After we were home again, I put on

a negligee and sat down by the fire

to think out this new problem. One thing was . evident. Winthrop and I had radically different tastes. He was naturally frightfully extravagant possibly the result of a life in which he had not been allowed to handle money. He had no sense of the value of money at all. I was naturally economical. That is, I knew what I should have for the money spent and though I was compelled to spend much more for things than we could afford, or much more than they were intrinsically worth, at the same time I did not actually throw money away as he did. I loved the quiet, simple, plain life.

That was perhaps because I had been given only the elaborate, fussy, overheated sort of existence. Win, as a reaction against the very placid life of his home, was infatuated with this mad, hurried rush of the city. Perhaps this was a temporary feeling. , Perhaps he would soon tire of this

empty rushing about, as I had tired of

The children j it some time before. Perhaps he would see that there was

nothing to this that evening after evening of dancing, flirting, theatres, cards, of sitting about tables eating and drinking, while watching a lot of very common girls dance awkwardly and sing through their noses, was only a waste of the precious gift of life. Perhaps! But all the other people I knew had done this sort of thing all their lives

and apparently were willing to continue doing it all the rest' of their lives. It was so worthless, so tiring, so utterly boring. If only I could make Winthrop see that! Meantime, as I was refusing to share his pleasures and trying to avoid his newly made friends, I was losing him.

come when he would get used to the other women. And then he might

prefer them! A vision of Gwendolyn's odd, homely, attractive face, with its halo of burning red hair, came into my mind. Then I knew what I was to do. If Win liked the empty life, the

social game, the wasted evenings I had to like them too. I had to play the game the way he wanted it played. I would, and play it better than these other women! When Win came in, quite late, I was still there. "You look rested," he said. "You're not nervous and cross now, are you?" For answer I held out my arms to him.

Tomorrow Playing the Game.

Food Crisis This Winter

That Austria will again have a serious situation to cope with in regard to her food situation this winter when the garden truck and vegetables which have been coming from the country to Murine? the summer months

cease and that the economic conditions have as yet shown no signs of improvement was the opinion of Vern Oskaloosa. Ia., who re-

i,tiv returned from Austria after

serving with the American Friends'

relief in that country. "Only 5,000 instead of 6a,000 children are being fed every week now at the stations," he said, "though as yet it is practically impossible to buy food for children under three years of age in the city." ,

The Starr of today measures up to the high standards of its ancestors, thus meeting the requirements set bypeople of good musical j udgment. The value of a musical instrument should not be measured alone in dollars and cents, but by the effect it has in stimulating the best influences in the home. When you purchase a thing which becomes so nearly a part of the family life, you feel that every precaution should be taken to guard against any mistake in your choice. Buy a Starr-made instrument and you are eliminating any danger of regret, as the same firm is responsible for its construction, its sale and the service which goes with it and is so important to the customer.
