By MARION RUBINCAM
THE STRANGE LADY 1 Chapter 9 I have always thought that this new woman had a strange effect on me from the moment I saw her. For when my aunt introduced us. I did not hear her name. And that was very unusual with me, for Aunt Harriet had been very particular about that sort of thing when I was a child. It was no use asking Win Win never heard the name of a person he was presented to.
But Aunt Harriet was calling her Gwen, bo I knew her first name was Gwendolyn. I never liked the name, it seemed rather a silly word, but
that was my prejudice.
I looked at this st ranged. She was
tall and thin, so thin as to almost be awkward. She had a quantity of reddish hair, quite red in fact, which was cut short and bushed about her

the men." "You made eyes successfully, I should say." My aunt seemed strangely indulgent to this woman I had never seen. "At first! Yes. Ted was an ideal husband in the beginning. I never have been sorry I eloped with him. It's a splendid experience." Win had been looking at her in a fascinated way, as I had also. "That sounds rather ominous as to the ending," he said. The woman laughed again, with a little humorous twist to her mouth. "Perhaps it was a bad ending; perhaps a good one. It depends on the point of view. I divorced him eventually, of course." Just so lightly did
she dismiss the husband ana tne

It was soft and shimmering, a greenish 6ilver, and from her arms, fastened at ntervals wth emerald bracelets, a long shimmering fringe hung, a fringe that seemed to be alive as it quivered and waved and shone with every slightest motion. I could give no guess as to her age

"Have you met the newcomer?" Nedda asked as we came up to her. "Yes. Who is she?" Win wanted to know. "That's what we are all asking. She must be someone great to be here. Mrs. Risdon is obviously making her the guest of honor." We all turned toward the group of which this woman was the center. The music was beginning softly, some couples left the various groups and began dancing. "Mrs. Martin has forgiven our hostess for getting ahead of her," Nedda remarked, looking toward the door. "Here she comes; she's decided to accept and bury the hatchet. My word, she's bringing her count, too!
What do you suppose she wants out

All Car Owners who want to learn how to compare cars are invited To Make These Tests There are 12 vital tests used by automotive engineers in judging cars. Their method is now available to the public simplified but conclusive. No man can really make genuine comparisons without employing this method. All other ways are superficial and frequently mislead. To further introduce this new and approved method of comparison, we announce a second annual Marmon Demonstration Week August 15th to 20th
7k
This provides an occasion for every car owner in this city to know the remarkable qualities of the Marmon 34, as Marmon owners know them. This invitation is open to all please do not hesitate even though you are not in the market for a car. Our aim is to familiarize all car
owners with this new method of comparing cars by score card. Those who accept our invitation will not be importuned to buy. Telephone now and arrange for the appointment: The demonstration will start either from our headquarters or from your home or office, whichever is most convenient for you.
