SINGLE G.
(Continued from Page Nine) takes great pride in the fact that Sin gle G has heaten every horse that ever defeated him. In fact. Single G has beaten every horse that has ver-j diets over him, more times than th? horse has defeated him, with one exception. Napoleon Direct won more times from Single G than Single G won from Napoleon Direct. "Bat Napoleon was retired from racing before Single G came on to be his best," Mr. Barefoot explains. "We didn't get a crack at him when Single G had all his speed.' ' " Becomes Famous. After attracting some atention as a three-year old in 1913, and setting a record for four-year-olds in 1914, Single G became nationally famous j through winning the great Chamber of Commerce Stake at Detroit, on the Grand Circuit, in 1915. That was his first really great performance. His last was in Atlanta last fall, when racing against a fast pacer named Sanardo, he paced three heats in 1:59, 2 and 2:00, the fastest three consecutive heats ever won by a pacing mare, he holds the record for the fastest three heats ever paced m a race. At Toledo, in 1918, he lost the first heat to Miss Harris M. in 1:58 and then came on to win the second and third in 1:59 and 1:59. A summary of his racing career reveals some interesting facts: Year 1913 1914 1915 1916 1917 1918 1919 1920 Record 1st 2d 3d 4h "Won .2:12 4 ,.2:07 11 ..2:02 7 ..2:00 5 ,.2:00 7 ..1:59 10' ..1:59 5 ..1:59 10 $2,375.00 5,630.00 10,245.0!) 6,505.00 6,795.0'J 9,198.75 6,181.25 8,735.00 Total3 59 27 7 5 $55,665.00 Horsemen say that the remarkable thing about Single G is not so muca his speed which other horses have equalled, but the fact that he comes back year after year for more hard races. With the exception of the two diseases that bothered h'im as a colt Single G has always been sound. Even his legs, which show the strain of racing before any other part of a horse's body, have continued sound. Fast in Races. "AH his fast miles have been In races, for we have never babied him along with the exhibition miles," sai-J Mr. Barefoot. "He has made his recorjis in the company of other horses in races in which he had to pace thru feilds of all sizes to get to the front. Working in and out, and around other horses, behaving well, and still showing speed is the test of a race horse Single G has been doing his job like a workman ever since he first went to the races.' Mr. Earefoot's love for the great horse is manifested in many ways. Alter bmgle G won the two big Cham-1 ber of Commerce stake at Detroit in 1915, a wealthy horseman offered $li!, 000 for the horse. Barefoot refused and when asked to set a priceon Single G decided he did not care to se'l at all. He goes over to Indianapolis every now and then, fall, winter anil spring to see the horse, and in summer makes pilgramage3 all over the United States to watch him race. -Single G is known to hore lovers in 14 states, including Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota, in all of which he has won races. The poultry business in eastern Indiana has to worry along without Mr.. Barefoot when Single G is at the track to face a starter. He has journtyed thousands of miles to watch the son of his old mare, Little Gyp, match speed with other fast horses. Little Gyp is Dead. Little Gyp, by the way, died not long ago at the ripe old equine age of 31. Mr. Barefoot says it was like losing one of the family. She had borne and raised quite a family of her own, having been bred to Anderson Wilkes six times. Two of the colts died, but one other besides Single G made a great track record. She was Grace D., 2:06U, at one time three-year-old champion pacing filly. She set a rec LEGAL NOTICE SHERIFF'S SALE By virture of a codv of decr pvpr ntion to me directed from the Clerk of itie wayne Circuit Court, I will expose at public sale, at the Court House door, in the city of Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, on the tith day of September, 1821, between the hours of 10 o'clock a. m. and 4 o'clock p. m. on said day, the following property, to wn: Lots numbered RS, 89 and 90 In Benton Heights Addition to Richmond, Indiana, same being an addition in Wayne Township, to be sold as the property of J. ord for half-mile tracks which later was displaced by William, another Indiana pacer, in recent yeara a great rival of her brother, Single G. Halfsisters of Single G have also 6hown themselves fine animals, the number
including Ruth D., 2:06,4, and Effie Powers, 2:08i, familiarly known to all harness horse fans in the middle west as "Old Aunt Effie." Horsemen interested In pedigrees and blood lines used to turn up their noses at Single G, for they say his breeding is only 50 per cent orthodox. His sire, Anderson Wilkes, by Onward, eon of George Wilkes, rates high, but his dam, Little Gyp, might not pass muster in the register of the aristocracy. Mr. Barefoofs homely old mare was a daughter of a" roan pacing stallion called Shoofly Gyp, which traced back to an old-fashioned Indiana pacer named Tom Crowder, famous in the days of old Blue Bull and other Hoosier plowhorses that sported down the pikes on Sundays. History is not overloaded with facts about Tom Crowder, but it is ?f record that many fast pacers from Indiana trace back to him. Single G is Stallion. Single G is a stallion, but. he has never been placed In service. ' Mr. Barefoot is inclined to believe that he would be very useful in the Btud, because his extreme s-peed, . good physique, and eplendid disposition should "breed on." ' .. - "I would rather he'd stay on the track as long as he can, and continue to improve. He has already passed the point where most horses are retired. Nowadays they are taken, off the track after two or three hard.racing years, but Single G is going to keep on racing until he goes back. Then I'll think of retiring him. If racing 33 intended to improve th' breed of horses, the thing to do is to make the horse as good as can babefore he is withdrawn from the track," The horse is a medium-sized, cleanlegged bay with black mane and tall, and three black stockings. There is no hint of the roan color he might have inherited from his dam. At the start of spring training for the free-for-alls on the grand circuit Single G weighed 980 pounds. He is driven this year by Ed. Allen, who, as the horsemen say, has the key to the animal. Single G has raced for many great reinsmen, including Ed. "Pop" Geers, the late Curt Gosnell, and others, but Allen has handled him in the fastest races. His best single feat for Allen was the victory over Sanardo at Atlanta last year, but Allen likes to tell of a series of races in 1918. Take Hats Off. "We won with him at. Springfield, III., on a Friday of last year, in 2:00i;' and 2:01,,4, over e. mile track." Allen says. "Then we shipped to Des Moines, and won on Monday in 2:06, 2: 03 "54 and 2:01, over a half-mile track. The 2:01 is a world's record for a half-mile track. Then the next Wednesday, a week, we were back In Indianapolis for a match race with William, and we won with the best time around, 2:01. I think no other pacer or trotter ever went miles like those in less than two weeks." The horsemen, watching for news of his performances . in his ninth season of racing, say that Single G is the most noteworthy for the long time over which he' has carried his speed and sound physique. To the layman, however, probably the most Interesting fact in connection with hifS career is his humble origin. Mr. Barefoot does not maintain a racing establlsh- ! ment, and makes no pretense-of being a great horseman or breeder of horses. He owns the world's greatest harness horse simply because he happened to own and be fond of an old pacing marc that he bought ona country road. Yet the owners of and trainers for the finest racing establishments in America take off their hats to him and his bay horse with the white G on his forehead. - FRANCE FLASHES WELCOME TO LEGION MEN AT SEA - .CHERBOURG, Aug. 11. Admiral of the Port Barthes yesterday sent a wireless dispatch to Major John G. Emery, commander of the American Legion, in the name of the minister of marine, welcoming , Major Emery and the 225 members of the legion who are with him on the steamer George Washington, to France. Tho message expressed the good wishes of the French government and of all the French people for the Americans who -fought for common ideals alongside the French in the world war. It was announced tonight that the George Washington was not expected to arrive until Friday. CRANE LEAVES REVAL. REV AL, Esthonia, Aug. 11. Charles R.
