new position today?" I asked vin the next morninK. In spite of the
fact that we had been up dancing uu til three, my summer habits were still with me. and I woke up at eight. "I don't know. I don't think so." Win answered. "I think I'd rather see the city. Will you take me around?"
I nodded, glad to be the one to snow

Oh, that's west" I remarked cas
ually. "What of that?" he asked surprised. "Oh, no one I know lives west." Win began to laugh, the clear boyish laugh I liked so much. I joined
with. I was still a little tired, but I
decided that I would have breakfast in
what a snob I am! I said, "You

extra rest and then we would start.
All that day and the next and the one after that we went around the! town. I had my own car brought out of storage, the little run-about my aunt had given me when I was in 'school, and we drove in that. "I like that huge one best." Win remarked as we ran up the drive by the river. "This is shabby, Connie. Better have it done over." "My aunt's car is too big, and besides, we have to have Blake," I protested. "She doesn't like anyone to run it but him.' "But I like having Blake drive. It makes me feel so very opulent ami important." Win said naively. For a moment I was very much hurt When we had my aunt's town car we were not alone, it wasn't a bit sociable it was so elegant it was oppressive. My aunt, could do that sort of thing very well, she looked the part, shs leaned back against her pale gray cushions in her exquisite gowns ana was far removed from the rude and vulgar world, and liked being in the little low-seated car that let me come in contact with it. Most of all, 1 preferred to wa'k. Then I could readily be with the pe pie. one of them. But as I rarely allowed that privilege, the next best was this shabby, smooth running machine. And now Win wa3 saying he did not like being in it alone with mo he prefferred the isolated splendor of the car and the chauffeur! Then I decided it was silly to feel hurt.
side, near the park, and all those she doesn't want to know live on the wefct side. It is so silly, isn't it? But those that live west can't mix with those that live east, and I suppose those that live too far up in the city can't mix with those that live hero near the drive. Let's live over here and show them we don't care about their senseless social distinctions." But Win had lost all interest in the west end. He suggested we drive near my aunt's place. "She wouldn't like it if I took you too far away from her," was the way he put it. So by September, with my aunt's
help, we sucured an apartment in a district she approved of. It was a block east of Fifth avenue, in a smart new apartment house, i And with my aunt's help, we wed out and bought enough furniture to fit it out. It was a simple enough matter, for we were both so unexperienced we were satisfied to go out and order the contents of the place then we forget it. Three weeks from the time we arrived in New York we were settled. "And we don't have to pay for all
the things at once," Win said cheer
fully surveying the blue taffeta curtains in the living room. "We can pay part and let the rest go until another month. Isn't it tiny?" "Just large enough," I agreed, looking over the rooms with pride.
, "Well new we're here. I guess it's
up to me to go see about my position" he answered. That same day he came back, look
ing very serious. We were to have our first dinner in the new place., cooked by the new cook, and served by my newly hired maid. "They filled my place," Win said Put in another man. A PRETTY NOSE It is always a misfortune when the nose is badly shaped because comparatively little can be done to improve it. That little, of course, is important In the case of the mouth or the eye the expression is much more important than the shape. In the case of the nose the shape, wmch is almost always unalterable, is all important. But the little that can be done is fortunately not difficult. Of course I

A PROMINENT editorial writer says that the records of Caruso's wonderful voice will be enjoyed for a thousand years, and that this is close to immortality. This wonderful heritage for posterity is made possible by the art of industry. But the art of industry has accomplished other things as well. Sixty years ago men found oil in quantities, from which they produced light The Standard Oil Company took that oil and, in addition to light, produced from it, power, and lubricants for the parts which transmit the power not to mention hundreds of other useful products. Fifty years ago people were delighted with the oil which gave them abundant light; but none could foresee the development which thisi"Rock Oil" would make possible. It was the vision and courage of the men who founded the Standard Oil Company that made it possible for the automotive industry to come into being. It is the ability of the men who manage the 'Standard Oil Company (Indiana) of today that has made it possible for the automobile to develop from the clumsy vehicle of twenty years ago to the smoothly-driven machine of today. For the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) constantly anticipated demand and produced" gasoline of such quality, and in such quantity, and distributed it in a manner so thorough, that the automotive manufacturer could produce in large enough quantities to keep his product within the range of the modest purse. The art of industry is exemplified in the achievements of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana), which will live for centuries and benefit posterity in a practical way, as. the perpetuation of Caruso's voice will benefit in an aesthetic way.
