i AND PHILLIES LOSE; REDS IN SIXTH PLAGE CINCINNATI. Aug. 9. Rube Marquard was steady and effective throughout the contest with the Phillies Monday afternoon at Redland field and the Reds captured the contest by the score of 9 to 3. The victory over the Phillies landed the Reds In sixth place, when the Cubs dropped their game to the Giants. ; v. Jess Winters was pounded off the hill by the Reds in the fifth frame and Sedgwick, his successor, was exceedingly wild. He walked five men during his stay on the bill In the sixth and two runs had been pushed over the pan without the ball being hit past the pitcher's box. WILD PITCHES ENABLE KIWANIANS TO WIN Two wild- pitches by Maher in the sLsth round enabled the Kiwanis club baseball team to defeat the Meats Monday afternoon in a Commercial league game at Exhibition park. The final score was 3 to 2. The game was nip and tuck either having a chance for the victory, but the wildnsss cf Maher proved his downfall. Both teams were playing on even terms the breaks favored the Clubmen. The first inning saw the Meats pent two runners over the pan, when Maher drew a pass and went to sec ond when Bone mussed up Lee's bounder. Both runners crossed the pan when Dunham cracked out a dou ble. During the Kiwani3 turn at bat in the first frame they put two runs over the pan and tied up the count. Mowe was given a life on Nick's error, Mat lock worked Maher for a pass. Bone hit safely and both runners tallied. The Kiwanis had a good chance to score in the third, with the bases full and Myers on first he attempted to steal secon dand was out In the run steal second and was out in the run The sixth inning was the game winning round for the Kiwanis, Matlock received a pass, stole second and scored when Maher heaved the ball over Muey's head two times. The game was one of the best played games of the season, each pitcher allowing seven hits and the fielding or both clubs was exceptionally good. THREE BATTERS CLOUT 2 HOME RUNS MONDAY ' (By Associated Press) I NEW YORK, Aug. 9 The feat of hitting two home runs in one day was performed by three major league players yesterday. Roger Hornsby of the St. Louis Nationals was the 'real star with two in one game. Babe Ruth of the New York Americans and William Wambsganss of the Cleveland world's champions hit one in each half' of a dauble header. Ruth now has 41 homers with 54 games to be played. After being held to two hits in six innings, the New York Nationals solved the delivery of "speed" Martin in the seventh for four runs. A base ' on balls by McQuillan of Boston forced across the winning St. Louis run in the tenth inning for the third straight Cardinal victory over the Braves. A one run margin has given Cleveland victory over Philadelphia in each of their past three games. In all of the contests the Athletics outbatted the Indians. A four hit shutout was twirled by Shawkey of the New York Americans against Chicago. All of the Washington players made one or more hits against St. Louis. Rice led with a triple, two doubles and a single. The Senators had only four assists in the field. The major league club record for the least number of assists is one. The Benny Leonard-Lew Tendler bout for the world's lightweight championship will be held at the Philadelphia National league ball park on Wednesday, Sept. 21,it was announced here early today. The promoters heard from Leonard's physician, who said the hampion would be in shape by that time. The match scheduled for Friday night, was postponed when Leonard dislocated his thumb yester day in training.

Bambino Ruth crashed out a couple of homers in the double header between New York and Chicago, Monday. Ruth's efforts Monday brought him up with his 1920 record and he has until Aug. 14 to gather his next circuit wallop. Wieneke was pitching for Chicago in the first game when Ruth hit for the circuit and Dick Kerr tossed over the ball for the second drive. The " Des Moines Western league team set two world s records in a game Sunday against the St. Joseph team. It made more assists than any previous record for nine innings when it was credited with 33. Not an error was made by the team. Hornsby had a field day against Boston Monday. He scored four runs in four trips to the plate. He got three hits, two of which were circuit drives. William Guthrie and "Ducky" Holmes, Western Leafue impires, were fined $50 and $10 respectively in court today when they pleaded guilty to assault and battery on T. Haines, a spectator at yesterday's game between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. The attack resulted from a bombardment of pop bottles directed at Guthrie. The Atlantic jurisdiction consists of all -the states east of the Mississippi river. Man Shoots Women, Kills Self Over Jealousy (By Associated Press) SYRACUSE, N. Y., Aug. 9. At Oneida this morning, Frank Sager, of that place, shot and killed Miss Pearl Hook and seriously wounded her sister, Miss Bernice Hook- Sager then killed himsplf. The shooting is be lieved to have been actuated by jealousy. Sager was engaged to marry Miss Bernice Hook. . Circuit Court Harry Walls, living south of Richmond, on the Abington pike, was arranged before Judge Bond in Wayna circuit court, Tuesday on a charge of wife desertion filed by his wife, djila Walls. He pleaded not guilty and his bond was fixed at $1,000. Foreclosure of a real estate mortgage and judgment in favor of the plantiff for $245.72 was given by Judge Bond in Wayne circuit court, Tuesday in the action of Walter W. Housoworth vs. Sarah A. Cross demanding $325. MRS. MOSES RECOVERING. Continued recovery was shown by Mrs. Charles Moses, Tuesday, according to reports from Reid Memorial hospital. Mrs. Moses in company with other members of the family was taken ill at a picnic dinner at Glen Miller park Sunday.
