NATIONAL W. C.T.U. This rear's convention of the Nat
ional Woman's Christian Temperance Union, vhich will be held in San Francisco Aug. 18 to 23, marks a new era in the XV. C. T. U. It Is the first since prohibition went Into effect, last year's having been skipped, say local members. Tomorrow national officers and middle western delegates leave Chicago by special thain for the convention. Prohibition enforcement will be stressed this year. World prohibition prospects will be reviewed on a larger scale. Other lines of woman's betterment will be developed as never before, it is announced. Work Expands. The distinctive character of this, the forty-eighth annual convention the W. C. T. U. has held. ia. illustrated in the title of the keynote speech of its president. Miss Anna Gordon, of
Evanston. 111. It is "The Expanding Program of the New Crusade." The meeting will recall, older members of the W. C. T. U. say. that it was at San Francisco' where the idea of the world's XV. C. T. U. was born. "While visiting Chinatown 38 years ago Miss Frances E. Willard, founder of the V. C. T. U., was so impressed v.ith the sight of young Chinese girls brought there for immoral purposes, that she declared on the spot the mothers of the world must be organized to prevent that sort of thing. The World's W. C. T. U., which developed from her resolve of that moment, numbers a million members today and is organized in nearly -10 countries. Its next convention will - be held in Philadelphia a year from .this fall. "

NEW GARDEN TRUSTEE IS PRAISED FOR VOTE
WHITEWATER, lnd., Aug. 9. By an almost unanimous vote. Trustee Curtis, of Franklin township, was commended by the Franklin township farmers' association Monday night, for "truly representing the majority of the Franklin townsLIp farmers at the meeting of the board of education by voting for Mr. Dolan's reappointment." Four votes were registered against the resolution of commendation, one of the dissenters explaining that Wayne county should have two agents if it has any, as he had visited the office several times, each and found Mr. Dolan in the country each time. This man recommended a field agent and one for the office as well. There were about 80 present at the meeting. It was decided to pool towntbip orders for fertilizer.
The secretary was Instructed to
write headquarters and get a report on Mr.. Ohler's activities and the livestock department and the president was instructed to secure a speaker on livestock shipping for the next meeting. Sept. 12.

DAINTY WOMAN HOLDS BARNES LIONS AT BAY Almost any recognized actress could enact the title role of "Alice in Jungleland", the spectacle which opens the performance of the Al G. Barnes circus coming to Richmond on Friday, August 12, except for the one thing the story calls for Alice to awaken from a dream in the big steel arena containing a dozen Hons. That is why there never has been but one person to appear as Alice. Miss Martha Florine created the role, and has appeared in It every time that the spectacle' has been presented. Miss Florine is one of the most skill
ful of the feminine animal trainers of the country. She also is a clever pantomimist, and when Barnes selected "Alice in Jungleland" for the big feature of the 6how he realized that there
was only one woman for the principal part, and she was Martha Florine. It takes nerve to enter an arena with even one lion, but when a dozen of the jungle beasts are presented at one time and put through their paces by a slip of a girl who looks as if she should be in school there can be no doubting her courage. The story of "Alice in Jungleland revolves around the adventures of a little girl who goes to sleep after a strenuous period of play. During her nap she dreams that she is in Jungleland, and various episodes offered with startling realism make the spectacle one long to be remembered. "Alice in Jungleland" will be presented twice during the engagement of the Al. G. Barnes circus on Friday, August 12.
ceived in an automobile accident Funeral services will be held at the residence, at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, with Ray XV. H. Reynolds, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Craft was 22 years old, and a member of the Liberty order of Masons. He is the son of Sheriff Frank Craft, sheriff of Union county. Besides his parents, one brother, Leo, a farmer near Liberty, survives. EATON, O., Aug. 9. Following his death here Saturday night at his home here, funeral services for Robert Appleby, business man, were conducted this afternoon at his late home, the Rev. Thomas Murray. Universalist church, officiating. Burial - was in Mound Hill cemetery.
MURRAY A fistic battle that would make the far famed Donegal Fair appear like a strawberry festival was staged by Nor
man Dawn on boara a sea-guius schooner in Edith Roberts' latest Untversal photodrama, "Thunder Island," now playing at the Murray theatre. The scene is an attack by Mexican
pirates on the high seas, and the director used for nis grapplers a score of the hardest-boiled stevedores to be
found on the San Pedro docks. MURRETTE The secret is out! the secret which for six months had been jealously guarded by Louis B. Mayer in connection with the First National picture which was directed by John M. Stahl and which, until very recently, had no name. Everybody now knows that the name selected for this big picture, which is showing for a week at the Murrette . theatre, is "The Woman in His House.. But everyone does not know how this particular title happened to be chosen. On her arrival in New York from
the coast Mildred Harris, former wife
of the famous "Charlie" Chaplin, in
advertently let the cat out of the bag. In speaking of her domestic affairs, she happened to let fall the statement that she had proven with Charlie simply "the woman in his house." MURRAY VAUDEVILLE.' Jack Benny's personality shoots him across , with the local . vaudeville at-
tenaers. He doesn't anything particularly difficult neither does he make much effort to cinch his hold, yet he is the favorite. Calm and matter of fact, simple and plain, common and
unassuming, he conversationally drops one gag after another.- Once in awhile he plays a little tune on a violin.
One could imagine him saying: "It's so easy it's a shame to take the money." Helen Coline, assisted at the piano by Manny Smith, and backed by special settings, portrays a sketch, "Windows.". She sings m little for each character represented in her series, and wears a variety of costumes. Miss
Coline hardly has the voice one might j

One of the best numbers is the one in which the comedian jiggs on skates. A pleasing and fine exhibition of athletic prowess is seen in the act by The Wilsons. Both the young lady
and man prove remarkable muscle control. Tasteful settings lend an added touch of refinement to their offering. Edith Roberts in "Thunder Island." is the film feature. Marvin,
