CONTRACTORS EAGER TO OBTAIN WORK Oil DARKE COUNTY ROADS

GREENVILLE, Aug. 8. Much spiritid bidding was manifested at the letting of the contracts " for the construction of the Coleman walls, in Missinniwa Township, the Ross bridge In Liberty Township, and the Burkett and walls by the county commissioners last Saturday, and as a result the work 'was sold for about $1,200 less than the estimated cost. Seventeen bids in all were received for the work. The Coleman walls were awarded to A. C. Constable at his bid of $2,000, estimated cost. $2,879; the Ross bridge to C. R. Stickleman for $1,345, estimated cost, $1,693, and the Burkett end walls for $502, estimated at $756. Injured by Steam Mangle. While engaged in operating a steam mangier at the Home Steam Laundry on West Fourth Street, where she is employed. Miss Bulah Mills, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Mills, of Beamsville, met with a very serious and painful accident, Saturday morning. Miss Mills in some unaccountable manner, let her hand slip over the guard with which the machine is equipped .and it was .drawn into the mangier and badly crushed and burned. Miss Mills had presence of mind to draw back when her hand started in the machine, and thereby Faved her arm from being drawn in also. Her cries for help brought assistance, and the hand was extricated and medical attention summoned. It is not known at this time whether or not the hand will have to be amputated. No blame is placed on Mr. Newbaurer. owner of the laundry, as the machines are properly equipped with guards .and had been pronounced O. K. last Thursday by a state inspector. Allege Broken Contract. The Theatres j

, MURRAY Lower California, called Baja California in Spanish, is the tempestous scene of "Thunder Island," Edith Roberts' most recent Universal photodrama, now playing to capacity houses at the Murray theatre. The story was filmed under the direction of Norman Dawn, who produced "Lasca," "The Fire Cat" and other popular productions. "Thunder Island." is regarded as one of Miss Roberts' most romantic starring vehicles. - The action takes place on the peninsula of Lower California, between the Pacific and the Gulf of California. Spanish. Mexican and Indian characters make up the supporting cast. While the filming was in progress revolutionists over-ran the country in an effort to restore former Governor Estuban, Cantu to power and bullets whizzed around the actual location where the Universal company was at work. MURRETTE. Mildred Harris, dainty and charming, plays the role of a neglected wife in "The Woman in His House," which opened an engagement of four days at the Murrette Sunday. Opposite her is Ramsey Wallace, who has the part 0. the two busy and materialistic husband and physician. The theme of this photoplay deals with the triumph of mother love, and little Richard Hedrick has the part of the child who figures in the case. The picture is said to make a striking comparison between a wife and just "a woman in her husband's house." The story is an original one, the work of Irene Reels. John Stahl is the director. It was produced by Louis B. Mayer and i3 an Associated First National release.
