FORTY CHAUTAUQUA TENTS ARE ENGAGED Last year's Chautauqua campers are rapidly re-engaging their lots for the coming sessions, according to Walter Miller, ia charge of the Chautauqua headquqarters at the Y. M. C. A. Forty lots had been reserved up to noon Thursday, and 30 other applications had been received. Thi3 indicates that the reservations are being made at about the rate of other years. MUST TRIM HEDGES, NEAR ROAD CROSSINGS, LATEST STATE LAW In addition to the numerous other little duties imposed upon them township trustees now have the supervision of hedge or live fences which are set out along public highways. The last legislature gave trustees authority to order such fences cut. down or trimmed when it appears that they have become obstructions in the road. The change in the law was made to eliminate as many "blind' road intersections as possible anl thereby prevent automobile accidents. The statute provides "that all hedges or live fences along the lino of any highway shall be cut and trimmed down to a height of not to exceed five feet, once In each calendar year." Provide Clear View It is further provided "that in cases where such fences connect with - a highway intersection, or adjacent to any curve where view of the highway may be intercepted, or with any railway or interurban right-of-way, such hedges shall be trimmed and maintained at a height of not to exceed five feet above the level of the center of the traveled road bed in the high

Such altitude shall be maintained throughout the year for a distance of one hundred feet commencing at th intersection of the highway and continuing along the lines dividing such highways and the property adjoining and no other obstructions to the view except natural elevations of land shali be maintained at such points. The act further provides that it shall be the duty of township trustees, county road superintendents or state highway superintendents to examine all such hedges between Jan. 1 and April 1 of each year and if they find such fences which are more than five feet high they shall give the owner notice to trim, them to the required height The owner is also required to burn the trimmings and brush and remove them from the highway. Force Compliance. If the owner fails to comply with the order of the trustee or other officials within 10 days after receiving notice the officials are empowered to cause the hedges or live fences to be trimmed and all expenses incurred shall be assessed as a lien upon the lands the same a3 a road tax. Nothing in the act is to be construed to apply to buildings of a substantial character which are located at the intersections of public highways. . - A penalty is attached to officials who fail to perform their duties in regard to the carrying out of the act A fine of not more than $25 nor less than $5 shall be made against the offending officer or his subordinate, the act states.
