MiHMOND FALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM. RICHMOND. IND.. SATURDAY, JULY 30, 1921.

EFFORTS TO PARDON DEBS ARE PROTESTED j BY LEGION EXECUTIVE INDIANAPOLIS, July 30. Efforts to obtain pardon of Eugene V. Debs and other war-time offenders against tin United States drew the fire of John G. Emery, national commander of the American Legion, in a message sent to President Harding, promising a fight to a finish by the legion if clemency is granted, ssucn action. Mr. Emery declared, would be interpreted as license to disregard law and order. He assured the president that no action the administration could take would

draw the condemnation, of ex-service men more promptly or unitedly than

the pardon of Debs. Flood of ' Protects i Expected Mr. Emery's-message was prompted by press dispatches which said thd president had received Samuel Gompers and delegate from numerous organizations urging- pardons and that the matter would . receive early consideration. Legion officials, who have closely watched the developments of this case for months, decided that it was time to act. and hundreds of telegrams came from all parts of the country are expected to reach Washington con-

.veying the same warning from legion units. Alvin M. Owsley, acting director of the legion's Americanism commission, wrote to Attorney General Daughertdeclaring that the-names of Debs anl Bergdoll were linked together throughout the country and that the unanimous opinion of ex-service men calls for the retention of Debs in prison and the bringing of Bergdoll before the bar of justice. Mr. Owsley expects to go to Washington at the earli

est opportunity to discuss the matter' directly with government officials. ! Commander Emery's wire to the president said: "Public press of this day carries notice of appointments of organizations and persons with the president urging pardon and release of Eugene V. Debs and other war-time prisoners and further conveys reports to the American people that there is a possibility cf executive clemency being extended from your hands. "Blow to Law and Order" "With your permission, Mr. President, I have the honor to present the sentiments of the great mass of exservice men and women in solemn protest against the pardoning or paroling of Debs or any war-time prisoner now. "Surely no action on the part of the president would strike so near thu hearts of the ex-service men of . the

country and meet with so quick ana resolute condemnation and disap

proval as the release of Debs and hii

kind. At this time, when our hearts are still stirred with emotion in bit

ter indictment of Debs, his release

would do more to license a wholesale disregard of law and order than any one act the president might take. May I not have the honor to receive your assurance that no such action is contemplated or to be expected now?"

Winchester Police Hold

Two Suspected of Theft WINCHESTER, Ind.. July . SO.

Chief of Police Fletcher Thursday ar-i rested Dan L. Ulrich and Cliff McNutt, on suspicion. The two men drove up

to the Hickman and Rupe poultry house in a Ford touring car, they having with them 50 young chickens, forty Rhode Island Reds and two Plymouth Rocks. They sold the chickens and were paid by check. This being the third time these men had sold chickens to Hickman and Rupe, suspicions were aroused and the chief of police went to the bank on which the check had been given, and there he found Ulrich as he was having the check cashed. Mr. Fletcher arrested him also McNutt, who was waiting on the outside in the machine. Both men claimed

that they lived near Saratoga and had raised the chickens. When interrogated they did not 6eem to know any one around Saratoga and it is thought they reside in Portland. They are being held in custody.
