SEPARATE LEADERS IN LEAGUE CONTEST (By Associated Press) " ' NEW YORK, July 23 By winning their third straight game from- the Pirates yesterday the Giants edged a little closer to the National league leadership, only eight points separating the two clubs. The battles for first position in both leagues are not only close but very similar la figures. Pittsburgs, the national circuit lead-, ers, and Cleveland, on top ' in the American league, each have , won sixty games and lost 34 with a per- , centage of .633. The Yankees in second place in the American and the Giants in the same berth in the National league have lost the same number of games 31 but 'McGraw's team has won one more game than the Yanks. The National team's victories number 58 while the American club has won 57. Both the Yankees and - the Cleveland team won . from their respective opponents yesterday. Manager Tris Speaker, centerfielder, may be lost tothe Cleveland team for several days due to a fracture of a small bone in his ankle, suffered while turning first base in Boston yesterday. . - The hard hitting Harry Heilman of the Detroit Tigers, leading swatter in Ban Johnson's league, added two more homers to his 1921 string" yesterday, his total to date being-fourteen. Other "take " four"-hits were made by Dykes, Athletics;- Shanks and Milan, Washington, and Sargent, Detroit. - - BICYCLE RACE WON BY WILLIAM GRAEF William Graef, traveling- the dis- -tance of 10 miles in 32 minutes and 33 seconds won the 10 mile bicycle race staged by the Richmond bicycle dealers Thursday afternoon. Graef was given a handicap of two and one half minutes which enabled him to capture first place. The best time for the race was set by Kenneth Parker, who covered the distance in 30 minutes, and. 42 seconds. Parker received the first prize for making the best time," which was a gold watch. Parker's time for the 10 miles almost averages 20 miles per hour. The other place winners were as follows Mora Parker, third; Robert Rethmeyer, fourth; Gail Hurst, fifth; Lourie Brown, sixth; Earl Parrish, seventh; A. Ross, eighth; L. ,W.Brick, ninth; D. Cartwright, tenth. The race was exciting from the . start to finish, all the racers trying hard to win.
