EXPECT NEGOTIATIONS WITH JAPAN TO ENTER MORE ACTIVE PHASE WASHINGTON, July 21. Negotiations with Japan relating to the scope of the disarmament conference apparently are about to enter a more active phase after several days of deliberation. Both the state department and Japanese embassy here have about com
pleted their surveys of the situation preliminary to the next step In the negotiations, and another conference between Secretary Hughes and Ambassador Sbldebara is considered likely to take place within a few days. It is understood to be the intention thus to keep the exchange of opinions informal for the present unless a more formal correspondence Is desired by Tokio. See No Delay In the view of American officials the negotiations are not likely to be of sufficient duration to interfere with the plan for bringing the conference together here by early November. The state department manifestly continues confident that the Tokio government will agree to the proposed broad discussion of far Eastern questions in the conference as soon as the American views are fully understood by Japanese statesmen, although it was said late today that no additional informs, tion of an official character had reached the department from the Japanese capital. Hughes Sees Harding The Japanese ambassador here, however, is understood to be fully advised of the attitude of his government. On the side of the United
States. Secretary Hughes has consult
ed with many high officials on the subject of the pending negotiations, and late this afternoon had an extended
conference with President Harding, at which it is understood the position of
the United States was canvassed in some detail.

MURRETTE It is seldom that an actor has the distinction of having bis name in electric signs on two of New York's uptown theatres at the same time. Lionel Barrymore recently had the distinction of competing with himself for pat

Barrymore is the star of that production, and immediately after it was concluded he opened a short season in a Broadway house in "Macbeth." New York liked him, so when the motion picture production was completed and became the attraction at the Strand, strollers on Broadway had the unique experience of seeing electric lights in front of the Strand announcing Lionel Barrymore and only a short distance away another big electric ' sign announcing the same actor. Chicks in Warm Weather
Proper Care and Management of Growing Chicks Important in Summer. The care of growing chicks, especially during warm weather, is most important, say specialists of the United States department of agriculture. Every boy or girl member of a poultry club should give them the best of attention if
success is to be had. The baby chicks may be smart little fellows from strong, vigorous parent stock, and they may have been brooded carefully for the first two or three weeks, but unless they receive proper care and management during their later growing period they will not develop properly, and many of them will be lost through disease or sickness. The chief essentials to proper growth are good coops or houses, cleanliness, prop-! er feed and water, 6hade, and free range. Every coop and poultry house used for growing chicks should be kept clean at all times. Sickness or disease starts usually in unclean quarters, and in such places lice and mites are always more plentiful. Coops and houses should be cleaned and sprayed once a week, and clean shavings, chaff, or sand put on the floor. Examine the chicks and houses often for lice and mites, and if found they should be got rid of at once by following the directions in Department Circular 16, "Lice, Mites and Cleanliness," which may be had, free upon application to the division of publications. United States Department of Agriculture. A variety of feeds, .with fresh, clean water, is necessary if chickens are to grow properly. Perhaps the three most necessary for rapid growth are grain feed, green feed and dry mash. Poultry specialists of the department say that in addition to the green feed and dry mash, which should be provided regularly, a grain mixture should be fed night and morning, giving as
large a quantity as the chicks willj eat clean, but no more. A good! grain mixture for growing chicks consists of three parts of cracked corn, two parts wheat and two parts of hulled oats. When available, kafir or rolled or hulled barley may be substituted for hulled oats. In localities where hulled oats, kafir or rolled barley can not be obtained, or is too expensive, a mixture of cracked corn and wheat only may be fed until the chicks are old enough to eat whole oats, when two part3 oats may be added to the corn and wheat mixture. A reasonable supply of fresh green feed Is almost as necessary as grain for growing chicks. If allowed liberty they will get much of it for themselves, but if confined, or if in quarters where green feed is not abundant, it should be sup
plied regularly. Lawn grass, beet tops, cabbage and lettuce are excellent feed3. When chicks are confined to brood coops with runs, they should be placed on ground where the grass is green and tender, and as fast as it is eaten off, the coop and run should be moved to a place where the grass is plentiful. In addition to green feeds and grain, dry mash should be kept before growing chicks at all times after they are three or four weeks old. . It is best to feed it in a hopper inside the building, or where it will not be exposed to rain or wet. Here is a good dry mash mixture:
Two pounds of corn meal, two
pound3 middlings, 1 pound oatmeal, two pounds wheat bran, one pound beef Bcrap, and one-fourth, pound
charcoal. Grit and oyster shell al
so should be provided.

TIMELY HINTS
Your rose bushes will bloom bet
ter if the dead flowers are cut off, besides presenting a neater appearance. Crab grass Is raising Its head In spots on many lawns. Keep it cut close with the lawn mower and prevent it from seeding. The smoke pipe of your furnace will last much longer if it is taken down now, cleaned out and stored in a dry place. One summer's disuse is harder on it than several winter's use, unless it Is thus cared for.
Now is a good time to buy or make a reel or rack for holding
the lawn hose. Rubber hose is ex
pensive nowadays and it will pay to take care of it. Coil it up in the
shade, at least, and drain the water
out.
Now Is the time to cut back the
long, new canes of the black rasp
berries, to induce them to send out
numerous side shoots for next
year's fruiting.
Prevention Is better than cure in
the poultry business as in any other department of life. Filth, dampness,
improper ventilation, improper feeding, and introducing infected birds into the yard are common causes of disease. Clean the dropping boards daily, then sprinkle them with road dust, coal ashes, or land-plaster to absorb the liquid excrement. New straw should be put into the nests every two or three weeks or oftener, especially if it becomes damp or dirty. Whitewash the quarters once a year at least, late in summer or early in the fall. News for kiddies: Richmond is to have a real animal circus Friday, Aug. 5th.
Stored Potatoes Need Air
To Check Sweating in Bin It is a bad practice to store potatoes in large bins or piles, the United States Department of Agriculture advises. Not infrequently potatoes are piled to a depth of 10 to 15 feet, the pile being correspondingly large in the other two dimensions. When stored in this manner they are almost certain to go through a rather violent sweating or curing process, during the course of which the tubers in the central portion of the pile are frequently subjected to a dangerously high temperature. This is especially true if the tubers are slightly immature, or were not dry and free from moist soil when gathered, or if stored when the outside temperature is high, making it difficult to lower the inside temperature of the house. Overheating from all of the causes mentioned may be avoided by making some provision for aerating the pile. Keep a Few Chickens It is known as a matter of experience and observation that town and city people who have to figure costs of food closely have not been accustomed to use eggs freely except in the season of flush production and low prices. Many such families can keep a few hens in the back yard and even with low production get many more eggs than they have been accustomed to use.
