PERSHING POURS OIL OVER' RELATIONS OF STAFF AND CONGRESS
WASHINGTON, July 15. General Pershing took measures Thursday to establish better relations between the army general staff, of which he Is head, and congress. Accompanied by his executive assistant. Major General Harbord, he called unannounced on the military committees of both houses, exchanging-pledges of co-oper
ation with chairmen and members in an effort to make the army worthy of
the nation. . Incidentally, It was said by committeemen, the general broke a precedent, for he was declared to be the first chief of staff to have thus called informally on the committees since the staff came into being. Hints of friction between the committees and the staff have been frequent for years. Apparently it was with knowledge of this situation in mind that General Pershing set out today on his calls. He was greeted cordially and brief addresses were made on both sides during, his visits. Senator Wadsworth, New York, and Representative, Kahn, California, the commitee chairmen, replying. "Latchstring" Always Out. "We regard the military committees as very Important parts of the military establishment of the United States,' said Gen. Pershing to the sen ate commitee. "We are asking that you give- us the advantage of your experience and knowledge of military affairs and we shall do likewise. We shall endeavor to carry out your will as expressed by law and hope for most friendly relations." The general added that the "latchstring" of general staff headquarters always was out for committeemen.

, MURRETTE. Torn Moore has a role after his own heart, in "Officer 666," which opens at the Murrette theatre Friday. The fame of the play has echoed to the four corners of the continent. Fans everywhere know it as the farce that shook Broadway with gales of laughter and made a whirlwind success on tho road. Here it is as a photoplay, with the sunny Tom Mooro in thn star part, ami a cast of comedians tbat could not be excelled. In the screen version, the sharp corners of the play have been rounded off, scenes have been inserted that could not be shown on the stage, and the action zips along without the slightest hint of a break. WASHINGTON. Many scenes from Charles Ray's latest picture on "small-town" life.
"An Old-Fashioned Boy." which is the feature Paramount attraction at the Washington theatre, are laid around an attractive bungalow, which was especially constructed for scenes in the picture. Built on one of the
choicest of elevated sites in Holly
wood, California, the location so Impressed Mr. Ray that after scenes had been taken in and around the bungalow, he expressed' his desire to purchase the land After much persuasion, Thomas H. Ince, who held a lease on the land, agreed to forfeit his hold on It to Mr. Ray. What Ray intends to do with the land is a mystery. Some say he proposes to erect a home on it. "An Old-Fashioned Boy" affords a typical country boy's role for Mr. Ray, while tho situations are highly interesting. There are many laugtu throughout the action. Ethel Shannon, a young screen debutante of charm, beauty and talent, plays opposite the star and heads one of the best supporting companies ever assembled for Mr. Ray. The story was written
by Agnes Christine Johnston and tho
picture was directed by Jerome Storm. MURRAY "The Branding Iron" is being shown
at the Muraay the last half. A prominent cast presents the production, based on one of the most widely discussed novels of the year. Barbara Ca'stleton contributes to "The Branding Iron" a remarkably intelligent performance. It Is perhaps the most difficult role that has been seen in motion pictures in years, but Miss Castleton more than measured up to its qualifications. James Kirkwood, one of the best

known leading men in pictures, plays Pierre Landis, the handsome, primitive rancher who loved Joan Carver with a love that was purified in the crucible of insane passion. He is the book character come to life strong, rugged, repressed, with the brooding silence and deep gaze of the man who has lived alone in vast spaces all his life. Other prominent names in the supporting cast ire Russell Simpson, Richard Tucker, Sydney Ainsworth and Albert Roscoe. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE For elaborateness. Keno, Fables,
Wagner & Company in "Toy Fantasies," takes the lead. But for producing the "goods," (the kind which the crowd marches to the box office to see), the Riverside Trio heads the bill. "Toy Fantasies," Is a unique offering. It is a cross between an effort at comics and a burlesque of a Christmas toy shop window. The young lady of the act wearns a noticeably
handsome costume in the last half of the act. Antics of the Cat and Seal feature the entertainment. A "chink," a colored janitor, and a straight compose the Riverside Trio. Opening with a brave but small attempt at producing a skit, the trio soon allow themselves opportunity to exhibit their vocal possibilities. And at that they excel. Several popular numbers are rendered in solo and group form. At first, Beatty and Evelyn do not carry their audience. Then slowly the mood in which the skit is produced finds response. The result is a call for more. Steps by the couple in the latter part of the act go big. Jigging on roller skates is the best of that offered by Melroy and Mc-
Neese. The team give a refined per
formance, graceful and pleasing.
"The Branding Iron," featuring James Kirkwood, is the film.
