WAYNE GHINGH BUGS FLYING; HOPE RAINS WILL DESTROY PESTS

The Wayne county chinch bugs, as many as have survived the campaigns of the farmers, are firmly entrenched in the corn fields now, and farmers are generally awaiting the advent of the second brood, hoping that it will not be too numerous or that wet weather may discourage it and push the corn ahead of possible ravages by the insecu. The bugs have been flying for several days now, and at this time practically all have matured. The earliest to

mature began flying about two weeks j pgo. It is impossible to fight them j after they begin to fly except by spray-1 ins, and it is impracticable to spray a whole 40 acre field, which would have to be done to eliminate them after a field has become thoroughly infested. Some fanners have been spraying corn for the first infestation, however, using the kerosene emulsion, or black leaf 40 sprays. Successful In Fight, Greatest success in combating the chinch bugs was found when they were in the immature stage, and were crawling from one field to another in Fearch of more food. At that time furrows were plowed and post hole traps dug along them, by which means many were killed. Some holes caught enough bugs to fill a quart measure in the course of a few hours. Other nearby counties, which at first thought themselves free from the infestation, have discovered the presence of the pest, but somewhat later than Wayne county farmers. Fayette county has reported every farm in the three northern townships infested, with many more in the next three townships to the south. Henry county also has the bugs in practically all parts of the county, while Randolph county has suffered, if anything, more severely than Wayne. Delaware, and Jay counties also had 6evere infestations. Preble county in Ohio had many chinch bugs in the northwestern corner, around New Paris and north, while south of Wayne in Union county the Philomath neighborhood had large numbers. Farmers now are praying for a wet reason which will kill many of the bugs, and all who have had losses this

year, are intending to burn out fence

rows and other harboring places this

winter, in order to forestall another

such disaster next year.

ALLEGE EXCESSIVE

ROAD CONTRACT PRICE

INDIANAPOLIS.- Ind.. July 15. Excessive cost in the construction of the L. J. Gross road in Laporte county and delay in completing three roads in Bartholomew county are alleged in special reports on the highways filed Thursday with Jesse E. Eschbach. chief examiner of the state board of accounts, by A. L. Donaldson, engineer and field examiner of the board. The contract price of the Gross road, which is $117,525, is $46,910 more than the road should cost, according to the report. Mr. Donaldson, after an investigation, estimated that a liberal price for the construction of the road is $70,598.90. The bond issue for the

road was approved by the state board I

of tax commissioners.
