"The Love Pendulum" By MARION RUBINCAM
Chapter 2 A VISITOR. But once started on the road to recovery, I soon gained strength and sooner than that, a clear head. That very day I remembered the
owner of the voice my own aunt. It j
began to come clearly then I remembered how ill I was, I remembered that Ieople talked of influenza, I remembered trying to go to a dance, or some Hilly party, with hot head and dry throat, and the collapse at the very door of my aunt'3 house. Little things began coming back to me, very slowly, as though I were waking up from a hundred year long sleep. But the things I remembered seemed too impersonal, almost as though they had happened to someone else and not to me. The next clear thing was the opening of the white door opposite my bed, and the entrance of the chubbiest, pinkest, sweetest face I remembered ever seeing. She wore the starched white dress of the hospital attendants evidently she was my nurse. For one day I felt her rather than saw her I merely knew that whenever she came near me I felt stronger and better. In a few days I asked her suddenly for a mirror. "That shows you're well," she said, smiling at me as she stood by my bed. She had a little mouth, a deep pink line in her round pink face, and when
she smiled she showed ever so many little teeth. Iler voice was a delight
it had just enough Irish brogue to give it richness and character. "I'll tell the doctor you're wanting now to powder your pretty nose. They
all want to when they begin to get
well.
"I don't want to powder my nose." I said fretfully. "I never use powder.
I hate "
"Of course. No one with a skin like yours needs powder now. But the mirror we'll wait till the doctor pays his morning call." "There's a mirror on the dresser
looked haggard and I didn't want to see them. My lips did not seem to have much color-j-and for the rest, a lace ruffle of the cap came to my eyebrows, and a knot of blue ribbon at one side only added to this curious
color combination that was I.
"Take the cap off! I know what's
happened," I ordered.
The nurse pulled it back a little
and I saw myself as I had never
dreamed before. My entire head had been shaved, all my thick, lovely goldca hair had disappeared. My scalp was covered with a fine, yellowish
fuzz. "Sure now, it was a crime, but we
always have to do it after a high fever.
It 11 be in in no time," the nurse said consolingly. I tried to laugh a weak hysterical attempt. "Don't I look funny?" I asked. "Like a chicken before it gets fluffy " The talk ended because the doctor came in. My hair did grow rapidly. The nurse gave it great care, as she gave me great care. In two weeks I could look at myself without the lace cap on. It began to be interesting watching the new hair grow. "She looks like a sweet little boy.

doctor. Strength came slowly. I had had pneumonia, a very bad case of it, and the terrible depression that goes with convalescence was always with me. "Where am I?" I asked my nurse
once. "In Dr. Engel's sanatarium.' "How did I get here?" "Sure, your grand rich aunt from New York hired a private train and brought you all the way up here herself." "She stayed awhile, but she went home," I announced, remembering the voice I had overheard. "She's that busy, she says, she couldn't stay once you were out of danger. She had some parties to go to 1 " the nurse's voice held all the disrespect in the world, though her words were mild enough; "How far am I from New York?"
"Well now,i I don't just know. I been there, once, when I came over from Ireland. That was long since, and it took days to get here " "Days!" "Oh sure, it's only hours now, about five or six of them. This is Wellsville, it's near the middle of New York State. It's a pretty place you'll be about to see it soon." There was a tap at the door. A gentle little lady entered, carrying a great armful of apple blossoms in her arms. "Is Miss Bennett better?" she asked. Tomorrow Reminiscence.

"Now you're dreaming like you've been doing for some weeks, miss." But I knew there was a mirror my own mirror of mottled tortoise frhell, I eouM sop. it from the bed. The tiny refusal irritated me. I felt suspicious of everything. But the nurse was gone and I had not strength to raise my arm, much loss get up raid get the mirror. Then the nurse came back, and slipped a cap over my head one I recognized as having been mine before. Thon she brought the mirror and held it for me to see. All I could find out was that my skin was a dead white the most curious white I had ever seen, white with blue in it. My eyes were blue, too; they
Heart Problems
Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a married woman and have been married three years. My husband is rather mean. He slapped me on Mothers' day some remembrance. Since then I cannot like him as I sued to. There are times I just can't stand
him near me. I do not love him and !
never did. When I need any clothes I have to go out and work for them and watch and save every cent I want. He doesn't take me out as he used to. He is dirty about himself docs not wash his teeth, change his clothes, unless I put them right under his nose, never takes a bath unless he really has to and then I got everything ready and nag and fight him. What would you do in my case? R. T. W. I am afraid I should want my freedom from a man who is not clean about his person. What I blame you

PROPER HAIR TONICS Pilocarpine Hydrochlorate ..2 grains Precipitated sulphur 30 grains Creosol (Lilly) 30 drops Castor oil 10 drops Alcohol (959r) 4 ounces Tr. cantharides 4 drams Farina cologne 4 drams Rose water, to make 8 ounces This is the best hair tonic that I personally, know anything about. It contains Pilocarpine, a drug which has been found to act directly upon the color cells of the hair. For this reason the formula is particularly val
uable for cases of premature greyness because of illness or worry, or for women whose hair is turning grey naturally but who wish to put off the process as long as possible. It is a good thing to use even when there is no tendency to greyness because, by its stimulation, it will make the hair a richer shade and should put off for many years the day when grey hair wiil appear. Unfortunately, Pilocarpine is sometimes hard to obtain. But even without it this is a valuable hair tonic since it contains castor' oil, which nourishes the scalp, and sulphur which fights dandruff, cantharides which stimulates the growth of hair, and creosol (Lilly) which is an antiseptic.

sort even when the hair is healthy because it acts as a sort of insurance against any illness which might hurt the hair, and against old age and falling hair. Rubbing the scalp with oil the night before you shampoo it may be the only tonic you need. Massaging the scalp every few days as a gentle stimulation is in itself a tonic. One very good thing for dark hair is to rub the scalp occasionally with tar water, which is nothing more than a tablespoonful of tar purchased at a
drug store, poured into a pint bottle
which is filled up with warm water.
The tar does not dissolve, but some of it gets into the water and it makes dark hair very soft and pretty. P. L. C. Never use cocoa butter on the face, as you say that you have a tendency to grow hair. This is excellent for other parts of the body as It is very nourishing. Massage it into
skin as you do with a cream until the skin takes up as much as it needs.

WAR AGAINST GREEKS
fBy Associated Press) ANGORA. Turkey, July 13. A Turkish Joan of Arc. Aishe Hanum, has
started a woman's fighting brigade against the Greeks. Her organization, called the Kain brigade, has already taken part in active fighting and she is constantly enrolling new recruits. This is the .first time in Turkish history that a woman has been so milltantly active. She has been dubbed by the people of Anatolia, "The Conqueror." Her personality is in distinct contrast to the beautiful Halide Edib Hanum, the writer and graduate of the American Constantinople college, who has been so active in Nationalist politics for two years and fled to the interior in March, 1920, to escape imprisonment by the allies. Aishe Hanum is a stern, dark woman of the soil, aged 52, who sees visions and believes she is inspired by the Prophet. She wears a veil but has cast aside skirts. She carries a rifle and when not at the front goes through the villages accompanied by her 15-year old son, urging the peasants to contribute food and money and their able-bodied women to cast out the enemy stranger from the homeland.
IGNORANCE IS BLAMED
FOR HIGH DEATH RATE CB Associated Press) WASHINGTON, July 13T-The heavy death rate in maternity and infancy
cases is due largely to ignorance and poverty. Representative Towner, Republican, Iowa, told the house interstate commerce committee Tuesday in urging speedy action on the "better
babies bill." As joint author of the measure, which passed the senate last session, Mr. Towner declared that much opposition to it, was due to the belief that it sought to establish fed
eral control over the homes. Dr. Joseph Baker, of the New York board of health, declared that instruction work among mothers in New York showed that the high maternity death rate could be cut down. There was no reason, she added, for permiting "criminal mortality to continue when it could be prevented," as proposed by the bill.

PERSHING RISES EARLY TO ENJOY POLO GAME
fBy Associated Press) WASHINGTON. July 13. General Pershing refuses to permit the work of chief of staff of the army to occupy him entirely, and has decided after two weeks on the new job that time for play and exercise is essential for a man occupying a desk and swivel chair. He has adopted a policy of mixed play and work in order to keep himself physically fit. His play begins early in the day, long before the doors of the war department are open for business and has taken the form recently of polo playing in practice with the army team. He may be seen on the grounds in Potomac park soon after sun-up most any morning, riding his pony as hard and swinging his mallet as vigorously as any of the other players, dispite his 61 years.
