The 1921 Chautauqua The program for the chautauqua this year leaves nothing to be desired both as to quality and quantity, and patrons of that popular form of recreation and instruction will not be disappointed over the offerings. This form of entertainment has taken a firm hold not only on the residents of Richmond but also on the residents of the neighboring towns who annually conduct chautauquas. Large, audiences hear the speakers and singers, giving their approval year after year by patronizing the venture. The chautauqua has become an institution of American life. It attracts men, women and children, who find a never ceasing amount of pleasure in listening to the programs. The popularity of the chautauqua is to be seen in another feature. Prominent men are glad to appear on the circuits. True, they are paid well for their effort, but if the chautauqua did not serve a good purpose, noted men would not care to be identified with it. The Richmond chautauqua has performed a good service in this community for many years, offering wholesome amusement and good instruction to its patrons. This year's program is no exception, and the patronage undoubtedly will respond to the offering.

Good E looa livening By ROY K. MOULTON OUR OWN LITTLE SCHOOLHOUSE Where do most of the peanuts come from? The circus. How many divorce cases on the "first page last year? - How many microbes on a one-dollar bill? How many yard3 does it take to make a shirt? , ; Less than that. If all the phonograph records were ; placed in a pile what would happen? They would topple over. What would happen to a man who jumped from the Woolworth tower at 10 o'clock Friday morning. He would be all smashed up. How can you make a coat last? ' Make the pants first. What Is psychoanalysis? ! Presumably. Where do our currants come from? The power house. How long will peace last? As long as a piece of string. Time Out! He wandered about the grounds, viewing his new surroundings with much interest. Finally he approached one of the guards. "What time is it?" he asked. The guard glanced up at the clock on top of the main building. "Eleven-thirty," he said. "But that clock can't be right," observed the inquirer. "Certainly it is," said the guard. The man walked on soon he met another guard. "Say, would you mind telling me the time?" he asked. "Sure," said the guard, looking up at the same clock. "It's just past eleven-thirty." "But that clock isn't right, is it?" pursued the man who wanted to know. "Why, sure it is," said the guard. The guest scratched his head reflectively. "Well, if it's right what's it doing here?" he demanded. Would You Call This a Horse Laugh? Last night as the curtain went up on the opening chorus, Lorraine, after giving the prima donna the once over, shied this one at me: "Does she wear those riding togs no the audience can distinguish her from the 'ponies'?" "Neigh, neigh," I replied, "it's only i habit she's gotten into lately." Tom Weatherly. Correct English Don't Say: Ho lives AT Boston. He Vas educated IN Harvard. light plant was a wise one, irrespective of the! fact that the suggestion, even if it had been accepted, would have been contrary to law. The plant now is in the best physical condition in which it has been for many years. Long delayed repairs and replacements are being made and the installation of new machinery will enable the plant to give continuous service. As has been pointed out repeatedly, the condition of the plant became deplorable because repairs had not been made in years past, and its finances became impaired because the rates had not been raised soon enough. These weaknesses in its management have been remedied. Constant heckling and efforts to obstruct the progress of the plant are neither encouraged nor commended by the citizens, who are tired of hearing charges that are not based on facts; If some of the critics of the plant, instead of trying to find fault for the mere purpose of
creating unrest and dissatisfaction, would turn their minds to real constructive efforts the city would be much better off. The last report of the engineer of the Indiana public service commission is indicative of the improvements that have been made in the plant and its finances. If bad conditions have been improved, and the plant is giving good service, the reasonable and sensible thing to do is to be glad of the change. Mere malicious, destructive criticism whose only aim is to make trouble and to embarrass the city serves no good end. It neither improves conditions in the plant nor redounds to the welfare of the taxpayers who own the plant. What would be gained by transferring management of the utility into the hands of a nonpolitical commission? Reduction in rates cannot be accomplished ; repairs will not be rushed faster than they are now; new machinery cannot be installed faster. If the city council and the board of works want to confer a favor on the citizens, let them work harmoniously instead of seeking to foment disturbances and trouble.

The brawny corporal who stood beside the! stretcher gave her a grim laugh and said: 'Well, lady, he ain't, no officer, but he's been hit twice in the innards, both legs busted, he's got two bullets in both arms, and we dropped him three times withdut his lettin' outa squeak, so I guess ye can call him a man.' TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can", "Take It", "Up" LEARN EASE The flutterer doesn't get very far. Those who accomplish the most, do it in the easiest manner. I have always been amazed at the simplicity back of the actions of great men with whocn I have come in contact. And yet that very thing Is the essential of greatness! Learn ease and carry it Into everything you do, as well as Into all that you think and act. The good motor driver shifts his. gears without grating them. There is power in smoothness. The quiet talker is always the most impressive. The soft tones of an orchestra are what simmer into the heart. Loudness and bungling always irritate. Noise is a destructive force. Cicero's idea of quitting life was "as I would an inn!" No bluster, no excitement just quietly, softly treading the laneway. Wendell Phillips was one of the most effective orators that America ever produced, and yet my father once told me that he stepped so unpretentiously upon the stage and went to talking in so quiet manner that the listener's first question seemed to be: "Is this the great Wendell Phillips that I have been told so much about?" But as the orator spoke on, his audience, as one man, seemed to be sitting forward in their seats, reluctant to lose a single word or inflection of voice. Learn ease! You will go so much faster and get so much further. The pushing crowd is the slow moving crowd. Slow up. Take your time. Think more and talk less. Then you will have more to say. Most things turn out all right in the end if you leave them to their natural way.
Rippling Rhymes By WALT MASON POPULARITY I have a lot of ardent friends who gTeet me every day, and genuine affection lends mucn warmth to things they say. They meet me on the beaten track whenever I go out, and clap me gayly on the back, and call me Good Old Scout. For I have never made a race for office, large or small; I've never promised, with my face, to make the taxes fall; I've never cried that I would save the voters' picayunes, or volunteered to fill a grave to save our Precious Boons. I've never pledged myself to ease the burdens that men bear, or handed out the cheesy wheeze where statesmen paw the air. I sit beneath my tree and vine and pen my rigmaroles; I've never asked a friend of mine to help me at the polls. -So there is nothing that abates the love men have for me; for they are tired of candidates and talk of Liberty. Our Sacred Bulwarks sometimes seem a topic rather vain, and men require some other theme to keep them safe and sane. And when they see me lead my goat along the village street, they know I will not ask a vote from any gent I meet. "It is a comfort," people cry, "that there's one man in town who never has the wish to try to hold an office down." They look on me with loving lamps, with lamps that shine like stars, and borrow two-cent postage stamps, and touch me for cigars. Memories of Old Days In This Paper Ten Years Ago Today The directors of the chautauqua at a meeting held in the Commercial club rooms, authorized the expenditure of $3,100 for the program for the assembly to be held in August and September. The amount was considered sufficient to secure talent that would be equal to that of any that had appeared here. One tradition has it that Mohammed drew up the Koran with the aid of a Persian Jew and a Nestorian monk. I am sending you a picture of a baby who suffered dreadfully from a baby rash and I used Sykes Comfort Powder with great success after everything else had failed to heal it." Mrs. C. K. The reason Sykes Comfort Powder is so successful in healing and preventing chafing, scalding, rashes and skin irritations is because it contains six healing, antiseptic ingredients not found in ordinary talcums.
