GIL MEN'S LANGUAGE IS NOT UNDERSTOOD OUTSIDE OF FIELDS
(By Associated a ress) TULSA. Okla., July 2. Oil men
have a language all their own, as It were, for the oil Industry, like others.
has a number of more or less techni
cal terms and phrases connected with
it that are not generally understood
outside the oil field districts. For Instance, "shooting a well" has an entirely different meaning from that applied in river navigation to the term "shooting the rapids." In the oil country the phrase means the lowering into the well of several dozen quarts of nitroglycerine and allowing it to explode in the bottom of the well in the oil sand.
Oil wells are drilled much like artesian water wells. A "rig" or tall pyramid framework, is erected over the spot where the well is to be drilled. 'At various stages during the sinking of the well it is cased in by steel pipe, the joints of which are screwed together, making a continuous pipe. This serves to keep out water and to keep the well from caving. Casing Size Reduced As the well is bored deeper, the
size of the casing is reduced in order to keep putting it down inside of that already in place. Two or three changes, or possibly four, are all that are usually made in reducing the size of the casing.N If no oil is found the well is termed a "dry hole." If gas .i3 found, it is a "gasser." A producing well is named according to the number of barrels of oil it produces in 24 hours, as a - 50-barrel or a 500-barrel well. Oil as it comes from the ground Is called "crude oil." It is carried to the refining plants in pipe lines, iron pipes ranging all the way from S to 10 or 12 Inches in diameter, or in railway tank cars. There it goes through the refining process. Pay Royalties Almost all oil men lease the land on which they drill, paying "royalties," from one-eighth to one-sixteenth of the value of the oil produced going to the owner of the land. A "location" is a piece of land on which a well is drilled. It varies from 300 to 500 feet square. Thus in a field that is closely drilled, each well will have wells on four sides of it between 300 and 500 feet away. These wells are known as "offsets." A "tank farm" is a tract of land on
which are located a number of large
storage tanks for oil.
"Test wells" are the first wells
drilled in a territory where oil has not
been discovered. "Wild cat" wells are those drilled in territory where geologists have not found rock formations that indicate the presence of oil. A "pool" is an under-ground supply of oil. or oil sand saturated with oil. ! The "Mid-Continent" field comprises the states of Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missiouri, Montana and New Mexico.

ALABAMA VETERANS
DISQUALIFIED VOTERS (By Associated Pross) MOBILE, Ala., July 2 Approximate
ly twenty thousand ex-service men in
Alabama, it was estimated today, are
disqualified from voting and rendered ineligible to hold positions under state, county and municipal government by a decision of the supreme court at Montgomery. The court held yesterday that the voters of Alabama never legally ratified the constitutional amendment exempting soldiers and sailors of the world war from payment of poll tax
if they served four months or more. It is estimated that at least twenty thousand veterans failed to pay their poll tax in the belief that they were exempt under the constitution. Scores of men appointed or elected to office throughout the state are believed in danger of being counted through this technicality.

The Home Garden
The common pests in Indiana that tend to destroy roses, bath flowers
and leaves, are leaf eating insects, plant lice and scale. The following is recommended by Purdue University entomologist for their control: The rose slug is readily controlled by arsenate of lead at the rate of one-half ounce of powder, or about eight level teaspoonsful (twice as much if paste form is used) to a gallon of water and if ahpids are present add a teaspoonful of 40 per cent nico
tine sulphate. If slugs only are present the arsenate of lead my be applied! as a powder, either pure or mixed with equal parts of airslaked lime or dry I flour as a carrier. If aphids and young letfhoppers only are present spray with a 40 per tent nicotine sulphate, one teaspoonful to a gallon of water in which is dissolved an ounce of soap. Applications should be thorough, a forcible misty spray applied, and care taken to reach the undersides of the leaves. Scale insects when present occur on canes and give them a scurfy appearance. During the winter months the heavily infested branches should be cut and burned and the remaining canes thoroughly sprayed, just before the buds open in spring, with lime sulphur, one gallon of liquid concentrate to eight of water.
Coal Mine Fatalities in Year Total 805 WASHINGTON, July 2 Coal mine fatalities during the first five months of this year, totaled 805, a rate of 4.01 to each million tons of coal mined, according to reports received by the bureau of mines. While the figures represented a decrease of SS fatalities as compared with the corresponding period of last year, the rate was greater due to a falling off in coal production of forty four million tons. During May, the reports state, 158 men were killed as compared with 163 in the same month last year.
