PLYMOUTH ROCK HEN AT PURDUE LAYS 1 51 EGGS IN 164 DAYS

LAFAYETTE. Ind., July 1. One hundred and fifty-one eggs in 164 days and still going! This is the remarkable achievement of Lady Purdue, a pedigreed Barred Plymouth Rock hen in the Purdue University poultry flock, who included in this record the feat of laying 79 eggs in 79 days. Either she did not know when Sunday came or she was naturally just so full of eggs that she had to work on the Sabbath the same as other days. She was hatched March 10, 1920, and

.due poultrymen for years. Because of this early hatching she matured before cold weather last fall and during October laid 12 eggs when "eggs were epgs." In November she laid 12 eggs nhen "eggs were eggs." In November she laid 11, in December 5, and in January she produced 26 eggs. In February, 22 eggs were marked to her credit and in March SO, missing only one day which was Saturday, March 12. She started March 13 and did not miss a day laying an egg until May SI. The excitement of the Speedway race evidently was too much for this chicken and she failed to lay an egg the last day of May. However, she started in again June 1 and did not miss a day up to June 14, laying 13 straight. She is still laying, though not so regularly. Shows Breeding Results. Lady Purdue is an excellent illustration of what good breeding, good feeding and good management will do. The blue blood of poultry aristocracy flows through her veins. Her sire, obtained from a western agricultural college, was from a hen who layed 214 eggs in a year and her dam was from

the famous Holler man and E. B. Thompson Barred Rock strains. Her mother has a record of 182 eggs a

year to her credit and her grandmother was even better with 220. Thus is may be seen that Lady Purdue is from a family of high producers. She has received the standard Purdue laying ration of 15 pounds of cracked corn, 5 pounds of wheat, 5 pounds of oats, and a dry mash mixture including five pounds of bran, five pounds of shorts and three pounds of tankage. The grain is always fed in a deep straw litter so that the hens get plenty of exercise scratching for it. "Her body measurements carry out the utility requirements for a good layer," said Prof. A. G. Philips in commenting on her record." She has an extended, slab-sided" body and carries out width of her back well toward the rear. She also shows an excellent abdominal development and has every

indication of being a high producer.

SENATORS AGREE ON BILL REGULATING GRAIN FUTURES WASHINGTON, July 1. Agreement was reached Thursday by the senate agriculture committee to report the House bill to regulate future trading cn grain exchanges. Further hearings will be held by the committee July 5, but members expect these to consume only a single day.

Wayne farmers who are enrolled are: B. W. Wissler, Gaar Eliason. J. F. Helms, H. F. Caldwell, Charles F. Williams, Wood Eliason, Theodore Davis, Andrew Kerber, William Wessel, Arvel Daily, V. S. Wilson, Albert Ferris and Elmer Miller. All but a few of these men are iq neighbor

hoods where chinch bug has been found, and fear is expressed that success with the five-acre work this year is seriously endangered, as corn is the crop which suffers worst from that insect.

DAUGHERTY'S BUREAU DROPS 115; PAY ROLL CUT $437,000 WASHINGTON, July 1 Attorney General Daugherty said today that the Department of Justice has today 43

special agents than it had on March 4, involving an annual saving of $437,000. Six of the attorneys dropped, he said, drew average salaries of $13,000 each. The highest salary paid to one man was $24,000.

DIES OF BROKEN NECK. TERRE HAUTE, Ind., July 1. David O'Dowd, who suffered a broken neck when he dived into shallow water in the Wabash river, Tuesday, died in a hospital here Thursday. He was 21 years old, and a member of a

pleasure party on a river boat. He was an expert swimmer and dived into what appeared to be deep water.

Sixty million barrels of oil were taken in ten years from the valley of Oil Creek, Pa., in the first great oil boom.
