COUNTY UNITS ERECT LEAFY MONUMENTS TO ST. JOSEPH VETS

South Bend, Ind., is making a leap forward in its tree planting campaign that gives it reason to boast. It has organized a St. Joseph County Memorial Tree association, which is cooperating with Richard Lieber, director of the state conservation commission; Charles C. Dean, the state

forester; A. H. Hinkle, the state's chief engineer of maintenance, state highways commission, and C. Lanhan, superintendent of trees, Washington, D. C. With the assistance of these experts, the association is purchasing 5,000 trees to plant over the 18 miles of Lincoln highway that extends through the county. The leafy monuments will be planted to the memory of Indiana soldiers, sailors, and Red Cross nurses of the World war. The drive for trees will begin in

July, and the positions of trees, the' kind, and other details will be decided upon. The trees, of uniform size, will

be insured. The county will be divided into townships, not cities, for the allotment of trees, each unit taking care of its number of soldiers. As an incentive, Mrs. Joseph E. Neff, president of the association, is advertising the memorial and asking for help by the following bulletin: -Pass the word along. Buy & tree. The American Legion is co-operating,

so are the Gold Star mothers. But

this is citizens' movement you and I

our neighbors. Each one and all of us." Those who are giving their time and effort to the tree movement in this

part of Indiana are Mrs. Joseph Neff, Edgar L. Kelsey, Mrs. John Reynolds Jr., Mrs. Frank Whitehall, and a committee of 16 other prominent men and women.
