William Burbanck, grade 2, of
Vaile scliool, received Buch an in teresting letter last week from his Riandfathcr, that he wanted to put one part of it in a little story for The Junior. It tells about the trip his grandfather made to a high hill from where he could see the 12 new long ocean piers that are being built In New York. The part of the letter that tells the story, follows: Sunday, 1 passed over Pavilion Hill. Wh-n 1 arrived on top, I turned round and what a firm Riftht It was a real panorama. Twelve lari'e pirrs, 150it,000, In various TttagPM of completion : the Iron work alt up, but on one pier, and painted led, and 70 steamers lylnK at anelior in the bay and the mm shining bright, the ferry boats plying between Manhattan and Staten Ixland It Is a fine sight." Such little glimpses of interesting things that are happening in the world, away from where we are living, are always welcomed as stories for The Junior Palladium.. GIRLHOOD STORIES OF FAMOUS WOMEN MRS. FRED WESTCOTT The sea was wild; waves tossed up over the deck, and the boat pitched from side to side. But the louder the waves roared and the shriller the wind shrieked, the better the little Danish baby liked it. This initiation into sea life when jhe was just two years old, played in important part in the future life i Mrs. Fred Westcott. Instead of staying honio while her husband made trips on his boat, nhe went along and studied the mechanism of the boat. Mrs. Westcott is the only woman who has a license as a marine engineer.
Boys and Girls Learn
MAXINE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL IN COOKING CLASS I learned to wash dishes in the correct order; things I should ami should not eat; how long I should sleep; to sleep with my windows open; how important it is that I obey the health rules; to always take level measure; to be cheerful , while eating; the right foods to eat; how to cook cereals, and a very good motto. Maxine Leach, grade 6A, Starr school. USED TO TAKE CATNIP TEA; NOW GLAD TO TAKE MILK 1 learned to cook at home, which helped mother. 1 learned to take care of my body. I now have good health. I learned how to keep myself in good health. I learned not to cool right off after I am very hot. I learned to eat better. I learned that if you laugh or talk while you are chewing that your food does not ' digest, and sometimes kills you. Mv cookiner teacher told me about a cat that some boys had, and they teased it. They got it real mad, and then they put something to eat in front of the cat. The food did not digest. Two weeks later they petted the cat and gave it something to eat and the food digested well. I learned that I should eat this every day: milk, cereals, fruit, vegetables, leafy and starchy, proteins, eggs, meat and fish. I also learned to cook things that are pood for us, and this is the best thing in the world and that is milk. When I was a baby, they did not feed me at regular times and I got awfully sick. My aunt took me and would feed me catnip tea and now that my teacher says I am ft healthy girl and that is because I learned the things to get mo In good health. (iraela Dickinson, grade 5A, Joseph Moore school. I know how to tend to the baby better now than I did. I am proud of what I have learned in this class. While my molher had bad health I did a great deal of work around the house. 4I' by The Philadelphia Inquirer Co. PARENTS HAVE STOPPED DRINKING COFFEE, ALSO I have learned in cooking lessons how to cook many things. And 1 have learned not to be noisy while eating or laugh too hard. I never drink coffee while I have my health card. It has reminded me of ten different things to be careful of concerning my health. I also learned to go to bed and sleep about eight hours, and sleep with my windows open. I sleep till about seven o'clock. I help mother with her cooking so that she can get more rest. I have got in the habit, of washing my hands before going to eat my meals, and my health card reminds me of our cooking class. Then I remember the rule for washing the dishes. F eat many cereals for breakfast, such as rolled oats and oat meal. I also eat many fruits for breakfast. I drink about two glasses or more of milk a day. I remember i rules for eating and never eat food from the sides of the spoon but from the tip. I told father about my card and told him not to drink coffee. I have got him to not drink it. any more. Molher is tryln 10 f,l0D drinking coffee, be cause of the health card with ten little rules. Martha Yedding, GA grade, Baxter school. NOTHING WORSE THAN HIVES I have learned since I took cooking lessons to do the dishes In the order that Miss Murphy taught us, and I have learned to cook baked custard, fudge, floating island, butterscotch, goldenrod eggs, anil a great many other things in both egg cookery and other things. Cooking helped me teaching me to cook and now I can help with the supper. I have also learned a great many things about health and I have been obeying about six of the health rules and in doing this I have not had any bad sick spells, worse than hives, all winter. I learned to come in at the right time to help with the meals and sometimes when I try, mother says my cooking is almost as good as hers. Mary Kemper, grade 6, llibberd school.

A tank which can make its way over both land and water has been invented by a Frenchman, and wa recently tested successfully in Marseilles, France. Five passen gers rode in the tank during tho test, ami enjoyed their ride, which took them over ground at a last speed, and down the bank into tho river, where it was maneuvered i like a -iu:ill power boat. ENJOYS DISHES THAT SHE WOULD NOT EAT BEFORE I have learned to have better manners since I had health lessons. I learned to make dishes of food that I didn't like before. But 1 like them now because I cooked them. learned to wash dishes more correctly. At first 1 washed all tho dishes and let the silverware be last; now, I wash the silverware before I wash the chinaware. In health I have learned more.
