lish a unit of its organization in Richmond for

the purpose of manufacturing products to supply

the trade west of Pittsburgh will bring another

substantial factory to Richmond. The company .will not only manufacture the products of the Richmond Safety Gate company,

but als.a articles made in the . home plant in Brooklyn, N. Y. The company is known all over the United States ami has a wide distribution for its products. The shipment of its products

from here will contribute to keep the name of

Richmond before the buying public.

A few business menand manufacturers succeeded in selling the city to the controlling stockholders of the company, who came here without the solicitation of an organization or a request for financial assistance. The capital involved in the Richmond unit is about $135,000. Operations will begin in about three months. ' The selection of this city as a location for a plant of this kind is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of a concern which exists only on paper and involves a stock promotion scheme, such as the Multi-X Airplane corporation, that succeeded in getting hundreds of dollars from the pockets of the people. : The Peelle company will be warmly welcomed to this city. The public hopes it will be able to expand quickly so that the Richmond unit will soon have the main office and plant cf the company.

but the actual attainment of the project need not be expected. ' When the question of the construction of the New Main street bridge across Whitewater was under discussion, the problem of changing the grade of the C. & O. tracks was thoroughly investigated. It developed that the raising of the viaduct would involve a change in the grade of the tracks as far north as the passenger station of the company. The cost of the improvement was then regarded as prohibitive. The original mistake was made when the present grade of the tracks was established, but that was at a time when the question "of an interurban line passing under the bridge was not raised.

Raising the C. & O. Bridge The raising of the C. & 0. viaduct at the foot of the Main street bridge is greatly to be desired,

Evansville Rejects the City Manager System Evansville joined the ranks of Indiana municipalities that have rejected the city manager

system. With the exception of Michigan City, every Hoosier city that has held a referendum election on the subject has decided to stay with the federal system. The results obtained at Michigan City will be watched closely all over the state. In none of the cities did the project. interest the voters very much. Between 50 and 60 per cent of the voters went to the polls. The others were apathetic and disinterested. It will be interesting to see what percentage of voters participate in the forthcoming election. The nominating elections will bring out a bigger vote, because the personality of the men in the race will impel voters to register their approval or disapproval of the candidates. If all the Republican candidates for the mayoralty "nomination who have announced themselves in Richmond stay in the race, the chances are that very few voters will neglect to go to the polls. The nominating primaries were designed to give the people a chance to select the men and women for the party tickets. The voter who

( stays at home on-primary election day ought not

to feel peeved if undesirable candidates are nominated. It is his duty to go to the polls to help make the decision.

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams. Author of "You Can", "Take It". "Up" WANTEDS25,000AYEAR MEN' In a crisis it's the half-way men that have to go. Those who have the courage and foresight and initiative to plough through things, stay when the big fight looms.. It is difficult for the ragged edgf-d sort of men to understand this truth. They think that they should be cared for in better style. But the masterful man in a tightv emergency doesn't think of himself but of the structure which he has helped to build. The $25,000-a-year-man and those bigger than this are always workers" in easy strain because they SEE big. And sight in business brings greater rewards than almost anything else. If you can see" big, you are bound to DO big. There are more worlds to conquer these days than at any other time in history. But you have to go after them! The content ed-with-his-job man gets in the way of big worlds when they come towards him and so is either crushed by them or else pushed down the sidings. But the creator and initiator gives a good jump and gets astern of the oncoming world and goes ahead with it! Business is dull but businesses are hunting high and low for $25.0O0-a-year men. ( Because these are the kind of men who dig the graves for dult times in business. Businesses founded on visions germinate in dull times. Earthquakes or floods or panics can't kill them. The president of the United States has just appointed an advertising man to head the shipping board of the country. I can remember when this man was only an extraordinary hustler in the business he now owns. President Harding said he wanted a man who could get things done. He said that he didn't hkve to be an expert man at building boats or ships to fill this task. The president showed great wisdom in this appointment. A. D. Lasker will make good. Big men are all the time coming to the top just like cream! Worth is a great commodity. It is the oxygen of high achievement. And if you would rise, you must breathe it at every breath.

The Home Gard

Keep garden crops free from weeds and well tilled these days. It's lots easier to kill the weeds when they are small. Late celery and cabbage may be set now. Plant plenty of each. Good home gardens are going to be valuable parts of the home this year.

Squash may still be planted with success. Use the small hubbard if the seed can be obtained.

. THE PROPHETS. The wise old prophets of the ring now figure in the daily news, and they explain, like everything, why Carp will win or why he'll lose. These seventh sons of seventh sons are always here to guide us right, whenever pugilistic fines are scheduled for a drastic fight. The mantle of Elijah falls upon the wise men of the ring, and every dead game sport recalls that prophet-eering has its sting. For if the prophets all uite to say that Jack will win the scrap, and Jack is beaten in the fight, how shall each prophet save his map? The prophets' told me. years ago, that Willard had a lead pipe cinch, and after seven rounds or so, poor Jack would be too dead to pinch. And so I wagered all my means, according to the prophets' rede, and when the winners got their beans my bank account was gone to seed. The prophets said, in days of old, that Corbett was the prince of blows, and he would knock Fitzslmmons cold, among Nevada's ghastly snows. And so, to bet on Jim's success, I put my watch and cow in soak; conceive my subsequent distress I never was so badly broke. I shall not bet on Jack or Carp, on matter what the prophets say; while they predict I'll tune my harp, and spring a mad and merry r' Silk of the threads of brocade are dyed green belore they are woven.

SECRETARY WALLACE TO SPEAK AT LAFAYETTE LAFAYETTE, Ind., June 20. Henry C. Wallace, secretary of agriculture, will be the principal speaker at "Faymen's day" at Battle Ground, Aug. 4, it was announced today. Governor Warren T. McCray, G. I. Christie, director of the Purdue experiment station; John G. Brown, president of the Farmers' Federation, and other prominent men in the state will be on the program.

NIn many of the rural districts of the United States where money does not circulate with great rapidity, services are paid for "in kind." Farmers for example, will give potatoes, eggs, etc., in payment for debts. A young surgeon, who had occasion to operate in one of these district, hopefully approached the husband of the patient and asked for his fee, which amounted to $100. "Doc," said the old man, "I haven't much ready cash on hand. Suppose you let me pay you in kind." "Well, I guess that will be all right," replied the young doctor, cheerfully "What do you deal in?" , . "Horseradish, doc," answered the old man.

Answers to Questions I

, j INTERESTED READER Years ago a noted railroad capitalist, C. P. Huntington, said that if he were a young man, out to make his fortune, he would produce rubber. Where do the trees grow that rubber comes from? Most of the rubber produced comes from the valley of the Amazon; the central part of Africa and the East Indies. A small quantity is obtained from Mexico and from the southwestern portion of the United States. Rubber from the United States is produced in paying quantities from numerous plants. The rubber obtained from the heva tree is of the highest quality known. It is known as Para rubber, because it is shipped from Para, Brazil. The Congo- region of Africa abounds in rubber producing plants. Guayule, a shrub growing 3 to 5 feet in height, is becoming an important source of rubber. This plant is found in Mexico and in southwestern Texas. Housewife How do you set colors in wash goods?
