ROAD FROM RICHMOND TO tERRE HAUTE TO .GET. INTENSIVE WORK INDIANAPOLIS. Ind., June 17. minois will complete the National road through that state this summer and Indiana -will coupie up previously constructed sections in the Hoosier link between Terre Haute and Richmond, leaving 66 milss of this, road in Indiana which will not be contracted for this year, according to announcement today by Lawrence Lyons, director of the state highway department. While the policy of the commission is to go slow on building new roads until production costs decline .to a
reasonable figure, it recognizes the vital importance of expediting this work and the imperative need of bridging gaps, in order to bring into utility previous completed secons and to eliminate long and frequent detours. The-; fore much of this season's work, augmented by maintenance of other state roads, will be concentrated on the national road, Mr. Lyons says. Speeding Up Work. According to C. Gray, acting chief engineer, the construction of this most important of federal highways w'Jich is to give the nation a hard-surface road from coast to coast, is proceeding at the rate of approximately 4
miles a month. An additional con-1
crete mixer starts this month to speed up the work. Indiana today has completed 20.24 , miles of, this highway and has "16.2 miles under contract. A total of 102.5 miles is necessary to complete the road from Terre Haute to Richmond. The department has under . contract 151 miles of various state roads and up to this time has built with federal aid 56.5 miles. Building on all state highways is progressing at the unprecedented rate of approximately 20 miles a month against last year's record month of 7 miles an . average of 3 miles per month. Federal Aid Plan. The federal aid plan of co-operation with states in national highway construction is to match dollar for dol
lar, extending 50 on area up to but t
not in excess of $2000 a mile on contract price. With present inater- , ial and labor prices making it cost about J40.000 a mile for concrete roads, the government is supplying $20,000 of production cost in Indiana. Our state's portion of- government monies is $7,415,292.61 and, according to Engineer Gray, the highway department has contracted to use the sum .of $3,956,464 and ha? approved roads to cover all available funds, Federal , money, obtained on mileage built up , to May 24 this year was $175,343.22 and application has been made for $312,424.73. The Indiana portion of the National road connects the cities o Terre Haute, Brazil, Plainfield, Indianapolis, Greenfield. Knightstown, Cambridge City and Richmond, and opens to continuous modern highway travel some of the richest agricultural -and industrial gions of the Hoosier commonwealth.

Rep. James A. G alia vanRepresentative James A. Gallavan of Boston created a furore in the house recently when he introduced a joint resolution providing that the coming Dempsey-Carpen-tier battle be prohibited until after the U. S. has provided a suitable home for its war veterans. Gallavan argues that the people should not be allowed to pay $50 for a ticket' 'm the ght until they had contributed to a home for their country's heroes.
