HOLLAND FURNACE COMPANY BRANCHES ARE PERMANENT During the war, a very few of the smaller Holland Branches were temporarily closed because of the absence of some of our Experts. But except for the time of our National Emergency, all Branches have operated continuously. The local Holland Branch is In no way separate from the Holland Organization of Heating Experts, and is perm nent in every respect Holland Furnace Men in this city are your citizens. They are just as much of Richmond as any other men. If, at any time the subject cf permanency is to be debated, let it be understood that Holland Men are placed where they can give Heating Service most advantageously. And Holland Service Is Standard. If, for any reason it becomes necessary for one Holland Man to take up the duties of another, you'll appreciate that such a change does not injure the service that you depend upon. Necessarily ordinary dealers must go out of business every now and then, and the policy of the old dealer is wiped out by the new. For you, this is a vital way in which the Holland Man differs from the dealer. Holland policies are alike in over 220 Branches, both larger and smaller than the Richmond Branch, and they are permanent to the fullest extent. - . , HOLLAND FURNACE COMPANY Largest Installers of Furnaces In the World. Chapter 6. Along through 1915 and 1916 Jack Dempsey had "plenty of managers." He admits it himself. He had a new manager for almost every other fight. That was because the manager getting 25 per cent of Dempsey's winnings in those days didn't figure it worth while to make matches for 12.50 to $5.00. "Along in the early part of 1916 1 bumped into Jack Price, a boyhood pal of mine, on one of the streets in Salt Lake," recounted the champion. "I hadn't seen Jack for quite a time and he had heard something about my successes against the dubs fighting around Utah. " 'You're just the bird I want to see just the bird,' exclaimed my old buddy. '"Why all the gladness?" I asked. " 'I hear that you haven's got a manager now. Is that right?' CITY ADVERTISEMENT Department of Public Works, office of the Board, Richmond, Ind., June 10. 1921. I had that all figured out the other night when I saw you fight one of those tough babies for 120 That's no money no money j at all. Why, my boy, with me as your manager we could get $100 for every fight maybe $125. "I was somewhat skeptical about the figures; $100 for an evening's work seemed like press agent stuff. If Jack had said $50, I wouldn't have offered much of an argument "but $100 or may-j be $125, well 'sounds good, but are you sure we can get that much?' I questioned. " 'Dead sure, dead sure,' enthustiastically replied Jack. 'Of course, I cannot get it here for you not in these diggings. In the east that's where we'll get it. They pay fighters plenty of jack in the east. I have been reading the papers that come from there, my boy, and some of them tell about fighters that aren t any better tnan you who get $300 and $500. Gets Enthusiastic. " 'Where is that," I asked, becoming suddenly enthusiastic, but at the same time becoming more skeptical as Jack whooped up the prospective purse price to $300 and $500. 'Where Jo they pay that money?' " 'In the East in Denver and Kansas Citv' was the answer. "Jack's idea was the same as minethat Denver was 'far East' and that Kansas City was infinitely father away. Yes, we had heard of such towns as New York, Boston, Philadel phia ar.d Cleveland but we had also heard about Heaven and the distance of the moon from the sun. They like New rork, seemed too far away for consideration. "'How do we get such purses?' I asked Jack. " Why, we go right to these towns, hunt up a promoter, sign some papers. I get the money, you fight and we split, it up afterward. That's all fair, isn't it?' When Do We Eat? " 'Sure, sure,' I said. 'But how do we go East?' " 'On a train, my boy,' was Jack's comeback. Then as an afterthought 'On a passenger train.' "Passenger trains means money and my total wealth was $S.74. I spoke about that to Jack. " 'Don't let a little thing like that worry you. As your manager I advance travelling expenses to be deI ducted from the first purse we get. But don't get reckless with that $ S.74. Hang on to it and bring it along. You duck home, pack your duds and meet me at the station tomorrow morning at 10:30 and we'll be on your way East,' " (Chapter 7 of "The Romance of Jack Dempsey's Career" appears Mondav, June 13, 1921.) The session lasted S3 minutes and Carpentier did not appear to take the work seriously. Part of the time his attention was centered on the comment, and movements of the spectators. Jaw Sags. At the finish of his exhibition those who followed Carpentier from the ring. (noted that his jaw was sagging loosely. and he wore a tired, haggard expres sion in marked contrast to the jaunty air he showed at the beginning of the afternoon's workout. Among those who watched the workout was Boyd Comstock. former trainer of the University of Southern California track teams. Asked regarding his opinion of the exhibition he said : ' ... . "In many Respects Carpentier Is a most remarkable athlete but I should" say right now he is mentally stale if not physically so. I am not in a position to judge his boxing ability as he' cm nottnng unusual in the ring, but -studied as an athletic specimen, he is most interesting. To begin with he has a really woriderf ul muscular development from his toes to his knees, and should be able to move around the ring like a shadow. From knees to hips his development is nothing abnormal from an athletic standpoint ; Looks Like Acrobat. 'Considered as a whole I would sav that Carpeniier's bodily developments leaned toward that of a track athlete or an acrobat, rather than a heavyweight pugilist. "I was more interested, however, in his apparent lassitude and indifference throughout the work. This impression was heightened by the generally sober ana somDre atmosphere which pervaded the spectators and camp . retinue. Everybody spoke in a whisper and it appeared to have the' general aspect of a funeral. If I were handling Carpentier, I would import a court jester and a couple of negro minitreis to liven up the Frenchman. It would be a pity to see him mentally fagged out as Jim Jeffries was on the eve of just. such an important contest." - JACK'S GOOD LUCK TOKENS WEIGH TON (By 'Associated Press) ATLANTIC CITY, N. So he sent Dempsey a .; sprig of shamrocks, suggesting that he conceal them in his corner for good luck. Dempsey also received a silk belt, made of small American flags, which Jacob Schoffman, of New York, sent the champion, with the request that it be worn in the arena. Since stories were published of the injury to one of Dempsey's police dogs, the champion has received hundreds of letters containing offers to send another pet. The dog was hurt when an automobile ran over it while Dempsey was out for his morning run on the road. The dog, however, has completely recovered and is enjoying the morning runs with the champion.
