COCKROACH RACING IS POPULAR SPORT

IN CONSTANTINOPLE

By Associated Prsts.) CONSTANTINOPLE, June 7. Bettine on cockroach races is one of the newest sports here. It was introduced by a Russian who has just opened a hall where a man who wants some real excitement for his money, can get results. The hall is darkened at the moment the race is to begin. Then a single electric light at the end of a runway is turned on, and the cockroaches, each in a separate track, are let loose from their cages to race for the light. More real, old-fashioned, non-pro-fessional sport may be had here than in any other city of Europe. This is due in part to the Allied troops of oc cupation, to the American officers and sailors on station here and the large number of American and British civilians who have come out for business since the armistice. Allies Active In Sprots. "What the Russian refugees hare done in the way of enlivening the city with concerts, dancing places and oueer restaurants, the Allies have done in sporting lines. In winter there is wild boar, duck and fox hunting. There is also, in and out of season, plenty of horseback riding over the dirt roads and unfenced stretches of upland country on both sides of the Bosphorus. Horse races are often held. Both the British and the American have laid out golf courses. There are also a few tennis courts. The troops and sailors within the city have taken charge of a large field near Taxim, in the center of Pera, and there play football and baseball matches. Yachting and swimming are "commonplace sports open to all.

WASHINGTON. Did you ever see any of Leyendecker's front covers on the page of national magazines or his famous collar ads? Then you are probably acquainted with the features of the good-looking William Lawrence, who is one of Bebe Daniels' four leading men in "Ducks and Drakes" the uproarious farce which is now at the Washington. Mr. Lawrence, before entering piclures, was a very successful artist's model. During the war he was a sergeant in the Tank Corps. MURRAY. There are few boys who have not dreamed of being king of a cannibal island, with dusky slaves to answer their commands and untold wealth at iheir disposal. And there are few who reach that age of adventurous dreams who have not also found themselves at times thinking of some pretty girl playmate, who would make a fine white queen for the cannibal kingdom. Mary Roberts Rinheart has woven all the ambitions and love of youth into her story "It's a Great Life." a Goldwyn-Eminent Authors Production, now showing at the Murray theatre. MURRETTE. This quaint and charming: little cap, which fits closely to the head, it designed for wear to the formal summer dances. It is fashioned ox net with many loops of picoted edged ribbon completely hiding the net. Streamers of the ribbon fall coyly at one side. Such a little cap or bonnet is strangely suggestive of olden days and is quite in keeping with the new dancing frocks with their tight little bodices and full skirts. The nice thing about it is that either the girl with bobbed hair er the girl who knots her hair on the back of her head can wear these little caps. They are becoming and they keep one's hair in place, which is a hard thing to do on warm summer's night when dancing on a ntel veranda or perhaos on a yacht.

sonnel in "A Passing Reveu of Songs and Dancers."

The act earns its right to headline

the bill not only through skill and

elaborateness, but also through the "peppy" effort displayed. Often a team of dancers prove intolerable. Not so with this couple. Of great worth to

the offering is the piano and vocal numbers contributed by the third mem-

ber of the trio. His "Jimmy Lend Me Your Saw," is beyond criticism. King and Wyse have a most clever

act. Both the young lady and young

man are splendid examples of good vaudeville talent. They have also a vaudeville vehicle of merit. Ryan and Brunson entertain with numerous vocal selections. One of the team accompanies the numbers with piano melody. , Their offering is clean cut, musically and comically. A matrimonial agency love affair is depicted in "Not That Sort Of A Widow," by Howard and Aitken. Both behave themselves in a convulsively comic manner, as becoming a pair brought together by a "Cupid" institution. A song or two completes their stand. "It's A Great Life." a five-reel feature film by Mary Roberts Rinehart, concludes the bill. Marvin.

MOVIES WILL SHOW FISH CULTURAL WORK (By Associated Press) INDIANAPOLIS, June 7. Motion pictures of fish cultural work conducted by the state department of conservation at the four state hatcheries for the purpose of stocking Hoosier waters, together with scenes of potential fish streams and lakes are being made for educational purposes, George N. Mannfeld, or the department, said in a statement issued today. Representatives of the department will exhibit the pictures when addressing the various 11 protective clubs of the state, and on public speaking tours. The four hatcheries for propagating game fishes, principally the black bass, pike perch, crappie, yellow perch and blua gills, are at Lake Wawasee in Korciusko county, Bass Lake in Starke county, Tri-lakes in Whitley county, and Riverside park, Indianapolis. Mr. Mannfeld says statewide interest is manifest to make the streams and lakes of Indiana replete with aquatic life, both from the value of food as well as to provide recreation. There are 200 large lakes in the state. 18 of which exceed 500 acres in area. The movies . will show the parent bass on the nests guarding the spawn and the development of the fish until they are planted in public waters to provide later sport for the angler.
