TEACHING EFFICIENCY A NEEDED IN CHURCH, SAYS OHIO SPEAKER Present day Sunday school teaching is Inadequate in quality, quantity and efficiency, according to Prof. C. B. Gohdes. D. Lit. Capital university, Colurabus. O., who addressed the Dayton conference at the Joint Lutheran Synod Sunday school convention, in the Trinity Lutheran church, this city. His address was the last of those to be given during the two days convention. "The reason why Sunday school teachers should be more efficient," iid Prof. Gohdes, "is because of the deplorable outlook of the Sundayschool at present. Of 53,000,000 children in America in 1916, there were 22.000,000 enrolled in Protestant Sunday schools. Since 1916 a slump of nearly 7,000,000 has taken place. Out of every seven children of Protestant faith in America, only two attend Sunday school. Compares with Others. - "In schools in Jewish Rvnnrftpiies

over 300 hours instruction is given children each year; children of the Roman Catholic faith receive over 200 hours each year. The average Protestant child gets but 24 hours instruction per year. "In view of the utter inadequacy of

training in the Sunday-schools great-! er efficiency of teaching -is needed. The main element of lesson preparation is communion with God through prayer. The second element is technical. For the purpose of making that more efficient, we command the observance of the so-called formal steps of Herbart's psychology, namely, the announcement of aim of lessons at the outset, preparation, - penetration with contrast and comparison, generalization and application, whereby instruction becomes characterized by force and exactness. "In order to lift the Sunday school world to a higher plane of efficiency, it. is recommended that a course be instituted in church colleges where Sunday school workers can be equip

ped for their task. Likewise, that the city and state authorities set apart one-half day each week for the purpose of turning public school pupils over to church authorities for instruction in God's word. Would Employ .PastoVs "Inasmuch as these religious branches are quite as much an educational factor as the usual public school curriculum, we believe such an arrangement would prove, of great benefit. Finally, in view of the utter inadequacy of Sunday school instruction, it is recommended that pastors devote a certain time during the summer and on Saturdays to religious instruction." The part to -be played by Sunday schools in providing workers and funds for the carrying on of missionary activities ii India was the theme

Ernst, New 7: 00 to 9 : 30. morning ses second and

discussed by George Lebanon, Ohio, In the

sion. i "Our . missionaries have charge of 10 main and S8 out stations," said Mr. Ernst, in telling of the range of work promoted in the India field. "Last year 130,000 was voted an annual appropriation for India field work, by the Joint Synod, at Blue Island, 111. This sum will help provide the means of carrying on the work. "Twenty-five dollars a year will be sufficient ' for the sending of one student in India to high school or a secondary school. One student can be sent to college for ?150 yearly. This is the way we can help teach those people to help themselves."

Mr. Ernst urged the training or children for missionaries when they show any inclination. Because, of the time it takes tc prepare persons to be efficient missionaries, the children should be encouraged, he said.
