SEN. WATSON STARTS 'TRUTH IN FABRIC BILL HEARING WEDNESDAY WASHINGTON, June 1. Senator "Watson, of Indiana, as chairman of a sub-committee of the senate interstate commerce committee. Wednesday was to start a hearing on the "truth in fabric" bill sponsored by Senator Capper of Kansas and Representative French of Idaho. It is a bill requiring the marking of cloth so that purchasers may know whether it has been made f:4Ti virgin wool or shoddy. The measure has the backing of a large number of farm organizations and wool growers and has drawn the fire of woolen manufacturers. Several farm bureaus of Indiana have sown an interest in the measure. The Black, ford county farm bureau and other similar organizations of Indiana have written letters here, urging favorable consideration of the bill. Another indorser is the National Association of Dyers and Cleaners, of which J. F. Ermisch, of Terre Haute, is treasurer. Senator Capper and Alexander W. Walker, of the National Wool and Sheep Growers' bureau, will be the first witnesses before the committee. Works Injustice. "The people are entitled to know what they buy, and this measure simply requires an honest marking of the goods,"- said Senator Capper. "A wrong Is imposed upon the people by the substitution of shoddy for virgin wool, under the misunderstood term of 'all wool' or 'pure wool' which the people understand to mean virgin or unused wool, but which oftentimes includes all grades of shoddy. This counterfeiting of virgin wool also results in injustice to the wool grower and will, if continued, eventually destroy sheep husbandry, an essential industry. The marking of the cloth simply would give the people knowledge of what they are buying. We have a pure food law, and experience is teaching us that the need for a pure
fabric law is almost as great, if wo are td stop deception. "Even if shoddy were as good as virgin wool, that could in no sense justify shoddy counterfeiting virgin wool. Brass may be and is for some purposes better than gold, but this fact can not in any sense justify counterfeiting of gold by brass." Senator Watson is having a workout these days. He is a member of both the finance and interstate commerce committees which are conducting hearings of taxation, railroads and other subjects, including the fabric measure.

American Legion
v n Citizens of the state of Indiana are invited to attend the annual state and civic Fourth of July celebration which
j will be held this year at the state fair (grounds under the auspices of the I Marion County Council of The American Legion. Through an arrangement ' made between the Legion and the
state board of agriculture plans have been formulated for the unrestricted use of the grounds during the celebration and, with the general support of more than a score of civic and patriotic organizations throughout the state, indications point to one of the most successful events held in years. It has been announced by the athletic committee appointed by the Legion, which is co-operating with officials of the Amateur Athletic Union that an all-day athletic program and carnival will head the events thus far planned, following a gigantic parade of all the former service men in Indianapolis and the state who desire to participate. Entries have been received from a number of amateur athletes from various parts of the country who are arranging to compete in the Marathon race from Noblesville to Indianapolis, ending directly in front of the grand stand at the state fair'grounds. Other events scheduled include the usual track events such as foot races, dashes, pole vault, hurdle
! races, a relay, broad and high jumping,
and the weight events. Throughout the afternoon concessions and free amusements will fill the program. Under the auspices of the Women's Auxiliary to the Legion a dance will be given in the Art building at the state fair grounds and the services of several nationally known bands have been obtained to play alternately at the dances. Tentative promises from a number of noted speakers to attend the celebration have been received. A display of fireworks which, it is said, will be one of the most expensive ever given, will conclude the program.
