VOLUNTEER LABORERS OF BOONVILLE FORM ROAD BUIL0:3 CLUB
rByVAoclatd Press ;:"-V DOONV11XB, Ind., May 27:--la-dlana's first permanent Tolunteer mad
building chili' is claimed by BoonTllle, and its first accomplishment wu the building la one day of two bridge. The bridge work . was'; . .community affair, business men 'Joining with laborers x and ' farmers in doing the work.: Since last fall, the rich farming district 'west of the city has been almost Isolated from the city, due to the tearing down of the two bridges on the state highway. Both city and county officials held that they could not appropriate money to bear the expense of repair, because the road was under state control, so a volunteer committee headedby Mayor S. A. Jarrett canvassed the business men for subscrip
tions to buy the materials for new bridges. The money was raised in a day, and then the day for work was set handbills being distributed calling on everyone to be present to help. Many Answer CallOne hundred workers, including many from the coal mines, which closed for the day, were ready for work at 7 o'clock, and the number multiplied during the day. The first bridge, 40 feet long and 20 feet wide waa;.ready for traffic in two hours. Among the workers was State Representative John Schurmier, and State Senator Roscoe Kiper, the latter spending the day in dumping and loading "dirt" scrappers. Similar jobs were done by city business men, and the community workfest was. completed late in the day when the second bridge was completed and the road was open for the first time since fall. As a result of the. success of the co-operative day, plans are being made for the permanent road club, and it
already is functioning with a few members. A washed out bridge on te .
state highway northwest of the city was holding up traffic on the road a few days after the community work day. .A crew of club members was soon organized and repaired the bridge.
