SHOT GUNS PREFERRED BY CHICAGO POLICE -FOR STREET BATTLES (By .Aaoociated Pre CHICAGO, May 26. Substitution of the shotgun for the rifle is the latest development In man-hunting by the Chicago police. The time-honored rifle squad has given way to the pumpgun squad. .',. ; . The reason for the change was thus outlined by Michael Hughes, chief of detectives: ' .-. . "In close-range fighting the pumpgun is much the more efficient weapon, for within 90 feet of the objective it has a spread of four feet. Each shot carries nine rounds of lead, corresponding in size to that in a 38 revolver bullet." "In street fighting, also, the chances of hitting the innocent bystander are greatly minimized by the use of the shot-gun, because the , effective range is so short.", Shoot Into Rear of Car. "The other day we discovered a new use for the shot gun. During a race after bandits in an automobile, one of our men emptied his gun through the rear curtain of the speeding machine ahead. The hail of bullets stopped that car as no rifle shot would ever have done." "The gun we us has the shortest - stock. Every one of the detective cars carries these guns as regular equipment." Another innovation In the detective bureau's equipment is a steel shield, as high as a man's head, from behind which the operatives can direct, in comparative safety, their fire at bandits barricaded in a building. This portable armor is mounted on rollers, and is light enough, so that one man can operate it. Port holes, through which to fire, and a heavy glass peep hole are appurtenances. Bombing, which is now a recognized part in police tactics in Chicago, can be carried on with great impunity from the shelter of this shield, said Chief Hughes. G, OF G. BOARD FAVORS ! ERECTION OF Y. W. G. A. ' Endorsement of the aim of the women's division of the Chamber of Commerce to build a Y. W. C. A. in Richmond, was given by the directors of the Chamber of Commerce at a .rateting held afc 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. A. W. Roach, head of the women's division, said Thursday 'that the next step to be taken by the women in the enterprise was to secure other endorsements from Richmond organizations. ; "Tentative plans for the project will be made during the summer,' said Mrs. Roach, "and in the early fall the national board of the Y. W. C. A. will send some one here to assist in the movement. The national ' board is continually busy building association houses, and the person they send here will be well acquainted with the kind of structure this size city needs. "We have already been assured by a number of local citizens that they are willing to give toward a Y. W. C. A. fund. One business man expressed his opinion that the city of Richmond owes it to her girls and women to establish a Y. W. C. A. here. That seems to be the general feeling." Suburban i CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind.
