Inning the Eagles and Anderson Independents battled for nine innings at Exhibition park Sunday m high class fashion before the last visiting playei was retired and the Eagles chalked up their fifth straight victory S to 2. Sensational pitching by Hawekotte in the pinches enabled the locals to

Had Large Contract By and large the Eagles had about all they could handle wi)th the Anderson club and more than one local rooter heaved a sigh when Hawekotte put three straight strikes over the plate in the ninth inning which retired Nash for the-third out and ended the game. Pete Minner, as usual, wielded a wicked club and was instrumental in the runs scored by the Birds. Pete came to bat the first man in the fourth inning and connected with the second ball pitched for a triple, the ball bouncing bad for the left fielder and going nearly to the fence. Bryket flied out to Van Meter, but Reddinghaus placed a nice bunt down the third base line for the squeeze play i- ? - i a J ne.K tVirniu

bad to Cummins but had the base if the throw had not gone bad. The Eagles came back again in the fifth and put across two other marksrs. Hawekotte fanned, making the tirst out, and Herb Login was retired on. an infield play, Nash to Johnson. Cy Fitzgibbons started the rally by getting a hit between third and short and immediately stole second and third, Minner then drove a hit to right field which scored Fitzgibbons. Bryket then got hold of one or Nash's offerings for a two-bagger, which scored Minner. Bryket overslid second and was tagged for the third out. Anderson Hits in Sixth Anderson centered their hits in the sixth. Van Meter crossing the plate after two hits in the sixth and Boyle being tallied after getting a hit himself, followed by hits by Nash and Ehle. The visitors had men on third base in both the first and second innings but failed to score them. Farmland will play the Eagles next Sunday and Cambridge City will tackle the local on Monday, Decoration Day. These two games are looked on as the hardest the local have bucked up against, as the visiting teams will probably come loaded to take the long end of the scores back with them.

EARLHAM TRACK TEAM WINS FIRST HONORS AT BUTLER SATURDAY

- By scoring a total of 74Vi points, the Quaker track team duplicated its victory of last year, winning the nineteenth anual I. C. A. L. track and field meet at Butler College, Saturday. Franklin finished second with 42 Vi points whjle Butler with 30 points was third. Of the visiting schools N. A. G. U. proved best with 12 points and Oakland City second best with 3 points. In the scramble for points four' I. C. A. L.' records were broken and one tied. The outstanding feature of the meet was the all-around ability of the Earlham . team. Earlbam grabbed ten of the fifteen firsts, four seconds, four thirds and tieing for another, and fiv fourths. In all but the two miles In which Dalton was first to quit, the Maroon tracksters, accounted for third or better. Ivey is Meet Star. Captain Ivey was easily the star of

the meet. He won both hurdle races, the broad jump and Jumped second in the high jump. Ivey's time in the high hurdles 15 3-5 booked the I. C. A. L. record but in knocking down one hurdle Ivey will not be given .credit for

the new mark. His jump of 22 feet, Mi Inch in the broad jump was the best made 1n any of the Earlbam meets this year. Strohl, of Franklin, Siebert of N. A G. U., and Johnson of Earlham each scored 10 points. Strohl won both dashes, tying the I. C. A. L. record of 10 seconds for the hundred. Siebert broke Ivey's I. C. A. L. record in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, V2

i inches, and finishes second and third

in the high hurdles and broad jump. The much heralded Doolitte of But

ler was forced to give way to Earlham's star dlstancer, Dalton, after a thrilling neck and neck race to the tape in the mile. run. In doing the mile in 4:35 4-5 Dalton clipped one second off the former record by Meyers of DePauw. Pole Record Falls. The pole vault record fel? by the wayside when Graffis cleared the bar at 11 feet, 5 1-4 inches. "Chick- tried for a higher height but was forced out after be hurt his arm. This mark is 1 1-4 inches better than the former I. C. A. L. record. Earlham topped off her showing in winning the last event of the day the mile relay. "Pat" Page had evidently set his heart on this event as he eave medals for first only.. A new Earlham quartet made of Pha Jones, Robertson. Carter and Robinson spoiled "Pat's" plans by taking the

Butler Bull Dogs into camp after f most hair-raising 3 minutes and 35 seconds. This time is 6 seconds better than the relay has done-thi year. Other Earlham scores were: Hinshaw firet in the javelin: Emslie third fn the 100 and fourth in the 220 yards; Fauquher second in the 220: Beasley second In the shot; Carey third and

Dale fourth in the discus; Robinson second and Carter fourth In the 440; Wildman third in the high hurdles, tied for third in the pole vault nnd fourth in the hieh ump: and Pha Jones fourth in the 880 yards. The team was materially helped toward victory by the cheering of a bir Earlham gathering which made itself known from the time Ivey won the first heat, in the high hurdles until Charles Robinson crossed the line in the relay.

H. Johnson, third packer for AnderFon. wf cheered hv the f?ns when he knocked down J. Loewi's drive that looked good for a hit in the sixth inning, and retired him at first. The local fans are .sure good baseball sports.
