WAYNE CORN GROWERS ARE SEEKING PRIZES About 15 Wayne county corn growers have so far shown an intention to enter the five acre corn contest this year, says the county agent. There were two bronze medal winners in Wayne last year, and it is said that there could be several if farmers who have demonstrated to their own neighbors their ability as corn growers, should enter the state contest. 'To qualify for the bronze medal, it is'necessary. to have -a yield of 75 bushels an acre, while' a silver medal is given for yields of 85 to 100 bushels and a gold medal for yields over 109 bushels. Last year's medal winners in Wayne were Albert Ferris and Joseph Helms, with almost exactly the same yields, varying by only a tenth of a bushel, both being a little over 77 bushels.

Farmers who are wondering why the price of corn so persistently lagged under recent low figures all of last week, in the face of a broad wheac market with an upward sweep of 22 cents on May and of 13 cents on the July option, should remember that a lot of corn remains to be planted. You can't kill a crop until it is planted and in the case of corn until it has been replanted, much of this being done every year. But so far as winter wheat is concerned it is at a stage where much may happen to it. The recent advanc
es indicate two things.
that there were too many bears
when May wheat was 40 cents lower and July wheat selling pretty close to the dolar mark; the second is that the growing wheat must have deteriorated. Both of these propositions are true. A Few Comparisons Going- back to the week ending April 23, we find that May wheat made a low in that week of llO1: on Sat-
recall ..when - eggs, - butter and butter fat were appreciably cheaper than today. Crop Killers, at Work. Tliis does not mean that a farmer should, therefore, give his wheat away, nor is he at present prices! What we wish to emphasize is: That it will be much better for ail of us if we can raise a large crop of wheat at a fair price than to harvest a short crop on which a comparatively few . farmers
will get a big price and the speculator
and exporter reap millions of dollars. That is our argument, gentlemen.
Moreover, we are coming into the new t
rne first is crop year with slender reserves of
wheat, not merely in this country but throughout the world. This should preclude "cheap wheat" for. another 12 months. Crop reporters have been sending in doleful reports from the southwest for several days. Weather has been unfavorable. For the most part a lot of rain is needed. In some spots they have had too much rain. The Kansas state report admits a loss of about 10

about 2 cents lower than quoted four weeks earlier, when all wheat options were on the toboggan. Crop Damage Reports A further advance of wheat will not be of benefit to the country as a whole. It will mean a still further reduction in crop estimates. What is needed is plenty of grain for export and for our own bread, at a fair price. The broad-minded farmer will agree on this. Cash wheat and flour are high enough right now; No. 2 red bringing $1.60 at Chipago and $1.71 on track at Cincinnati, with No. 2 hard northern spring bringing up to $1.70 at Chicago and $1.90 at Winnipeg, its greatest home market. We submit that, in view of the declines in food
spot on Chicago cattle was $9.65. which was 10 cents below the top for the week ending May 14.

The report is asserted to show that handling charges are now cut to less than half the former charges under the old system of dealing with local stock buyers. Assuming that a hog weighs 200 pounds, it is declared that in most cases, the animal is disposed of by the shipper at a saving of $1.00.

(By Associated Press) COLUMBUS, O.. May 23. Marketing of live stock through the countrywide live stock shipping associations is highly profitable to the shippers, without increasing prices to the consumers, according to reports of April business of a number of associations, made to F. G. Ketner, live stock and grain marketing director of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. Up to date, Mr. Ketner has organized 27 counties. They are: Fulton, Wood, Henry. Hancock, Seneca, Sandusky, Erie. Huron, Van Wert, Allen,
Auglaize, Shelby, Champaign, Delaware, Morrow, Madison, Greene, Clinton, Fayette, Ross, Scioto, Coshocton, Muskingum, Perry, Morgan, Athens, and Darke. Many Being Organized. Organization partially is completed in the following counties: Mercer, Paulding, Hardin, Wyandot, Marion, Ottawa, Knox, Licking, Fairfield, Hocking, Pike, Jackson, Meigs, Tuscarawas,
Ashtabula, and Belmont. In the counties reporting, it is shown that shipments of hogs, cattle, calves, and sheep were handled at an average total expense of 73 cents a hundredweight. It is explained that the cost covers freight, the manager's commission charges, all other expenses and a sinking fund which pays losses due to dead or crippled animals and provides ordinary expenses not otherwise covered. The lowest, expense was that incurred in Fulton county, which was 52 cents a hundred-weight. The highest charge in any county association was 89 cents, in Muskingum. Cuts Handling Charge. It is pointed out that difference in average expense in due largely to the difference in freight rates, this, in turn being "due to distance from markets. Further, the counties longest in the shipping business are able to cut ex-
